Is Andy Lopez partially responsible for his own death?

Asked by: Juris_Naturalis
  • The boys parents should of never of had there son useing guns and why would you be walking with them out in the streets ??!

This kid isn't a angle he got expelled from a very ghetto jr high why does he have guns like this why is the orange tip removed? Who walks the streets with real looking fake guns and when the police tell you to drop your gun you drop it! He never should of had those guns on the streets. Period !

  • Toy Guns, Deadly Consequences

Those airsoft guns are very accurate replicas of real weapons. He also took off the orange tip that is required by law to show that these are toy guns. This kid's own actions brought on his death. His parents should be held liable for not educating him better. Why are people not attacking the parents for that?

  • He's fully responsible!

He should have never been walking down the street with that gun, and most importantly should have never muzzle flashed a cop. If he had not been holding it with his hand on the trigger , the situation would have turned out much differently!! Cops have a tough job and have a split second to react in situations like that . If the situation were reversed and that was a real gun and the cops did nothing, they would still be taking the heat because of it , so it's a lose lose situation for them . It has NOTHING to do with race , so all these protesters calling it a racist act is just plain rediculious , would have happened that way regardless of race!

  • Yes he was.

Carrying a replica AK47 assault rifle down a street, ever after being warned by people in the area to put it down, was not a good decision. Turning toward a law enforcement officer with the weapon was another bad decision. We expect our law enforcement officers to protect citizens and themselves from armed individuals. This appeared to be one of them.

  • Take responsibility for your actions.

Removing the orange plugs off the ends of two airsoft guns (unlawful)
A juvenile out in public with airsoft BB guns (unlawful)
Parents told Andy NOT to take the realistic guns out in public (stupid)
Friends warned Andy not to walk down the street with the realistic looking guns. (stupid)

Andy Lopez started and continued the actions that led to his death. He was old enough and knew better and yet decided to take his chances.

While this is a tragic occurrence to blame the officer when I would be willing to bet all the critics would FAIL a similar series of shoot/no-shoot scenarios is pathetic.

Deputy Gelhaus will be cleared and I can only hope all of you move on from this and perhaps take steps to stop a similar incident by keeping realist-looking bb guns out of the hands of your children unless you do your part as a responsible parent and keep an eye on your kids.

  • He was shot 7 times

The young sweet 13 year old was shot at without warning 7 times or more if I'm not mistaken and to top it all of he was handcuffed afterwards while laying in the floor dead. Although some might argue that his death was Andy's parents responsibility, that is an ignorant thing to say because just like many other little boys Andy has the right to play with whatever toys he finds interesting. I can erasure you he is not the only 13 year old boy playing with a toy gun so why was he shot nobody knows the actual story but one thing I do know is that an innocent 13 year old little boy is not responsible for his own death.

  • He shouldn't've died!

Andy was 13 years old. Everyone makes dumb mistakes, so why did he have to die for his? Those police officers that day were wrong! They shouldn't've killed him! Did he shoot at the cops? No. Did he charge towards the cops? No. Well then they shouldn't've shot him! Point. Blank. Period!

  • Not at all

If it was not a real weapon he should not have been shot at all. The officer should have gave him enough time to react to their instructions. I do think that Andy should have been more careful but he should not have gotten killed or even shot once. The cop should not have panicked.
