Without friends, it's hit-or-miss. Some teammates will communicate, but most won't. Many teammates will do their own thing and land across the map from the rest of your squad. This makes staying alive a bit more difficult. If you go into the later stages of the game without some members of the squad, it's going to be difficult because the last few squads generally have all their members.
With friends, however, it's a blast, especially if they're using voice communications. While winning is the obvious goal, the journey is plenty of fun with friends.
They've been making a lot of updates to the game and many would argue it's a better PUBG (and free on top of that). I'd say it's well worth a try. It can be a bit frustrating as you get used to things, but stick to it for a bit and you'll probably enjoy it at least moderately.
