Is genetic engineering in humans more acceptable if it is restricted to removing congenital defects in babies?

  • Genetic engineering in humans is more acceptable if it is restricted to removing congenital defects in babies.

The purpose of medicine is to give people longer and better lives. Any treatment that could remove congenital defects in babies would serve this purpose. If genetic treatments could be used to remove these defects, doctors have a duty to pursue them. Parents would also want the best for their children.

  • It Could Be

I believe people would find the use of genetic engineering more acceptable if it was limited to removing congenital defects in babies. Although, I believe this could also lead to disparity because who will these services be available to? Will the services be available to all babies, rather from wealthy or poor families? Will taxpayers have to help pay for this high cost service since health care has been changed in the United States?

  • That's the goal, isn't it?

The term for that branch of science is more widely known as eugenics. And yes, eugenics is more acceptable when it's being done for the overall health of the baby. There is no reason why medical science should not correct congenital defects in babies. If it can be done before birth, even better.

  • How its presented

Whether or not genetic engineering on humans is accepted or not all depends on how it is presented to the public. If what they are doing is presented in a way that makes it seem moral, like this topic does, then it will for sure be more widely accepted by citizens.

  • That is positive.

Yes, genetic engineering in humans is more acceptable if it is restricted to removing congenital defects in babies, because then we are all sure that the engineering is used for something that we all can agree for the most part is positive. We do not agree on whether we should use genetic engineering to evolve as a species, or create robot clones.
