Is it fair that auto insurance rates are more expensive for males under the age of 21 than for females?

  • Insurance is based on statistics.

Insurance charges are based on how likely a given person is to receive payments from that insurance. Young males are the most likely to get into car accidents, so they pay the most for car insurance.
What would be "unfair" would be charging people the least likely to get into an accident the same as the higher risk group.

  • Yes, because there is greater risk.

This higher auto insurance rate for young males has been based on statistical assessment of risk, as all insurance is. If there is more risk of young men getting into accidents that cost the company money, then of course females should pay less if they are going to have a lower risk of accident.

  • Stats say so

Car insurance companies decide how much the driver pays for insurance from a number of criteria. This includes age, experience driving and gender. Why gender? Well, first of all, men are 77% more likely to cause car crashes than women, and 10% less likely to wear a seatbelt. Also, male drivers younger than 25 are more likely to participate in risky behaviors, such as street racing. Men also drive more miles than women. Also, since the type of car you buy affects your insurance rates, and men usually chose models that are pricier to insure, that might be another factor. And between 1999 and 2005, a survey shows that 175 000 men died from a car crash compared to a 82 000 women, and the FBI reports that 536 000 men were arrested for DUIs, and 174 000 women were arrested. Men drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol more than women. In fact, the number one cause of vehicle fatalities among teenagers is alcohol, so insurance providers take DUI’s (Driving Under the Influence) seriously. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, men caused 81% of DUI caused crashes. And you may argue that it is sexist to charge women more for health insurance, but not to charge males for car insurance, but health is based on chance, and if you speed it’s your own decision, just like smoking (which increases your health insurance).. Therefore it is your own responsibility to drive.

  • Yes and no, because it's just another privilege which exist for all people.

Same is true for life insurance: its more expensive for men because men cost them more money.
    There is privilege all around...

I've been let go with a warning for speeding, because I was a female = female privilege

Men in the same job as a woman will make 10-20% more money = male privilege.

Women must take time off work to have a baby, while fathers do not, so men have the privilege of being given consideration for positions that need someone without a chance of maternity leave = male privilege.

Men have a higher chance of promotions for the same reason = male privilege

On the other hand, women get special considerations in getting maternity leave (vs men asking for paternity leave) = female privilege.

Women can be stay at home moms without being viewed as deadbeats/slackers, while society views stay at home men as weak/less than = female privilege.

Men aren't viewed as had fathers because he is too driven in his career, while women are = male privilege.

Men are told to man up, while women can get men to help bc we are weaker = female privilege.

Men buy condoms, he's responsible; women buy condoms, she is a whore. = male privilege

Men don't get creeper our at Wal-Mart because of the creepy man following them = male privilege

Men don't have to carry the baby, stop drinking (and taking needed medications), experience morning sickness, extreme heartburn, labor, delivery, experience having their crotch stitched, or have Boobs fill up to feel like volcanoes, but they still get the baby named after their family = extreme male privilege

    And on and on...
Each one on its face seems unfair, but when comparing it to the other ways, it is understandable and leveled out.

What's unfair is how so many of these companies can be considered nonprofit and not pay tax when we have to pay tax on our income before we pay our policy premiums. = corporate privilege

How about the privilege of the president and his family can drive insurance free, on our dime.

  • It's only fair when considering other unfairness/privileges...

Same is true for life insurance: its more expensive for men because men cost them more money.

  • Yes, it is fair for males under the age of 21 to have higher rates for auto insurance.

This is more of a "for most" question. In my case, I would prefer to ride with my 21 year old son rather than his 21 year old girlfriend. However, in most cases, men are more likely to take risk. They like to "hot rod," "speed," and "show-off." Girls tend to be a little more timid.

  • Its just plain sexist

I have been driving for almost 3 years and never ha a ticket or been in any kind of accident but even still I have to pay an arm and a leg for insurance. How is it fair for me to pay more just based on some stupid stat that someone mad. If women were charged more it would be "sexist" but because we are men "it only makes sense" WTF America

  • Fair is Different than Sensible

I believe that it is hard to argue that males should be charged more than females for car insurance. It is not fair at all; however, as I've been told many times by my father, life is not fair. It is sensible that insurance companies do this because all they do is run the numbers. Males under 21 are more likely to wreck than females under 21. It is as simple as that. Fair? No. Sensible? Yes.

  • Why charge me more for something I can't change.

I am born a male and didn't have a choice. The stats may have some weight but you can't assume I'll be one of those people. Why don't we take stats on ethnicity's and driving records? Because it's wrong and you can't judge a person by something they have no control over or even better something they have no yet done. Reminds me of the movie minority report. I can understand charging young drivers more as they have no experience and experience is determined under the same criteria for everyone. As well these stats don't paint the full picture. I know some crazy female drivers that have heavier foots than most guys I know. The girl on he forum even mentioned she got away with speeding tickets because she was a female. Now consider how many imes women got off tickets and charges strictly for being a female, now you can see how the stats aren't truly accurate. Sorry for spelling mistakes but when I go fix it, it just erases some content.

  • This is sexist!

I don't care what statistics say. I'm an 18 year old male driver with a scratch free record. Not one ticket or car accidents. But yet pay close to $300 a month For being a safe driver pretty much. How in the world is that fair! 100% sexism! Male and female drivers should be equal and pay the same amount a month. Everyone would be treated equal, the only reason for your car insurance to go up is if you get into a car crash and actually have a reason for it to go up. What kind of excuse is oh you're a male driver we get to charge you more

  • No, If women want to be equal then they should pay the same insurance as men.

It makes me really mad to see these feminists going around saying they want to be equal yet they do not want to be equal when it is against them? If they want to be equal then have them pay equal rates. Make it so that not one gender is at a advantage when they find policies.

  • It is Sexist, but why won't Feminist admit it?

From ObamaCare Facts on why men shouldn't think it's unfair that they shoulder higher insurance costs to make it more affordable for women: "About 50% of people in America are women, this includes your mother, sister, grandmother, wife, daughter, etc. You may not need maternity services, but your mother and many other females you care about in your life did or will."

So feminists in the name of "equality" take one for your dad, brother, uncle (and any other makes on your team. My girlfriend (who just got into 2 accidents) and her mom (who always gets out of speeding tickets) pay less than me for TWO VEHICLES!!!!

  • NO. Extremely wrong

Men's auto insurance rates shouldn't be higher than women's. First of all its just plain sexist and second of all, if people are complaining about "equal rights for women" and we "have" to have a female president, than why are men's taxes higher. Think about it, if we have to have "equal rights for women's pay than why are men paying more. All men aren't just naturally bad drivers. Women can be bad drivers too but if we jack up the prices for their taxes we would be accused for being sexist or ruing equal rights. And naturally, men sometimes work harder than women

  • Why is this a thing

We are in an equal society and everyone in this country should be treated fairly no matter the race, sexuality, religious views, etc. Everyone deserves the equality and the insurance companies reasoning is flawed due to the facts that say males are more aggressive. Females can be just as aggressive

  • No, it's not fair!!

It's not fair because it's illegal to charge women more for health insurance so it should be illegal to charge men more for car insurance. Besides, technically men ARE considered safer drivers, it's just that men on average drive more than women that's why men have to pay more for car insurance, not because they drive more aggressively

  • Men by Federal law have to subsidies women's health insurance even though they cost insurance companies 36% more.

Men by Federal law have to subsidies women's health insurance even though women cost insurance companies 36% more. Also, the only prescriptions that it is against Federal law to charge a co-pay for are ones that women take so again men have to help subsidies women prescriptions. Many states also have laws that say insurance companies can't change women more for assisted living insurance. Even though women cost much much more for the insurance companies because they live so much longer in assisted care facilities. So for EVERY type of insurance were women have much higher claims the government pass laws saying women cant be charged more. The government supports a "War on Men".
