Is John Fruscante the greatest living guitar player?

Asked by: stebs
  • YES. He is.

You don't need to see John playing to know that it's him. He has one of the most iconic styles of playing. A beautiful funky bluesy filthiness of a tone. And aside from being technically proficient at the instrument, the music is great, which i find the downfall of a lot of "shredders" who's names are thrown around when the question of the greatest guitar player comes up. He's defiantly one of the best improvisers out there. Never playing anything the same twice. And such an inspiration

  • Clapton & Hendrix

Eric and Jimi are the 2 greatest without doubt followed by Jimmy Page and Carlos Santana then you have Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy and many others who come before this dude. Clapton and Hendrix defined the modern guitar solo like no others and they are the best.

  • How about hell naw.

Agree with those other guys. As long as Jimmy Page and Clapton live you don't even stand a snowballs chance in hell. If you mean only modern guys then you are wrong also as Jack White still lives. Not even mentioning other living guys like Keith Richards or Buddy Guy.

  • Are you serious?

Listen, John Frusciante is a talented player who can play multiple different styles. Yet his skill with the instrument is far inferior to Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. Quite simply, he's not as technically talented with the instrument. Plus, if you are looking at influence, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, B. B. King, and Chuck Berry are all alive and kicking. No matter what criterion you use to judge guitar playing, Frusciante fails to reach the standard of the greatest living player.

  • Not impressed ... Sorry.

I'd never heard of the dude until today. I listened to him play on a few Youtube clips and wasn't moved or impressed at all. Not sure why anyone would even think he's in the top ten. I suppose he has potential but unless and until he produces a lot of really good material he'll remain a novelty for now.

  • Nope, he isn't even close to this title

When you've got guitarist like Robby Krieger, Eric Clapton, and Brian May all still living and playing who all had legendary careers with the greatest bands like The Doors, Cream, and Queen and they STILL have their skills and their playing ability just blows this wannabe pretty boy grunge rocker off of the stage. Sure he may be a good guitarist but he is nowhere near the guitarist I mentioned above.
