  • He is obvioisly a Bosnian or Bosniak that disregaurds his muslims code of life

Niko Cant be Russia because he claims not to be russian two the Trip From Russia o NYC would take longer than 3 months and also No Major wars have hapoend in Russia During that time that niko would have grown up exepct the Chechen war And Also He wouldnt be Slovne Because Slovenia had very little Invlovement in the Yugoslav wars AND CANNOT BE SERBIAN Because i hate serbs and also Niko's story also says he Smugglded Drugs and people to Italy Serbia is Land Locked and He cannot be Albanian Bcause of no wars but in Kosovo But like serbia kosovo is land locked so that Leves Croatia Bosnia and Bulgarian He wouldnt be Croat because when he speaks He sounds more of a cyrillic type language and also Bellic is not Croat And isnt Bulgarian and bulgaria was not in any wars either So That Leves Bosnian/Bosniak Niko's Name Bellic is popular in Bosnia, Bosnia Also has a few major Port Town in the Western part and these oceans go to Italy And Bosnia was a mian Nation in the wars And Bosnia is awsome and the 7th Muslim Brigade was one of the largest Fighting groups for bosnia and it was made up of Bosniaks(Bosnian Muslims) wich make up 67% of Bosnia so Niko Bellic is a Bosniak who forgets his Past Islamic Life

  • Niko is Bosnian

Niko was fresh of the boat. So this proves he is not Serbian due to the fact that Serbia is a land locked country. Niko fought in the Bosnian war. Bosnia is not a land locked country. He has spoken in full sentances in Bosnian. Though Bosnian and Serbian are almost the exact same language the fact that He was fresh off the boat proved he cant be serbian due to the fact that serbia is land locked. Niko also fought in the Bosnian war so he most likely wouldnt be Croation

  • Yes he is

He is a Bosnian Serb who fought in the Bosnian war so yes he is Bosnian Bosnia is made up of 52% Bosniaks 31% Serb 14% Croats with a small number of Jews and Roma everyone that lives in Bosnia is referred to as Bosnian but like a mentioned above there are 3 Ethnic groups who are Bosnian he is a Serb a BOSNIAN SERB

  • He is Bosnian!

I am Bosnian so here it is,
Niko actually is my name too, and my family is Muslim,
It says Niko Bellic is off the boat, Which Bosnia is not a land locked nation. And a dialogue is actually in Bosnian/Serbian in one part of the game. But can not be Serbian due to the fact Serbia is a land locked nation. I can almost gurantee he is Bosnian, Plus he was fighting in the BOSNIAN war, It even said that in the description of the game.

  • Just remember it's a Rockstar game

I'm not saying this disparagingly, but remember GTA games aren't exactly set in reality, they have their own reality, where the world is just weirder, USA is basically an amalgamation of all kinds of different USA's, including conspiracy theories, hypernationalist "Eagleland", hollywood etc. versions of USA, simply whats most interesting for a video game. Definitions of things are a little looser, and nationalities get mixed up simply to be cool.

With that in mind, I don't have sources, but I knew even beforehand that he was in the Bosnian Wars as a young man, possibly in promotional material if not in the game. It's a sensitive topic to talk about, even in regards to a video game, but with his name and supporting characters in mind (one of the villains is his previous commander or something), he is closest to a Serb. Now, this can be Serbian Serb or Bosnian Serb, but if he was a combatant in the Bosnian War, then he can only be a Bosnian Serb, since the official story is that it was a civil war within Bosnia. Once again, this is a sensitive topic and everyone has their own version of this, but according to the various International Courts and journalists, military and paramilitary forces from Serbia were involved as well, so only Rockstar knows what they were intending for him to be. Since he mentions various illlegal activities all around the Balkans and that part of Europe, I think even Italy was mentioned, he could very well just be a generic 'Balkan' soldier, if that's the backstory they wanted.

Once again, when you're operating in a fictional piece where the world is heavily distorted for the sake of story and style, like GTA, South Park etc., there really isn't a point in applying realistic rules to things.

  • He's Croatian without a doubt.

Given the fact that the story is set in the late 90's and that the only war going on was the civil war in Yugoslavia then it limits his ethnicity to either: Albanian (Kosovar), Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian. He can't be Albanian since his surname is definitely not. Unlikely to be Bosnian since it is Christian (Niko abbreviation of Nikola - common Orthodox name). Montenegrin ( = Serbian) in a way were passive in the war. Macedonians really only got engaged in the war in around 2001 when they fought against Albanian insurgents. So either Serbian and Croatian. In the game there is some dialogue in Serbian or if otherwise Serb-Croat. In the end he's cousin is married by a Catholic priest. Croatians are Catholic and that is a big divide among Serbs and Croats. A common argument is that Serbs are also Catholic. True but only less than 5%. In Serbia 85% are Serbian Orthodox and the rest are other religions (Islam, Protestantism, etc...). So it is unlikely that he is a Serb.

  • He is Serbian, Bosnian or from Montenegro. All Balkan.

The curse words in game are actually Serbian since there is not Bosnian language and it is a dialect of Serbian. Even some scenes in game have a full Serbian lines with Niko, Darko, and Roman speaking. So him being Russian? I call bull on that. You said first mission to get russian clothes? The only Russian thing in those clothes is that Hat of theirs with Russian emblem. So no you are wrong.

  • Bosnia is not in Eastern Europe.

The back of the box on GTA IV says Niko Bellic is 'straight off the boat from Europe' and they say he is from Eastern Europe too. But one of the first missions is to visit a RUSSIAN store to buy RUSSIAN clothes. As well as that, Bosnia and Herzegovina is part of the Balkan countries which is NOT in Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe are mostly countries bordering Russia that are in Europe. Based on his accent, Mr Bellic is most likely either: Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Belorussian. Polish people are entitled under EU law to emigrate to any other EU country. This would be cheaper, so he would be more likely to go to UK, France or Germany. So Mr Bellic is most likely Russian.
