Is nuclear energy needed as an alternative energy source? |
Yes, I believe nuclear energy is needed as an alternative energy source. Although the push for alternative energy has been fairly substantial in the past two decades, we are still today most reliant on oil and fossil fuels. Solar energy has become a pretty decent alternative energy source, but applying it to every practical use is still not the most efficient source of energy right now. Nuclear energy is so much more powerful than current alternative sources like solar energy, and it can be utilized extremely well and make us less dependent on conventional resources like oil.
Coal, as a fossil fuel, will run out eventually. Coal mining deaths make headlines in the United States and around the world as modern humans need electricity to function. Nuclear power, though more expensive, is safer to produce than electricity made by burning coal. There are no greenhouse gases and reactors have a lifespan of 40 years. There is no reason why coal companies can't diversify their holdings and switch to creating nuclear power. Energy companies have plenty of money to make the switch, buy equipment and re-train employees for nuclear power that is safer and cleaner than coal.
Nuclear energy is inherently risky, but it is a worthwhile alternative to oil, coal and natural gas. Ultimately, America and other advanced nations should aim for 100 percent production of energy from renewable resources, but the current technology does not seem to support this as a practical goal. Nuclear energy is a good bridge to a wiser future policy.
We still have enough reasonable energy alternatives that nuclear energy should be a last-resort type of supply. With all the natural gas still untapped on our continent, we should be focusing on safer methods of powering our future. Nuclear plants cause anxiety and can lead to devastation far too easily if something goes wrong.
There are many many other sources of energy much better for the environment and renewable at that that we could use for alternative energy, water and air among them. Nuclear power has already proven to have many problems, so why do we think it would be a good alternative energy source given that? It makes no sense. So no, nuclear energy is not needed as an alternative energy source, there are plenty of better options that exist.
