With out doubt climbing is a sport and can easily be considered more athletic than football, baseball ectetra. There are always competitions for teams and individuals. There are different competitions dedicated to different styles, such as bouldering, lead climbing, speed climbing and more. This covers the skill and the competition part.
Rock climbing is an all year round sport. However, some may argue that it is an activity or hobby. To counter this one could argue that people who climb just as a hobby are not participating in it as a sport. Like when someone plays rugby in a park with some mates, there is minimal sport to that, however when playing an official game it is more sport like. The same goes for climbing.
