Is sectionalism in the US more harmful than nationalism?

Asked by: jacandmac
  • Sectionalism good or bad?

Sectionalism has been a problem since, modern and old times in u.S history. Sectionalism cause more harm then good. The economy plummets, since the states are working against and not with each other as they are usually. The sectionalism is just a factor in history and modern times which is separating America from reaching its full potential.

  • I hate sectionalism!

Sectionalism is terrible! We are the UNITED States of America, and we must come together as one people and as one family in order for our country to work. The human body cannot work correctly without its legs or its head, just as America cannot work correctly without ALL of its states and territories.

  • Just plain dangerous

Sectionalism is the belief that one should worry about the the area they reside in.This is not a good idea because in order to function as a country we need to work together because united we stand divided we fall.I mean look at what happened when we only worried about one portion our government shutdown. This belief is just plain dangerous we need to think as a country as nationalism.

  • Danger of Sectionalism

The current attitude that the country has is one of intolerance. It goes much deeper than politics. This divides people. The far right media (Fox) perpetuates attitudes of fear, anger, and distrust. We all need to accept that different areas and people have diverse agendas. Working together to compromise is what this nation was founded on. This Nationalist view has been lost.

  • Yes, it is.

Sectionalism is the reason why civil wars erupt. Sometimes civil wars NEED to happen and nations require a radical change in regime. However, when the cause behind is one section putting their personal desires ahead of the national interest (or basic human rights) then it is NOT a good thing.

  • North VS South, East VS West, White VS Black

Yes, sectionalism is just a pretty word for segregation. Segregation is harmful no matter what way you look at it. The Civil War in the US was caused by various means of sectionalism, North versus South, White versus Black, Etc.
Even today the most prevalent act of sectionalism is Rich versus Poor. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer and there is no end in sight.
Also look at gang wars, East versus West. How many innocent people have been caught in the cross-fire of one side trying to state it's dominance over the other?

  • It helps in the long run

Sure. You have me. The Civil War was caused by sectionalism, but that is not it. Sectionalism provides, in modern America, competition. Economically, regions like New England, the "Deep South", and the West Coast, want to prove their dominance. Economically, this provides an incentive to work harder. Also, look at the culture. Sports teams develop a sense of sectionalism among the US citizens. Whether you like the Yankees or the Red Soxs, for example. This is not the harmful sectionalism like during the Civil War. Instead this, less intense sectionalism is helpful
