While I think that goodness and giving forward is a good thing, I do believe that being smart is more important, because when you are smart you are less likely to be taken advantage of. Unfortunately there are people who are opportunists who would take advantage of those that are too good to them. I think being smart would help avoid or at least cut down that type of situation.
While being smart may seem like the better choice, goodness will always make the largest influential impact on your own life as well as others lives, sometimes its better to not over think something and just do it for the sake of being helpful, just because you see someone being bullied and don't want to join the brawl because you think you won't be able to help, doesn't make it any better than stepping in which would be the best thing to do in that situation.
Undirected power (think gun or explosion) is dangerous.
Well directed effort does not need power to be effective for good. (Think surgeon)
Smart and selfish tends to succeed at a high cost to others.
Smart and evil generally needs people to rally together to oppose it.
Good, even without exceptional intelligence works well within the bounds of society.
People who play well with others succeed by working well with other people.
People enamored with their own intelligence often don't fit well into society.
Another common problem for people who think too highly of their own intelligence is they often are more concerned with speaking rather than listening.
He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.
