Is society declining in places where religion is waning?

  • Love Your neighbor

For centuries one can find true followers of the teachings of Jesus Christ as they have expressed Hope and Peace in the midst of life's Joys and turmoils. These same followers have demonstrated and displayed these teachings through actions of Love and self sacrifice for others throughout history which has improved society throughout the world. Jesus said he gave a new commandment That we love one another, as He has loved us...By this all men may know that we are his followers, if we have love one to another...Interesting that the corrupted religious people of the day wanted him dead.

  • Yes, society is declining in places where religion is waning.

Yes, society is declining in places where religion is waning. If you look at places where religion is waning you will see a decline in birth rate, a drowning economy, increased divorce rate and crime rates, and an overall decrease in productivity. China has a booming economy along with an increase in religious believers.

  • Religion often equals morality.

Yes, society is declining in places where religion is waning, because religion often encourages people to act in a way that is more moral. With religion, people often work for a higher purpose. Without religion, people often try to get all that they can for the here and now. Where religion declines, people live for more secular things.

  • I think that society is declining in places were religion is waning.

I think that society is declining in places were religion is waning. Take the United States of America for example. They are turning away from a lot of their religious beliefs that the country was founded upon in the first place, and things are just getting worse and worse over there.

  • Illusion of a "good" living standard

The societies with the so-called high standards of living are those with the high rates of psychological problems, all kinds of abuse, inequality, self-inflicted diseases, etc. People are fooled into thinking they have it good, when almost every aspect of their life is technology-saturated. The very things which we once associated with being human are being eroded slowly but surely. The long-term effects of living in such an age are only beginning to emerge.

  • Society is declining where religion is waning.

Society has been in decline here in the America while religion has also been waning. I cannot speak for other places around the globe, but I can speak for America. I have noticed that as our moral foundations and religion have been becoming weaker, so have our societal ideals. From our pop culture, to our work ethic, America has entered into a great financial deficit because of it.

  • Religion Waning Because It Won't Change With the Times

Society isn't declining because religion is waning. Religion is waning because it seems to lack answers for contemporary humans. How can someone believe in a God that believes gays shouldn't marry? How can grieving parents cling to God when their child kills him or herself because of bullying? Ancient religions seem to have little hope or answers for our young people, and if religions don't adapt, they will wither away into nothingness.

  • Society is not declining in places where religion is waning.

Religion is not important in the modern world and people should be glad that it is declining. Religion had a place a long time ago, but it has given way to science and enlightenment. Society is not waning where religion is declining, but it is advancing. Many religious people refuse to accept scientific truths.

  • Morality's Author Not a God

Religion has never been the author of morality or ethics. It has only been a vehicle by which these things have been transmitted through culture. Societies that exhibit a reduction in moral consideration do so more for political or geo-political reasons. Religious "differences" (as related to societal decline) are more often the cause of this loss of moral consideration.

  • Nope

On the contrary, places with the lowest amount of religion, such as Western Europe, currently enjoy the highest standards of health and living. Now that's not to say that going away from religion automatically leads to those things, but it destroys the argument that losing religion leads to society suffering.

  • Religion erodes society

Religion is at odds with our society since it creates a secondary moral code and identity that takes away from a more important culture hegemony. Religion creates and us versus them mentality and quickly turns to hate and bickering as each group attempts to assert its dominance and moral correctness. Organized religion no longer represents the basic teachings of holy texts or religious figures and is constantly used to oppress and harm others, which is incredibly hurtful to society.

  • No, society does not need religion to do well.

Religions do provide a strong backbone to society's values, but religious values are largely based on the values required to be a good citizen to begin with. In a secular world we do still see the value in loving our neighbor without a God to tell us so. By contrast, when religion loses its strong grasp on a culture it opens up room for ethical thought to grow beyond being told how we should behave to how we want to behave.
