The educational system should reinforce basic math and English skills so that adults maintain basic academic competency. The educational system should require students to demonstrate mastery of skills throughout the grades so that the basic skills are ingrained in the students. The educational system should maintain standards of basic mastery of English grammar and composition basics. Upper-level math classes can reinforce basic math skills by requiring the students to conduct calculations manually rather than using calculators to supplement their work.
Basic English and math skills are crucial to functioning in the adult world. We should find a way to make sure these skills are emphasized to youth and youth understand that, without these skills, decent and solid employment are almost unattainable and one then cannot better themselves or take care of their families. These same people can also return to the education system as educators... How could these people actually be trusted to accurately educate the next generation?
Yes, there is a flaw in the educational system when adults do not retain basic math and English skills because after years in the school, people are still unable to learn basic educational skills. The act that many adults are still illiterate shows that the school systems are not teaching students properly and changes need to be made to the country's educational system.
Let's face facts. Our education system is broken. It is tragic to see how many people fail to know basic skills. It does seem like there are schools in this country that will pass students to the next grade just because of their age. More needs to be done to make sure students learn what they need to learn before they advance and the curriculum gets too far ahead of them. One of the biggest challenges is that our system is still pretty reliant on parental and community involvement. When parents sometimes CAN'T be there and the community isn't active, schools fail. We need to find a better way.
