It has never been easier to get published due to the internet. People have easier access to books with tablets and the kindle fire. You can purchase books online and do not have to go get paperback books from books stores. People like how the internet makes it easy and convenient for people to get published and recognized for their work.
In the age of the internet, it has never been easier for someone to be published. Mainstream publishing houses are experiencing financial difficulties in our time, but they are not the entirety of the publishing world. Anyone can write a novel, or a short story, or a poem, or an article and submit it to a mainstream publisher. If they are rejected, they can publish their work online and make a profit. There isn't much money in it but it has ever been so with writing and publishing.
I would say that the hay days for publishing have gone away. Some people will still buy books or read them electronic, but the big days for book buying and reading are not likely to return anytime soon. People are too busy with other things to sit down and read something worthwhile.
This is the time of short attention spans and brief sound bites. The desire just doesn't seem to be there for many people to sit down and spend time reading a book. Even items that are geared to limited attention like newspapers and magazines aren't successful because all the information they contain can be obtained for free on the internet. Even with things like the Kindle being popular, they even have products geared to short attention spans and multi-tasking like watching two television shows at once.
