It is much better to do the right thing because its right than it is to do the right thing under the influence of religion.

  • Religion is an inadequate motivation

    Religion prompts people to be moral with impure motivations. Organized religion promises everlasting life in Heaven as a reward for being moral and eternal suffering in Hell for being immoral, and that is insufficient. People should behave morally because morality is valued. And often, people connect morality with religion and conclude that what is moral is what God commands, which has led to less-than moral actions.
