Japanese porn industry apologizes for forced sex acts: Should governments take a more active role in regulating pornography?

  • Yes, governments should engage with pornography in the same way they engage with any industry

Pornography is not only here to stay; it's a major economic stimulator. Local laws requiring health and safety checks are already in place for porn actors, and are effective in keeping performers (and viewers) safe. Increased government involvement would both protect US citizens who work in the industry and filter out illicit porn, like child pornography, revenge porn, and rape porn.

  • Down with porn.

Government shouldn't just take a more active role in regulating pornography--it should be gotten rid of all together. Porn does nothing but exploit people, and nothing good comes of it. This is even more true when underage children are used to create these disgusting pics and videos. I say get rid of porn once and for all!

  • Yes, but more so with amateur pornography.

The government should take a far more active role in regulating amateur pornography and perhaps a slightly more active role in regulating professional pornography. It should take a more active role in the professional side in order to avoid incidents like the Japanese one and a far more active role in the amateur side in order to avoid "revenge porn" type incidents, such as when a vengeful person distributes explicit photos of a former significant other without their permission. Right now, virtually the only recourse for someone in the latter situation is to attempt to sue for copyright infringement, an arduous and humiliating process. If the government cracked down on that kind of pornography, it might make people think twice about taking vengeance in that manner.

  • Yes, Governments should play an active role in regulating pornography.

Governments should absolutely play an active role in regulating pornography. Pornography not only victimizes the participants but the viewers as well. The government should work to ensure that workers are being treated fairly. They should also work to make sure that the material is not being seen by underage viewers. Pornography can be psychologically damaging when it is in the wrong person's view or hands.
