Maryland becomes 18th state to abolish the death penalty. Should the rest of the country follow?

  • Yes! Take back rights.

America has 6 times the crime rate as Britain and 5 times Australia and yet it still has the death penalty. Also the states with higher crime tend to be with the death penalty. It is against the fundamental right on the international human rights list.

Life imprisonment is a more effective punishment and it costs 4 times as much to sentence someone to the death penalty than life imprisonment. Life imprisonment is the answer for extreme serious crimes like Ariel Castro or murders.

  • sanctity of life

Camus, Dostoyevski and so many others like Dalai Lama explained the reasoning
First, abolition sends a message that we can break the cycle of violence, that we need not take life for life, that we can envisage more humane and more hopeful and effective responses to the growth of violent crime. It is a manifestation of our freedom as moral persons striving for a just society. It is also a challenge to us as a people to find ways of dealing with criminals that manifest intelligence and compassion rather than power and vengeance. We should feel such confidence in our civic order that we use no more force against those who violate it than is actually required.

  • As the rest of the western world has

The death penalty is outdated and barbaric. If we say killing is wrong then how can we justify the law killing a person. What's more there is no way to know that the person is guilty. Plenty of people have been given the death penalty and later been proven to have been innocent. Even if they confess type crime they may still be innocent.

  • True Justice is

Not achieved by replicating the actions of the aggressor but rather by preventing the agresser from committing their actions. If murder is intolerable, then how is it any more acceptable if it is done to anybody? Which of us can say that they are so important that they have the right to whether or not another human being has the right to live? Nobody, thats the answer. You cannot achieve solutions to violence and injustice with violence, its the equivalent of adding fuel to the flame. Whats more, for those complaining that it costs too much to keep prisoners alive, it costs even more to kill them. The cost of a Single Execution is around 5-250 Million per person. Why? Because of the rights that We all have to due process. Why do we give rights to criminals you ask? Because not all "Criminals" are guilty, and it is better to let nine guilty men live than to kill one innocent man. If you frown upon killing of the innocents, then the death penalty should be a true atrocity in your eyes.

  • Yes, we should.

The death penalty costs a lot of money to perform every year. And 5% of death penalty inmates are actually innocent. FIVE percent! That is a LOT of people! Many methods of execution are very painful and cruel; especially hanging, the gas chamber, and the electric chair. And besides: Why would we kill to show that killing is wrong?

  • Yes the rest of the United States should follow the lead Maryland and abolish the death penalty.

The death penalty should be abolished in the United Stated because it is unfairly imposed on people of color and those who cannot afford a proper legal defense. My many cases the decision to file a death penalty case is made by one person (the district attorney) and the decision is based upon cost factors, rather than the merits of the case.

  • The death penalty serves no purpose.

The death penalty does not prevent crime or serve as a deterrent, it is inhumane and primitive, and the drugs used are not foolproof and in fact may cause more suffering than people realize. It's not even cheaper. Because of due process, it costs more to kill a prisoner than keep him, with legal appeals and counsel.

  • No, we need to keep the death penalty.

We are housing too many murderers in our judicial system as it is. I use to think the death penalty was cruel, but then I thought about the victims losing their lives; survivors losing their loved ones. What right does someone who ended another persons life have to live? They forfeited that right the minute their victim(s) took their last breath. We need to keep the death penalty and stop supporting these low life's.

  • We need the death penalty

If this country continues to just detain murders and rapists we will become a country of overcrowded over funded prisons. We send a message to criminals that violate peoples rights that they will loose their rights to be protected. Eye for and Eye societies have less crime than America does.

  • banning death sentence

Death sentence should stay allowed just for the fact we should not be paying higher taxes for people who are murderers, rapists, and pedofiles. The taxes we pay should be able to buy those bullets to shoot them and then the rest to paying off our debt to other nations and country's.

  • In some cases it's the right action

Housing inmates cost a significant amount of money in our tax dollars. It makes perfect sense in some cases where there are multiple eye witnesses and multiple homicides.
Do you think James Eagan Holmes deserves to live when he did not extend the same option to the multiple sons and daughters he took from parents ?

  • No, we need to keep the death penalty.
