Mine Ban Treaty (Ottawa Treaty): Are smart mines an insufficient alternative?

  • No responses have been submitted.
  • Mines Should Be Banned Completely

Smart mines are no better than regular mines, although they seem to do better than just regular mines that can be stepped on at any time. Smart mines are supposed to be able to be detonated by remote and can supposedly be destroyed at the end of a conflict. Yet mines set into the ground can cause severe pain and dismemberment in addition to death in a very destructive way.

  • No, smart mines are a wise development and fair use of warfare tactics.

No, smart mines are not an insufficient alternative, because they allow a nation to build its defenses and military force, but still allowing for a way to protect civilians and particularly innocent children after a conflict. Smart mines allow a nation to safely remove the mines after a conflict without injuries or deaths to innocents, without disarming themselves completely.
