I can't believe this wasn't rehearsed. If they had done ANY rehearsing at all, there's no way Steve Harvey could have messed up the reading. Without rehearsing, Steve Harvey didn't have an opportunity to express any confusion he may have had; instead, he just had to go out there and do it without any prior practice.
Really guys? How hard is this? When you're hired as the professional announcer for an international competition, it would seem like a no-brainer to at least go over the final list of winners before the actual event. Can anyone spell the word "prepare"? Imagine the embarrassment nd humiliation of that young woman who was named winner only to have the crown taken off her head and placed on someone else. And for what? For the egregious and totally preventable mistake of someone who was just didn't pay attention.
Yes, rehearsing the Miss Universe winner announcement may have helped Steve Harvey give the right name. Rehearsal often improves performance. However, it is not a perfect answer. There are many factors that may have played a part in the error--fatigue, misreading the card, a secret opinion of his own, bright lighting, etc. In the end, the element of surprise may outweigh the desire for rehearsal.
Should it have been kept secret from the contestants? Would seeing her real reaction have changed the viewership this got? I believe he should have gotten the chance to rehearse before being expected to read off so many unique foreign names live on television. I really doubt the contestants would have cared.
