North Korea launches test missile: Is North Korea an actual threat to the United States?

  • Largest standing army

North Korea has the single largest standing army today. They also have a dictatorship for a government, and leader that has sworn future violence. To ignore this is unforgiveable. While it is unlikely that North Korea will do something as foolish as attack the United States, it is a possibility.

  • US vs NK

In this life time we would like the think that everyone is at piece with the united states. But truth be told there are a lot of dark secrets that us as Americans will never understand, when you are talking about another country with dangerous weapons, we are all a danger to ourselves, and the people around us, you see what happens to people that get a gun, they have no self control, so how can we trust any country that has dangerous missiles, it would be wonderful if we all could get along, Peace on Earth.

  • Never. That would mean destruction for North Korea itself.

Article 51 of the U.N. Charter states

"Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security. Measures taken by Members in the exercise of this right of self-defence shall be immediately reported to the Security Council and shall not in any way affect the authority and responsibility of the Security Council under the present Charter to take at any time such action as it deems necessary in order to maintain or restore international peace and security."

    So
If DPRK does attack United States,
USA along with its allies, with rights from the binding UN charter, gets the right to attack DPRK on the basis of self defense...

On the other hand, the DPRK allies won't be able to do anything as it is not a UN member and hence they have no right to retaliate.

  • They're pride would be their downfall.

I have no doubt they believe they could win against the US. Realistically, the threat they pose is that they are unpredictable. At best they could deliver a surprise attack. In a full on conflict however, they would be destroyed very quickly. All we'd have to do to kill them all is cut off humanitarian aid.

  • Yes because of nuclear proliferation.

A rouge state led by a borderline psychopath armed with nukes is most certainly a threat to the United States. Most of this threat however, isn't so much about direct armed conflict as it is about proliferation and spread of nuclear capability and other weapons grade material to third party groups and terrorist orgs. Already we've seen North Korea secretly attempt to build a nuclear reactor in Syria (taken out by Israel in 2007); assist with the design and construction of Iranian & Pakistani ballistic missiles; and most recently, attempt secret arms dealings with Cuba. Combine these acts with North Korea's continual disrespect for human rights and international laws and we should know what their intentions are.

  • Yes they are

Yes they are an actual threat to the United States they want to control the world and to be able to take us over, however if they launch they will be taken out immediately and very fast since they are not prepared for our Military to go in and wipe them out.

  • North Korea (DPRK) has not much power

Though they may have an armed forces size of 9 million troops (including reserve and paramilitary), they are not nearly as well equipped or trained as the 2 million US forces(including reserve and paramilitary). Not to mention numerous close US allies (the NATO alliance) while DPRK has only one loose ally which is China. Even China is against any sort of war against the west because that will mean that China will lose its biggest market. Most products in the west are made in china and traded to the west. The Chinese will lose many many jobs and trade income, which is something they want to avoid. Of course Japan and South Korea (Not part of NATO) will also fight the North Koreans.

The US will even win in the numbers game, let alone technology
Nato forces = about 5 million possibly 6 million
South Korean and Japanese forces = 5.3 million (mostly paramilitary)
TOTAL (lowest estimeate) = 10.3 million
    VS
    DPRK forces = 9 million

DPRK is insignificant in military power. I doubt they could even defeat South Korea considering their apparent lack of technological advancement let alone the US. While DPRK can pose a considerable (but defeatable) threat to South Korea and Japan, they are so insignificant a threat to the US.

Granted DPRK may have nukes. But they know that if they fire even one, China will turn their back on them and US will end their history,

  • It probably is not

The country against the United States of America that we are talking about it probably not a threat in the smallest bit. The power of the United States of America is much stronger than the power of the country of North Korea. We are always ready for things against this country.

  • World War 3 and total annihilation of North Korea

One nuclear tipped medium-range ballistic missile does not a nuclear power make. If Pyongyang ever actually launched a nuclear missile/bomb on the USA or any of her allies, North Korea would become either A) A parking lot of nuclear impregnated cement or B) Quarantined for the next 100 years due to complete nuclear fall out. Stupid. The Jong regime has always been aggressive with its rhetoric but could never actually fight any war against the USA realistically. Especially with nuclear arms.

  • They have a primitive military

Although North Korea spends a larger % of GDP on military... Keep in mind that the GDP of North Korea is crap... Its the equivalent of a developing country... And even IF it spent every last penny from the citizens on military it still would be nowhere close to what the US has.

Their military still uses soviet-era technology which is totally obsolete compared to our drone program, ridiculous intelligence network and and nuclear ability to plunge the world into a global winter. While North Korea has what??? A pathetic 13 (approx) kt nuke that (although it can be pretty disastrous) that has the ability to wipe out very, very little land.... However if they had Tsar Bomba then they would be trouble... But they don't!

Even IF North Korea went 100% insane and launched an invasion on US homeland... Patriotism would go through the roof and the weapons each citizen would have would out-equip North Korea's average conscript. Their invasion would fail pathetically and their nukes would do little/nothing. I can bet right now that there is a B2 making routine flights over Kim Jong Un's house ready to drop a bomb the minute they declare war.

  • Never. That would mean destruction for North Korea itself.

  • Why would they risk it?

Why would they risk an attack against the USA? The US has the advantage of more people, more money, more allies, and more equipment. Attacking the US would be a suicide mission, and i don't think they are willing to sacrifice there entire country and lose privileges to attack the US.

  • No because of our defenses

We have satellites, ships, subs, ECt, to detect a nuke, or other missile headed to us, and take care of it, as in blow it up. Its very unlikely for north Korea to hit us, by a launch, maby if they use a aircraft, but its very hard to launch a missile and hit us from where they are. And what I heard, is that we have enough nukes to flatten the world, or what I heard. And no one wants to start nuclear warfare. So no

  • They are mentally inadequate.

I'm not here to argue about their small military size or lack of equipment, but I am here to talk about how mentally insufficient they still are compared to countries that have easy access of information and open civilizations.
I would admit that I am no expert physicist. But one thing I do know is that they are not intelligent enough to know about advanced level of quantum mechanics, enough to build nuclear weapons. Building one would require cutting edge research and a high degree in proficiency in the field of Science and Mathematics, that they do not have.
If ever there would be a war, the united states could just use a couple of their nukes to eradicate the threat. With the highest spending country on military spending, north korea is no way a threat at all. The real threat would be Russia and China, but that would be on another argument.

  • North Korea Is Not A True Threat

On terms of military strength, North Korea is not a threat to the United States. It is true that Kim Jong Un has been launching test missiles, but these missiles can barely reach Alaska. The only U.S. state that would be impacted by a missile attack would be Hawaii, and if North Korea attacked Hawaii, there would be a war that even Kim Jong Un would not be stupid enough to start. All in all, North Korea's test firing of missiles is probably just a publicity stunt.

  • North korea is more of a nuisance than a threat.

Comparing by military capabilities, North korea is far behind from the United States. This means that there is no debate as to whether North Korea can make a real damage against the United Ststes. Consequently, there is no real threat, it just that North Korea is seeking international publicity and it is just building image of the supreme leader, Kim jung un
