Climate change is an issue affecting every live thing on the earth now and in the future. Companies with information pertaining to climate change should have and should be required to provide the public with any information they have on climate change and possible causes of climate change. It is a public health issue.
The issue with Exxon Mobile knowing about climate change, is that they hid it from the public, as well as their investors. When they have such a huge impact on the environment and have built an empire on destroying it, I feel they should have let the public know their discoveries years ago. Instead of concealing this information, they could have looked into cleaner ways to be productive for the environment.
Companies should only be forced to release information on pollution that they produce. There are plenty of government funded studies on climate change to produce results on climate change. The only obligation of private companies should be to handle what they directly produce and present true facts about their production to the public.
I don't think companies should be held accountable for their past actions in regards to climate change. It's difficult to accurately know what research Exxon had access to so there is no point in digging in their past. I would rather go after the companies who are polluting our world today because there is no excuse for that anymore.
