People in Manila are living in fear after new Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte called on police and vigilantes to kill drug suspects. Does vigilantism hurt the effort to fight crime?
  • Vigilantism hurts the effort to fight crime.

Yes vigilantism hurts the effort to fight crime because if people are allowed to decide for themselves what is right and wrong there will be many mixed emotions between people. Everyone has a different opinion of right and wrong so eventually it would get out of control. Without a proper meaning of crime then it could never be fought.

  • Sometimes it helps. Sometimes not so much.

The problem with vigilantism is that so many vigilantes conduct foul acts instead of doing the right thing. Vigilantes who have the right hearts can help crime fighting efforts. The goal should be to detain the criminals and then pass them to upstanding police who will handle them according to every letter of the law.

  • Vigilantism hurts crme fighting efforts

Vigilantism hurts efforts to fight crime. People take the law into their own hands, such as in the Philippines. This causes mayhem, and police now have to search for these people while fighting against those that are committed the original crimes. There is a process in place that should be followed.

  • No, it does not.

Aside from the obvious problems with these actions, that drug suspects have not been tried or convicted, not all vigilantism is bad. When the justice system is corrupt or overwork, citizen efforts to reduce crimes and right wrongs might be the only way to solve the growing problem and find justice.
