Several people were when members of right-wing extremists groups holding a rally outside the California state Capitol building in Sacramento clashed with counter-protesters. Is neo Nazism protected under free speech?
  • As much as I hate them yes.

As long as they aren't calling for violence they are protected under free speech. It's hypocritical to ban fascists from protesting, tell them they are wrong and that they are immoral by all means but they have the right to say this kind of thing no matter how disgusting it is. Once you cross the line and call for violence you are no longer protected and should be arrested.

  • Yes of course!

The first amendment protects free speech but not free harm.

We Americans may not agree with Neo Nazi sentiment but we can all agree that anyone can express their beliefs in anyway they want to until it harms others way of expressing themselves. I'd hate to be in the world where people are censored.

  • Neo Nazism is protected under free speech.

Neo Nazism is protected under free speech in America. However, very recently in France Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala, an anti-Semitic stand-up comic was banned from performing, and Israel's parliament is planning to pass a bill outlawing the word Nazi. Both these actions do prove that Neo Nazism is a highly sensitive subject which has huge implications, and, though free speech is a privilege it also comes with certain responsibilities.

  • Yes, you can believe those things, as long as you don't harm anyone.

Freedom of speech means that you can say or believe whatever you want, as long as you don't harm anyone. Therefore, Neo-Nazism is, and should be, protected, as long as you don't actually harm the people that you profess to hate. It's important to allow people to have differing opinions.

  • Free speech gives too much protection to extremists

Free speech is a great idea in theory, but in practice it's full of holes. Groups such as neo-Nazi supporters are allowed to protest as loudly as they want simply because they are given the platform to speak as openly as they want. It's time to reconsider the protections we give to extremist groups and how much this protection allows negative behavior to proliferate.

  • Neo-Nazism is not protected under free speech.

Neo-Nazism is not protected under free speech. Free speech exists to protect citizens from being shuttled away and locked up for criticizing their governments. It exists to encourage debate about critical social issues. Freedom of speech allows for progress. Freedom of speech is not about hate speech. Hate speech is not productive. It does not progress society. Hate speech has no goal other than to subvert.
