Shelley Dufresne and Rachel Respess: Does society treat illegal sexual relationships between older women and teenage boys different than illegal sexual relationships between older men and teenage girls?

Shelley Dufresne and Rachel Respess: Does society treat illegal sexual relationships between older women and teenage boys different than illegal sexual relationships between older men and teenage girls?
  • It sure does!

Women are definitely let off lighter than men and teenage boys are also treated different for sleeping with an older women than girls are for sleeping with an older man. Usually boys are high fived and told they must have 'game' to be able to get an older women in bed. If it were a girl she would be displayed as a victim, even if she consented and wanted it. Older women are given a bit more leeway too. Older men are portrayed as a predator if they sleep with a younger girl. It is not fair, all should be treated equally and if the teenager is over the legal age and consents then that is their choice and noone elses buisness

  • It's considered "sexy" when the woman is older, but taboo and/or gross when the man is older.

There have been enough instances of female teachers being let off that I think there is at least some societal bias. Girls are said to be "taken advantage of" while boys (apparently) choose to have sex with older men. Men are called perverts, women are called cougars. Even though it's the exact same thing, it's treated differently.

  • Yes, there is certainly a double standard.

When we hear stories regarding a sexual encounter with an older man and a teenage girl, the typical response is that the girl is a victim, and the man is a predator. However, its not quite the same when the boy is a teenager. People seem to think that its much less of a big deal, and are much more reluctant to label the older woman a predator. Society definitely treats these two types of relationships very differently.

  • Society treats sexual relationships the same without considering gender

Although the headlines might read differently for a woman sleeping with a teen than it would for a man sleeping with a teen, the justice system will treat them the same. Whereas the woman might be portrayed as lonely and in need of attention, the man might be portrayed as a predator or pervert. However, the bottom line is that they will both go to jail and be treated as social pariahs.

  • Sexual relationships illegal

No I do not think that society treats the illegal relationships between women and men any differently. When sexual relationships are illegal it is no different whether it is a teenage boy and a women or a teenage girl and a man. They are both illegal and they both are gross.

  • There is no longer a discrepancy

There is no longer a discrepancy. This is because these days, when we hear about female pedophiles, they are usually being hauled off to court or arrested. Young men or their friends are becoming more vocal about the criminal acts, and the women are being found out and prosecuted. Social media sometimes plays a role in this.
