Sheriff Arpaio is officially charged with criminal contempt. Should he have been in jail a long time ago?

  • Arpaio should be in jail

Sheriff Arpaio should have probably been arrested a long time ago since he was warned multiple times that his behavior was illegal and refused to stop. At the very least, he should have been removed from office. His policy of racially profiling is shameful and he should not be allowed to continue in a position of law enforcement.

  • His office was criminally mismanaged.

In addition to running racial profiling sweeps against a court order, Sheriff Arpaio is facing a barrage of other complaints. He is also accused of misappropriating close to $100 million in public money to pursue failed investigations, not only into his signature racial profiling sweeps but also into rival police officers.

  • Yes, he should have.

He should have been arrested before. The other law enforcement officials should not have been so linient with their requests and should not have waited so long for him to carry them out. Just becasue they are prisoners does not mean they are not human beings and that they do not have rights.

  • I don't think he deserves to go to jail.

Sheriff Arpaio didn't follow a judge's order and I don't think that warrants a jail term. This is not a criminal we are talking about, so there should be no question about whether he should have been jailed in the past. Yes, his actions may not be popular but he hasn't gone out of his way to break the law. Charging him with contempt is just a matter of procedure.
