  • If they work in our military they should

If Our military can teach them how to use alcohol safely then they should be able to drink because if they use alcohol dangerously then they will be disciplined by our military. If our government can enforce the law, 18 year olds should be able drink alcohol safely. If they are responsible enough to join the military they definitely will be responsible enough

  • Aren't they old enough to die?

This applies to the United States:

Originally the voting age in the U.S. was 21, but it was lowered to 18 because of the draft. The reasoning was if a young man was old enough to be conscripted and sent off to die, shouldn't he be old enough to elect his leaders that would be making those decisions?

So, if an 18 year old is old enough to pay taxes, decided the leaders of his country, and be sent to war as a conscript, shouldn't that individual be old enough for everything else?

  • Works for everyone else

Having a younger drinking age would help ease kids into the prospect of drinking but I think if any such law should be passed it should have several restrictions such as drinking under parental supervision. If it wasn't for the huge taboo that is getting drunk, I think many kids wouldn't be so attracted to it in the first place. In many other places and cultures around the world, drinking is a much more acceptable aspect of everyday life. I think if kids were exposed to it (in extreme moderation) at a younger age they wouldn't be so inclined to go binge drink the first time they encounter alcohol.

  • 18 year olds are able to drink

18 year olds have the physical capacity to grab a bottle of alcohol and drink it. The question should read "Should the institution known as "the United States Government" and the several smaller institutions called "state governments" direct the police forces to leave 18 year olds alone if they see they are drinking and leave store owners alone if they sell it?"

I think for the most part, yes. Intelligent people can handle alcohol and even benefit from the experience. And dumb people, give them darwin awards. The intelligent people are the ones who are truly important.

As to drunk driving. Increase public transportation. I should be able to commute from New York to Chicago by train. You could do that over the same distance in Europe.

  • So, let me get this straight:

We can have people drive cars by 16 years old.
We can have people shipped over seas to shoot people by 18 years old.
But people cannot do harm to their own bodies until 21? Really?

I don't get this reasoning. I believe that sixteen is a valid age, so long as we educate them not to engage in selfish, irresponsible acts.

  • No they should not

I dont think that 18 year olds should be able to drink because according to web md a human body is not done fully maturing until the age of at least 21 and the human brain is not fuly matured yet. Also the addictive ingredients in alochol is subject to really effect people under 21 because there brain is not fully developed.

  • No drinking aloud.

Let's face it: Teenagers can be stupid. Once they reach eighteen, they will most likely like driving, and want to do it more often. If they're introduced to drinking at eighteen, they will get drunk and then brilliantly decide to drive a car. There have been many cases of this mostly against teenagers who are illegally drinking. If we allowed them to drink, there would be many more of these cases, and many more deaths from drunk drivers.

  • Drinking is detrimental to their development

It has now been proven that the brain does not fully mature until the age of 25, it has also been proven that excessive drinking stops the brain from reaching its full maturity.

By allowing young people to drink and stop their brains from reaching their peak we are allowing society to slide down.

  • Alcohol=Poison...Not a good idea!

Alcohol is poison. Do you think it's a good idea to put poison into a developing brain? Education is the best way to help kids stay away from alcohol, but some parents will promote it. It just doesn't make sense. Even though some will say it is a right for 18 year to be able to drink because they are able to serve in the military, they are still developing approximately 25% of their brain.
Alcohol=Poison...Not a good Idea, unless you don't care about your kids!
