  • Schools should have bells

To mark the beginning of the school day, the start and end of periods, and the end of every day. Bells are an easy way to let students know when their class starts if they don’t have a way to get the time. It will also reduce lateness, because if we have a two minute bell before every class, people will realize that they need to get to their class quickly or else they’ll be late. Without bells, students constantly need to check the time to see when they need to be at their next class. For example, if a student was early for school, and sitting by their locker reading a book or doing homework, class could start without them noticing, because there is no bell to tell them class has started, and they could be late for class. Without bells, teachers could accidentally keep their class going for too long, therefore making students late for their next class. Having bells can improve students promptness and in turn, their academic success.

  • Kids are being unfairly late due to bells

Our school is trying out a no bell campus, and it is stressful for teachers constantly watching the clock, and students trying to avoid tardies in other classes. Without bells, teachers forget to dismiss their classes on time, sometimes by a few minutes, making kids run to their next period class. Bells are vital for a large school to keep an orgainized scedule;.

  • Too restrictive for teaching

Students and teachers need to self manage which is a key competency in the New Zealand curriculum. This will develop good habits in children and prepare them well for later life. In everyday life there is no bell to tell us when to do things so why should it be at schools.

  • Loud bells cause damage

Unfortunately many school do not install speakers appropriately so blast them far beyond safe decibel levels. This can create angst for children with ADHD or other disabilities. Research has proven that quiet school environments improves learning outcomes. Also the noise creates nuisance for neighbours causing stress for those having to live in their homes with the noise pollution. Schools need to try and keep good relations with the community and loud bells undermine this. Sometimes these bell systems cost tax payers thousands of unnecessary dollars as well. Teacher and students will step up and take responsibility with keeping time if only their principal would let them.

  • Loud bells cause harm to students, staff and neighbours

Many schools install poor speakers for bell systems and turn them up so loud that they are at decibels exceeding 90+ and can cause instant permanent hearing damage when near speakers. This is especially dangerous for young childrens developing ears. Also, there is much research showing that noisy school environments have negative learning impacts on students, especially those who suffer with various ADHD disorders and the like. Educationally, loud bells or musical bell system cause harm and there is no research that says they are necessary to the functioning of a school. Only emergency bells are necessary. Teachers and students are capable of taking responsibility with learning how to tell time and keeping time. Many schools understand and value safe and quiet learning environments and no longer use bells. Blasting loud noise at students and staff can cause permanent harm. Neighbours near schools may not get decibel damage but have to put up with noise nuisance in their own homes on a daily basis. They have no rights to peace and this causes them stress and anxiety. The whole community has to pay for such distress and harm as well as their tax dollars being used pay for expensive school bell systems. These systems are unnecessary and cause more harm then good.

  • Much less running without bells

It seems like with bells, everyone is rushed. Bells make me feel like im going to be late to class i go to. Without bells i am less nervous in the hallway and less tempted to run. Although some say it is less clean, people jumping out of their seats in the middle of the teachers sentence is not clean

  • Stress with organization and being on time.

With bells people are stressed with getting to class. No one wants detention or getting in trouble so kids are hurrying to class. When I mean hurrying I mean it. Kids run to class stressing to get there on time. Not only that kids stress over their lockers. When people stress they can get overwelmed and stuff binders in their lockers when the get to their its way to messed up. They can't find anything. Without bells everyones lockers are nice and organized and stress decreases.

  • Schools should choose

All schools should have a vote on whether or not to have bells. My school is having a vote tomorrow and I am voting no. However, that is just my opinion, and if people want them, then my school will have them. That is my opinion on bells in school.

  • No more bells

Having bells at school may help teachers take attendance for every class but it stresses the students out. Say someone has a class on the West side of school but after things the bell rings they have another class on the East side of the school so they to rush to get to their class

  • Is that a fire or session end!!

In moden society using the fire alarm for session change is a serious blast from the past. I suprised they are not still ringing a hand bell in the main reception! We have large wide screen projection in halls, Lighting systems that would be at home in theatres, Touch screens in class rooms, ipads and laptops for lessons, but we still use the fire alarm! There is a system being used in Schools in Salford, Swinton & Eccles that plays whatever the school wants for session change and depeding on the zone of the school the sounds are different reflecting the departments. This is the future!

  • Voice Announcements heard in the whole school instead

I go with no school bells because just like some other people for No mentioned that it makes a lot of noise which may damage the students' ears. Just like the first person posted (for NO), I also myself study in Senior School and we also have a high quality bell in our football ground (silver color big) and also a low quality bell inside the school building, when you have climbed the first flight of steps, the bell is on the side. (It is small and grey.) The low quality is okay but the high quality in our football ground is so loud that the bell's noise definitely goes outside school grounds. The thing is that the high quality bell is very close to a school gate and is high quality and outdoors. I think there should be speakers instead. When its time, it should have an auto-announcement made (without any person manually announcing it all the time) like for e.G; (I go to an IB School) "Period 3 has ended. Now Period 4 will be from 10:00am to 10:40am. Thank You Students & Teachers."

  • Schools should not have bells

Schools should not have bells because the bell hurts their ears. I, myself study in High School and the bell over there is a bit loud. We have one, in a hallway (low quality) and one in the Football Ground which is a very high quality bell. The noise of the bell in the Football Ground goes outside and can be heard at a very far distance. The noise can damage any student's ear. But we are lucky in our school. In other schools, they have the very high quality bell, inside the school building which makes double the sound of our Football ground bell.
