  • If they desire

If an athlete under the age of 18 is able to be competitive at the Olympic level, as long as they're doing so legitimately and not with the use of banned substances I have no issue with it, regardless of the sport. Weightlifting isn't a sport that you can have a long, highly profitable career in, seize the time in the spotlight while you can.

  • No, athletes under the age of 18 should not compete in Olympic weightlifting.

Children under the age of 18 should not compete in Olympic weight lifting for the same reason they should not get breast implants. The body is not yet fully done developing and physical stress put upon a teen can stunt or damage their normal growth (the same goes for Olympic gymnasts). Putting such pressure on young bodies can cause lasting and cumulative damage that will adversely affect the athlete at an older age. During the teenage years, athletes may not fully appreciate the extent of the damage that may be done.

  • No, weight lifting is a sport that should be left to fully matured bodies.

Weight lifting puts strain on bones, growth plates, and the spine. Young adults that are under 18 are too young to have fully mature bodies and could cause damage to those areas of the body, causing lifelong pain, stunted growth, and disability. To reach the level of Olympic competition before age 18 would require an athlete to practice a sport at a high level of intensity for a number of years and a sport like weightlifting is not safe for anyone who is not fully mature.
