Should bicyclists be required to wear helmets at all ages?

  • It's like wearing a seat belt in a car

Since we are required to wear a seat belt in a car I believe it's a good idea to make all bicyclists wear a helmet at all ages. It's a good idea to get kids thinking about safety as early as possible. There are way too many child injuries and deaths due to kids and parents not thinking enough about safety.

  • Yes, if they are on roads.

If they are riding on the street with cars then yes, bicyclists should be required to wear helmets at all ages. Drivers are required to wear seat belts, and motorcyclists have to wear helmets. It helps protect them from injury, and while falling from the bike may not pose a big risk - if a car were to hit them it would.

  • No, cyclists should not be required to wear a helmet.

If you were to ask me if any cyclist IMO should wear a helmet, my response would be a resounding yes! However, should and required to have two distinct and separate meanings. If a person chooses to go without a helmet, then so be it. There is no cure for lack of common sense and certainly no law that will change that.

  • No law for helmets

No it should be up to the individual whether or not they want to wear a helmet. They should not be made to wear a helmet that they may not want or just find uncomfortable. Plus it would be difficult to enforce this rule since most people to not use bikes in areas where police would be able to access easily.
