Should cell phone use be allowed in schools?

Should cell phone use be allowed in schools?
70% Say Yes
30% Say No
  • Yeah, just put them away during class

Its that simple. You can bring a cell phone to school as long as you keep it put away during class so that you dont distract others or use it to cheat, because its only during class when people have a problem with kids having cell phones. During lunch or in between classes, nobody is complaining about cell phone usage.

  • Yeah, sure.

Cell phones could be used for academics*,such as math, reading, social studies, etc. Some people have, a dictionary or a thesaurus on their phone. The phone could also be used for emergencies. If a student needs to tell someone something very badly, they could text that person in class so that they wont have to yell across the room to deliver the message.

  • They Should Be Allowed

While phones SHOULD be prohibited during class time, I see no reason for this also to apply to lunch period. Students aren't doing anything other than eating. It's their break from classes and thus they should be able to do what they want during that time, including the privilege of using their phones.

  • Yes, it should.

Cell phones should be allowed during free time like lunch or recess. Not when a teacher is teaching. Between classes is another time when you could use you phone because it's not bothering anyone nor is it a distraction to anyone. And this is why I say yes to cell phones in school.

  • Yes they should

They should in lunch becasue it would make everyone be quieter and they would stay seated becasue they can just text their friends. Dont you think it would be easier on the lunch moniters!?!? So why does it matter if we use are phones in lunch would it really be that bad i mean who does it effect?!

  • YES, Why Shouldn't We?

Yes Us Students Should be allowed To Have Cell Phones In School, At least Let Use Them In School Not In Class, It Wouldn't Distract Anybody, From Eating. And People Would Probably Be More Quiet & It would BE Easy On The Monitors If We Could Just Bring Our Phones.

  • As long as they are on silent

As long as they are on silent i dont see the problem. Look at all these school shootings and fights.... Now if there were no cell phones who would calll the police? I see it as a security advantage and in todays times they double as a computer, dictionary, calculator, and other very useful resources. As a machinist and mechanical engineer i found my phone and its apps very useful during my schooling and at the job site. As far as not helping the teacher.... Not all schools have a computer lab or atleast not one aval. For use at that time but mostly all students have a smart phone and can use it and its apps as a ref. To reports, history, math, chem, and pretty much every other subject. I find gaged ears, colored hair, and crazy clothes more distracting.

  • I say yes.

Cell phone use should be allowed in school, just not during class. Using it during class would be very disrespectful to the teachers, but in between classes and during lunch and other breaks students should be allowed to use their phones...it isn't affecting anyone and allows them a quick break to check news updates and statuses.

  • Yes, cell phones should be allowed in schools.

Students would have the ability to keep up with weather alerts and have a calculator. Having a cell phone would increase the learning interest in schools. Parents would feel that their child is safe because the student could text their parents. I think cell phones should be allowed in school but only when the teacher allows them. Such as, during lunch hour, free class time, or between classes.

  • With So Many Great Pros To Overrule The Cons, Why Not Have Cell Phones At School?

There are many concerns brought up by allowing cell phones in school. Before I address them, let me show you the pros:
    1. In case of an emergency, such as a situation where a dangerous individual was in the school and a phone could not be reached, students could call for help, increasing their chance of survival. I know a lot of people say that the students will always be able to reach a phone or call for help, but that is not true. I know from personal experience. When I was in Second Grade, a person came in the building and shot the teacher in the room next to us in the leg. She could have been killed. My friend was in there, and like he said, if that individual were to come in the closet where he and his classmates were hiding, they would have been dead. Need I mention the Sandy Hook incident? How many lives do you think could have been saved if someone called for help in time?
    2. Parents can check in on their children and change plans, so at the end of the day there is no confusion, which brings me to my next point;
    3. In the event that a student didn't catch the bus in time or their parents forgot to pick them up, they could call for a ride.
    4. Mobile devices such as phones are a great way to look up information and take notes and email. If the computers are all in use, or there are no computers, a phone would help a lot.
    5. A major problem people see is, "What if my phone goes off in class?". Well, either turn it off or just keep it in your locker/bag. I honestly don't know why people struggle to come up with this idea.
    6. An incentive to students for good behavior (because we all know students have trouble behaving, being one myself) would be being able to get out their phones and play games/listen to music/text each other/etc. Another option would be for them to be able to get their phones out during study hall and such so they are entertained and don't cause disruptions.
    7. Instead of talking to partners and disrupting class, students could text each other.
    8. Most phones can be used as a book as well, so if you want them to be quiet after they are done with their work, but not play games (like the rest of my class), then you (the teachers) wouldn't have to worry about them not having a book and disrupting their fellow classmates.
    9. Having a prized possession that you don't want to lose (such as a phone) is a good way to teach responsibility.

If students fail to follow the rules of having a cell phone at school, they can always be banned. But if students don't get a chance to bring their phones, how will schools know it's a bad thing to have phone?

  • Students should be able to use cell phones at school.

Cell phones should be allowed at school because if some thing goes wrong, we can call our parents. If we get hurt, or if after school we need to we can call for a ride. If your bike goes flat or if we go home early or are in after school programs, we can call our parents and that would be nice.

  • Yes, it would help.

I think cell phones should be allowed in class because cell phones would make all the kids feel safer and that they can use it if they get into trouble or something happens to them. Teachers shouldn't make kids put their cell phones in their lockers because it could get stolen.

  • Mobiles for academics

Students should be able to bring phones to classes. Bringing phones would provide easy access to a wide variety of educational and helpful applications, let pupils contact parents if they have forgotten an assignment or in an emergency, and would allow more money for schools as kids can use their camera phones for movie making, science, IT and many other subjects.
There are so many apps out today for phones, including many educational ones that can assist in learning. Modern technology has advanced for educational purposes and is highly valued in today’s society. With mobiles in class rooms teachers would be able to encompass different styles of teaching and learning with specialty apps suited for the subject. Students will also be able to adapt to their preferred learning style letting them learn easily and swiftly. Therefore learning with phones in classrooms can benefit not only teachers but there students as well.
We all know what to do in an emergency but what afterwards? In that time you would want to talk to your parents and keep them up to date. But what if you don’t have time to grab your phone, what if there is a fire? Or could not use another phone? Using mobiles in classrooms will allow students to have them on hand to take or use in other such emergencies. If not a parent’s peace of mind or a Child's, then what would be a better reason for phones in classes?
With government cut backs on school funding our schools will be struggling with equipment costs, so what better way to allow our government funded schools to relax with money strains then to provide a solution, phones in classes. Mobiles in the class rooms would let schools relax as they would not need to provide cameras, P.A. Systems or student diaries. Students can use their own camera phones and can be sent texts over the wireless network, not to mention the amount of paper saved by using the phones calendars as student diaries. In the best interest of the schools and environmental resources phones are obviously the best solution.
In conclusion mobiles are defiantly the best option. Schools will have more money to spend on more necessary equipment and students will have a better chance at education. Keeping parents up to date has never been more important so with pupils’ phones at school they can be easily contacted. Do you think family and education are important? Well Mobiles in schools is certainly the best way.

  • They are a necessary communication device.

I contend that cell phones are the best and most affordable long-distance communication device on this planet. They're useful for all manner of things, like catching up with your girlfriend from another school during lunch break, texting your over-anxious mother that you're not dead yet, organizing a school ball committee meeting in a hurry, calling the police because a crazy kid has taken a gun to school today and begging your friend because you forgot your pen.

They can do other trivial things that are excruciatingly difficult to do with a calculator, but which a cell phone can handle with ease. It needs to be remembered that cell phones were never designed as learning tools, but that's not to say that they have no place in a learning environment. For kids who don't have them, there is no disadvantage to their education. I was one of my high school's top scholars and yet I had never used or owned a cell phone until I was in my final year.

  • Phone's should be allowed

People who have ADH can record lessons, it is useful in many lessons. In case of an emergency someone can inform another. I someone is having problems/bullied they can send a text to a teacher and that would make it more upfronting and comfortable. It gives varieties of opinions and facts on different topics. Many people say you can use books but it is only from one persons point of view but phone have a variety of point of views!

  • Cell phones are helpful in class and anywhere you are.

Cell phones are the thing that can push our society forward. They can help you during your math class or in science class. In case you have to research something up. It would help that your parents by letting them feel more safe. That we need to start using the tech more because our future is based on technology. That many of our kids are going to have cell phones such as smart phones.

  • They should!!

It should be allowed as long as they are noy interfering with classwork and not a distraction. If everyone was going by the rules that the school set about having them then why cant we have them! A lot of people think that they would be a distraction to the teacher, but its not unless you are talking on the phone durring the class.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes, students need to contact their parents just in case.

Most people say "no" for the phone, because it can disturb others and can be use for cheating. Even if it's "yes", they can call/text. Here in my school, they use phone like I do.
I say yes because students have to have call their parents to pick them up. But I think it's a good idea to let them take their phones to school. If you bring it to school, your phone MUST be turned off, or can turn the volume off, too.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes they should.

With cell phones kids and parents would feel much safer. There are so many shootings and threats that we could just call 911 and have our cell phones in handy. Also, there is a lot of bullying; if we could use cell phones in school there wouldn't be as much worry.

  • Cell phones should be allowed in schools with strict regulation.

Cell phones, like anything else that would interrupt learning, should be
well regulated in schools. Of course, they should not be allowed while students are being educated or when their attention is needed by teachers. During off time or between classes, I see no reason why kids cannot use their phones in school.

    Posted by: MarsBIue
  • yes

they should be allowed because take into consideration 9/11. parents were trying to talk to there children before they died and if cell phones were allowed, the children would be able to talk to there parents one last time before they passed on. also cell phones can be used as calculaters during math

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes to cell phones in schools!

Cell phones in schools are a great help. If you don't know a word, you can look it up on your phone. If you don't have a calculator, you can use your phone. If a shooting or tornado or fire takes place, you can call 911 for help. These are my reasons for cell phones in schools.

  • They Should be Allowed During Lunch and Passing Periods.

Students should be able use their cell phones during school. In class time, during a lesson, cell phones should not be used because it causes distraction, but after lessons are over, a person should be able to decide whether or not to do homework or use their cell phones. Also, Lunch break and passing periods are times with no need to do work, and are free times when people can hang out and chat, or when students should be able to use their phones to contact a friend at home or to contact a family member.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Cell phones are not a distraction, but a useful tool that schools need to adapt to.

For the people that think phones are a distraction, many schools would not allow cell phone use without boundaries. There would need to be a set of rules, such as no phones in the class room unless allowed by teacher. Also, there is a time and place for everything such as lunch, homeroom, before and after school and study hall.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Why should phones be allowed

I think cell phones should be allowed in class let alone school because what if there was and emergency and no one could reach a cellular device. The students could just text their parents saying "hey mom, the school is under a lock-down and I am fine just thought I would text u and tell you I love you just in-case something happens".

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Students should be allowed to use cell phones in school.

If Students were able to use cell phones during free periods I think they would have less of an urge to use them in their more important classes like science or math. Cell phones can only distract you when there is something to distract. During lunch or study hall, what is there to distract them from? There are no tests in lunch or study hall so what are they going to cheat on? Nothing. I think students should be able to use cell phones during free periods but they should be kept away during all other classes.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • YES! Cell phone use is harmless and should be allowed in schools.

I think that cell phones would give kids a break at lunch during school hours. I mean, what is the harm of students using them during a break? It's not going take long for kids to figure out how to sneak them anyways, so why not just let them use them now?

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Cell phone use should be allowed in school because we need them.

If there is an emergency, then we need to contact somebody immediately. If we don't, it could get out of hand. Or, you could be seriously injured with no help. That could be life threatening and very scary to small children. That is why children need to have phones on them at all times!

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Cell phones can be used for education, not just as a distraction

Technology is advancing, and students and staff alike can use that fact to their advantage. A school could launch a cell-phone-based network to hold polls, get digital assignments and tests, and to monitor phone usage like they already monitor computer usage. Cell phones could easily become a tool of education if they are used correctly.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Cell phones should be allowed as long as they are not distracting.

Have the students put their phones on vibrate so they aren't noisy during class time. If the teacher is leading a lesson and the student is actively on their phone, then that student should be asked to put it away until the lesson is over. During down time or their own time to work on homework, it should be their decision if they want to use their phones or not. Phones can be used as dictionaries or calculators, which can be beneficial to students. However, cell phone usage should also be prohibited during tests. Cell phones can be beneficial in emergency situations, such as school shootings, where cell phones are often the first to spread news to outside of campus.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes

Kids should be allowed to have cell phones but put on vibrate, so as not to disturb other kids around them. Phone calls should not be answered but let the call go to voice mail.

  • Cellphones are a part of life and always will be.

They should be allowed to use cellphones during lunch, class breaks and free periods. I also think that if the teacher had games or activities using phones, the kids would pay attention better because they like technology. I also think that they should be able to use them for other things in the class too, like looking up definitions for activities and things like that.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • YES!

The reason why students are rolling behind is because they choose not too. When a real student wants to learn then they would do all the research possible on the subjects. No resource on learning is kept silent. I do not find cell phones distracting because I work well with it on my side. A person chooses whether to let it distract them or not. The phone doesn't have a mind to choose.

  • Yes, they are useful.

It makes the student more focused. Also everybody has one and it's just part of life. C'mon, we live in the 21st century and everyone is using technology, so why not let them use it to remember homework? Or even look something up and even the calculator app. So why not just let them use it?

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Why not?

Cells phones would not be much of a distraction. If anything cell phones could actually help in the classroom. An example would be, lets say you need to use the internet on your phone for classroom discussion. That is helpful. As long as used correctly, why not. I'm a teenage girl, and my school doesn't allow phones right now, but next year they will. I'm so excited.

  • Cellphones are a life source

  • Yes

Even if it's a distraction a million other things we do are too. Cell phones also keep people quieter and more focused. it is also so we could take online testing. It just seems like we never have fun with Tech at school. And what damage does it do, we use them anyways and we never have distraction

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • NO, I DISAGREE.

Because people would pay attention to their cell phones than their learning. They won't pay attention to the teacher. If they pay attention they can get a better future. Can be successful in school. The cell phones can be stolen from them, and no one can replace it for them. That's why i say no.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes it should, students can have apps to support their assignment.

They can get dictionary apps to help them to support whatever the teacher assigned them. It'll be better for the students and also they can keep their phones with them in case of an emergency that might occur. But they cannot be a distraction towards the students. I believe that's why they should have them in school.

  • Yes, cell phone use should be allowed in schools.

Students should be allowed to use cell phones in school. There is no harm in being able to use their phone during down time. These days, being without a phone can be a danger. Even the walk to and from school can be dangerous, and a phone is a safety line. Without it, a student who is lost, hurt, or otherwise in trouble has no immediate way to contact anyone.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • We should be allowed.

Why can't we use our phones when we see teachers use theirs all the time in class and outside of class? Why aren't we allowed to use them if the teachers are already breaking the rules in the first place? If teachers can use their phones, students should be allowed to as well.

  • Cell phones in school

They should be allowed in school because of a emergency, or our parents need to contact use because their was a emergency in our family. They would need to get a hold of us as soon a possible. They can be used for good things like studies and research work.

  • Yes, kids should be allowed to have a cell phone.

A cell phone can protect you from dangerous things. It also can help a child's parents feel more safe because their child can contact them if they need anything. Kids should have a phone when they turn 8 or 10. Also, a lot of kids I know would enjoy having cell phones - they don't have to use it in class, just during lunch periods or passing periods.

  • Yes, cell phones should be allowed at schools.

Cell phones help you and make you smarter and cell phones are awesome and cell phones keep you safe. Like if you were to have gone missing you can act a relative or your parents. Most kids feel more safe with phones and they can contact them with a phone faster.

  • Cell phones should be allowed because they increase a student's productivity.

Cell phones help students in class to look up information. Some teachers even allow them to get them out currently because classes lack computers for every student! When they're not needed for research, they're put back into backpacks or pockets. It makes looking up information both fun and easier! It's what kids today need and want! That is why cell phones earn a big yes from me!

  • Cell phones are a distraction, and they have no business being in schools.

The United States is already lacking far behind in education. Anything that exacerbates that issue is not allowable. Cell phones are a known distraction, especially for children and young adults. If you cannot drive while on a cell phone, then they certainly have no place in schools. Leave them at home, or keep them turned off during school hours.

    Posted by: IgnorantCraig79
  • No, as they cause distractions and more.

From distractions to cheating, cell phones would cause many problems. Distractions in class would cause bad grades. Bad grades would cause failing and failing would cause dreadful results on the final test. The final test is the foundation of a house and failing would cause being held back. Being held back would involve repeating the grade or worse, summer school, and the more you're held back the more likely it is you'll drop out.
A Cell phone could be used for texting or maybe cheating too. You don't need it for emergency purposes. You don't need it for "educational purposes", we have books, computers, and calculators for a reason. Overall it's just asking for problems already, so many have already been caught with them.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Of course not.

I don't quite see why you would allow students to use phones in school. They're a distraction, don't benefit the students, don't benefit the teachers, and they have no place. Leave them in your locker.

  • No. What's the gain?

Having cell phones in class means that the students will not pay attention to what is being taught, meaning that the test scores will go down, because the students will not have learned the information needed to understand and answer the questions correctly. Then, the students likely-hood to have the ability to go to college and become successful in the real world. Basic cause and effect.

  • Students shouldn't have cell phones

I don't think any student should have the ability to be able to use cell phones in school because they can cause distractions. A couple ways cell phones may cause distractions is people can play games on the phone, watch videos, and make phone calls. Over 87% of people play games and watch videos during school hours.
Other reasons people shouldn't be allowed to have cell phones in school is because people can text each other for answers on a quiz or on a test. 73% of students have been caught cheating on a test with a cell phone.
Some more reasons I think people shouldn't have cell phones in school is because they can harass each other and cyber bully one another. A percentage of 53% of students bully one another with cell phone. Some students can decide can decide to make a call to their friends to call in a bomb. Only 15% percent of students have called in a bomb each year. Students may also make threats to other people by texting them or calling them. Rumors can be spread with cell phones by texting and calling someone.
The final thing you can do with cell phones is invade peoples privacy by recording and taking pictures of what people are doing. Just 20% of students have been caught recording people and taking pictures of people in the bathroom.
To sum it up, students shouldn't have cell phones in school because they cause distractions, you can cheat on a test, you can cyber bully one another, and you can invade one another's privacy.

  • Kids shouldn't have cell phones in school because they're distracting.

Kids shouldn't be allowed to carry cell phones in school because they can't resist the urge to use their phones to text each other, listen to music and watch videos online. Basically, kids should focus more on their studies than they do on texting or emailing their friends at school.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Getting stolen, cheating, vulgar usage

*Here's a good one--there have been cases where kids took nasty pictures of other kids undressing in the locker room and then posted them on myspace or youtube or something.

*Liability to the school in case of theft. This actually happened to my daughter---she knew she wasn't supposed to have her phone @ school, but had a dance afterward & was planning on going home w/a friend after that, so she turned it off & took it so she could call me to pick her up later. She left it in her backpack outside the dance & it got stolen, but since she wasn't even supposed to have it she couldn't report it to the school or anything. It's just one more thing for schools to have to help irresponsible kids keep up with that they shouldn't have to fool with.

*When you talk about cheating, be sure to mention that they can use a camera phone to take pictures of the test (or study notes from home) and use that to sell the test to another period or cheat. They also text message each other to get answers.

  • Yes

we use them anyway and we are never distracted. Besides, who cares about what we do. we're all quieter when we're texting an we can use phones to take online tests. It seems like the school district just doesn't want us to have lives and be social. And with how much we learn from texting we could all do with a little more sociability.

  • No, it is bad.

The reason for this is because cell phones take away from the students' learning. School students need to stay focused in school and learn what the teacher is teaching so the student can learn and be successful in school and in every thing they do. I am still strongly against cell phones in the school classrooms.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • No, because overall they're a distraction and other problems.

Cell phones can be stolen, increasing the crime rate. You can also cheat using the cell phones. It's another reason for us kids to be bullied, just for not having a cell phone. It's also a huge distraction not just for the person using it, but also sometimes for the people around you. No, I don't think cell phones should be used in class, but at school I don't see why not. Most certainly not in class while we are all trying to learn so we can do something with our lives.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • A Major Distraction

There are many reasons that we should not have phones in school. Some may say "What if there is an emergency and I need to call a parent?" That could and can be handled by the school. Also, if you have a phone during class you could end up cheating on tests and homework. They are also a major distraction in many ways.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Shouldn't be allowed

They're a distraction to kids and they might use it for inappropriate sites! Kids will play games instead of doing work. Then they will just ignore what your saying, and when they need answers they might text their friends the answers. And might record bad videos at recess or in class. That's why I think smartphones and electronics should not be allowed in school.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • No they shouldn't.

I don't see how they can be allowed in school. If you think they just need to be silenced, ah heck yeah you're wrong. Do you really think students just leave their cell phone in pocket and pay attention? That's is just a total excuse. And fight? I could bet with you no student will call the police. If you're still in high school now, you can see that if there's a fight happening, the kids just laugh, take pictures, and video tape it.

  • Cell phone use should not be allowed in schools.

Cell phones are a huge distraction in school. Using them during school would cause students to receive lower grades because they wouldn't be paying attention. I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed in school, they just shouldn't be used during school hours. What are they needed for? During a school day you shouldn't be sending messages in class, you should be learning. They can wait for the school day to end to use their phone, it isn't a big deal. If there is an emergency, they can use the school phones, that is one of the reasons schools have their own phones. Cell phones shouldn't be used during school.

    Posted by: ViolentKurt59
  • No. How is it going to keep you focused on your work?

They are big distraction. Some rude messages can be sent and no one will know. It can be used to cheat on tests because you can look up answers. People without cell phones can feel left out. If you are texting, you're not learning. If you're not learning, why are you at school?

Cyber bulling is a big problem most children don't want to go to school because of bulling with cell phones the would be another reason not to go to school. Also children need to be more social. Teachers could also be distracting to the teacher and other students. Also the student using the cell phone would be distracted with music and other things on the cell phone. Say NO!

  • imabench is WRONG

Imabench said above that they should be aloud as long as people don't use them, but thats the thing you can't stop people from using them. I go to a small middle school only 50 people are in it and yet about 50% of the students use them to take inappropriate photos texting other people cheating on tests etc.

  • No, it's just absurd.

I believe cell phones shouldn't be allowed in school. One reason I think this is because students would cheat. For example, in the middle of a test two students could be texting each other answers to the test. Second, students would easily get distracted. For example, a student forgets to put his phone on vibrate and the phone rings in the middle of class. The whole class would get distracted from that ring.

  • Students should not be able to use cell phones in school.

If cell phones are allowed in schools, it will distract students from learning. If we allow children to use a cell phone during class, students will play a game or chat with other students instead of studying. So later they will not know what they should have learned at school. Also, it is very bad for their health, as it can decrease their eyesight or even give them cancer.

  • No, it is bad.

The reason for this is because cell phones take away from the students' learning. School students need to stay focused in school and learn what the teacher is teaching so the student can learn and be successful in school and in every thing they do. I am still strongly against cell phones in the school classrooms.

  • They won't pay attention

They will use their cell phone's more than do their work. Will be using it all the times in class. Won't do work. Also, they won't have good grades cause they don't do anything but just be on their phone the whole day. That is my reason why cell phone's are bad for school.
