Should English be the official language of the U.S.?

  • Yes

I thought it was the official language. In the case of immigrants not knowing English and as cotteer03 said "Due to this immigration, secondary languages, such as Spanish, are now being required. That is downright ridiculous. If people come to the US, they should learn our language; not us learn theres." I agree. But, we could help the immigrants learn English. When they come here, give them a free English class. It would help both sides. We won't have to be required to learn Spanish (although it's not terrible, it's nice to learn anyways) and the immigrants can get better jobs and communicate better

  • Yes.

The United States is having a growing problem when it comes to immigration. Due to this immigration, secondary languages, such as Spanish, are now being required. That is downright ridiculous. If people come to the US, they should learn our language; not us learn theres. Therefore, I believe English should be the official and the only required language in the US.

  • America has always been land of the free and home of the brave

but it seems to me like some people take advantage of it. I think that learning English is very important. I worked a summer with some people who didn't speak English at all, and felt very out of place in my own country. If I moved to another country, I would learn their language, so I think it's not too much to ask for everyone who lives here to learn ours.

  • English should be the official language of the US

I live in Florida and there are parts that I cannot even communicate with people. The immigrants tend to stay in their "own" area, however, they correspond with English speaking people enough to have to speak our language. Why would they come to the United States and think they do not have to learn our language?

  • English should be the official language of the U.S.

English should be the official language of the U.S. It is currently the predominant language in the world, in terms of how widespread it has become, and its use in a majority of the worldwide forums, councils, and political meetings. Besides it being so widespread, English is already almost entirely set into U.S. culture and history as the 'official' language. There is no reason for that to change.

  • English should be the offical language of the USA.

America is founded on and governed by the English Language. In the past, immigrants to America would learn English as a second language. But nowadays, immigrants to America EXPECT Americans to know THEIR language, but we don't. Immigrants, especially Mexicans (No offence) today aren't merging with American Culture but instead making their own. I have once went to a McDonalds in a Mexican community and ordered my food. The cashiers response( In Spanish),"Sorry I can not understand you as you did not speak Spanish". America is being separated by a language barrier, and the answer isn't for Americans to learn, Spanish, French, and Chinese, its for immigrants to learn English

  • English should be the official US language

There are no other nations that change their culture to make assimilation easier for immigrants. If we visit another country, we must learn at least a minimal amount of their language in order to communicate. Retaining English as the official US language retains a cohesive culture. However, I do think that it would benefit our nation if we train our children to speak multiple languages as other countries do.

  • English represents America

Although, we should provide language assimilation to immigrants to prepare them for life in the U.S., we also can focus on becoming a more bi-lingual society. However, there are so many nationalities represented in the U.S., it would be wise to have one language as the national language and retain the heritage this country was established with. Our nation has always been a melting pot, but there needs to be a cohesiveness represented by one national language.

  • Yes, because we were founded by Englishmen.

Our country was founded by the English and what they spoke was English. The only argument against this is it's not fair to immigrants. Well, everyone else learned English, and now when a few immigrants come over and don't want to speak it, then they can go back to their country. This is America and we shall speak English.

  • New World's Language must be World's New Language. French(Latinic) or English(Germanic) which one is fit to be GLOBAL LANGUAGE like Latin alphabeth.

4.French is the most spoken second language in Canada.
5.French easier to learn and use than English.
6.Spanish, Portoguese and ─░talian languages easier to learn and use for French speakers because all of those are members of latinic language family, instead English, Dutch and German languages those are germanic languages.
7.All Americas would be one in language family.
8.Worst side is English words aren't fit to Latin alphabeth, it makes hard to teach to the World as global language.
9.US has revolted for liberalism like France.
10.US and Canada are multiracial and multicultural countries not only british race and culture. Because those are global countries not vassals of UK.
11.If US and Canada convert French, Cosmopolitan and Metropolitan Americas would be more powerful and more important countries in whole World. Also French becomes first most spoken and most valuable GLOBAL LANGUAGE.

  • New World's Language must be World's New Language. Spanish(Latinic) or English(Germanic) which one is fit to be GLOBAL LANGUAGE as Latin alphabeth.

1.US is the third Brazil is the fifth most crowded country in the World.
2.Except US, Canada and Brazil, all americans countries use Latin alphabeth and Spanish that member of Latinic language family.

  • The US should be open.

We should never set an official language and we should make it as easy as possible for people of different linguistic backgrounds to live and work successfully in this country. We have no language that has ever been unique to this country and until that happens, which it may never we can't choose one language over others.

  • Tolerance and Freedom of Expression for All

English is the primary language of America, and is not threatened in any way into becoming a second language. The US is the land of freedom and opportunity, we should not be so arrogant as to mandate our culture to those who come where to visit or to stay. We are a land of immigrants, who celebrate and appreciate people of all diversities and backgrounds.

  • English is the unofficial official language of the U.S.

There is no need to make English the official language of the U.S. Already 82.1% of Americans are fluent and 96% are proficient in English. The fact of the matter is that changing the official language to English would do little to no good, but would make us look ignorant as a nation that has prided itself on being a melting pot for generations and was built on the hard work and determination of many immigrants, not including the original Englishmen who came over here as immigrants as well.

  • Check Your Privilege.

First of all, I agree with every single word of the only other comment besides myself. Secondly, all of the comments preaching "we have to make them learn English because we all know English", what is so frightening about learning a second language? You expect people moving here to learn a second, maybe third language, yet you don't want to be bothered to learn more than one. We're punishing people who are immigrating to America for "Freedom", because they can't speak English? Newsflash: English is literally one of the hardest languages in the world to learn. It's easier for children in American schools to learn Spanish that it would be for other people to learn English.

  • The U.S should not have an official language at all

America has always been a country that welcomes immigrants to come here and become productive members of our society. Many immigrants come here to do better for their families and themselves. In fact, every so called "American" has family that comes from countries outside the U.S. Unless you are Native American, you are either European, Hispanic, or Asain. In all honesty, if we were to have an official language, it should be Native American language because they are the ones who were here before any of us.
