  • It should be illegal to burn the American flag.

If you burn an American flag I hope somebody deals with you. In the United States if you burn the flag it's treason to me. You're saying to the countless men and women who fight for that flag that you don't care. Go somewhere else if you want to do that. Not here. They need to put all these protestors who do this stuff in jail. You were given rights to speech and protest, but don't disrespect our flag.

  • Though Disrespectful, Shouldn't be Illegal

America is a place of liberty and freedom. What would America be if we were not allowed to express our differences? The First Amendment supports the act of burning a flag and though it is not a spoken act, it is a symbolic statement. Many have the right to believe that burning the flag is a disrespectful act, but that should not result in legal determinations.

  • What we fail to realize

We are burning the very thing that represents our nation and therefore all of the freedoms which fall under it including the right to free speech. You burn the flag because you are allowed to but if it wasn't for our flag and what it stands for then you can forget celebrating your freedoms. Our enemies would love to get their hands on our flag and burn it. Humor me for a second, can you tell me what's the difference between a protestor who burns the flag and a combatant who chooses to burn our flag? I'll give you a clue there is none. Go ahead and burn our sacred flag and see where that gets you in life.

  • Respect cannot be legislated.

The despicable act of flag burning cannot be legislated and one could argue our right to free speech protects such acts. Laws against flag burning would be impossible to enforce, for one thing, and very expensive to attempt to enforce. How would you determine exactly what a flag is? In reality a flag is but a symbol constructed of cloth and color. If flag burning is against the law a protester could just as easily wave around a red, white, and blue bandanna then set fire to it and the impact would be similar. Who is there to count the stars and strips to determine whether it constitutes a flag or not?

  • No, freedom of speech must be honored

While many (including myself) find the practice a relatively disgusting one, it cannot be outlawed on those grounds and those alone. People are supposed to be able to express disapproval with this country if they feel a reason to do so, as long as it isn't endangering or harming anybody. Flag burning is a form of expression and nothing beyond that, while it's unappealing to many it should be allowed.
