There have recently been international food crises that had nothing to do with actual food production, but rather they were due to speculation on commodity futures markets by large investment banks. Such practices should be regulated, such that the free market can ACCURATELY determine what the price of food should be based on what can be produced and what people are willing to pay; speculation distorts the market.
Food is an essential commodity that is necessary for everyone. To take it one step further, healthy food is a human necessity. To have an essential commodity at the mercy of the free market doe not seem just. We should subsidize healthy food to keep prices low and availability to everyone.
