Should government reform Social Security so that wealthier people pay taxes on every dollar of their incomes?

  • Yes, The wealthy should pay their share.

Certainly, many wealthy people succeeded through hard work, discipline, and original
thought, but they benefited from the security, opportunities, and
infrastructure provided by the broader American community and supported
by the funds of all taxpayers, rich and poor. Asking the wealthy to give
back to their country in proportion to their success is only fair.

  • That's how it's supposed to work.

If we are going to make Social Security available to all income earners in the United States, we need to do so in an equitable way. Someone who makes more should pay more into the system. We wouldn't seriously expect them to get by on the pension of some mid-level clerical worker, would we?

  • The wealthy should pay their share.

Wealthy Americans did not succeed in a vacuum. Certainly, many wealthy people succeeded through hard work, discipline, and original thought, but they benefited from the security, opportunities, and infrastructure provided by the broader American community and supported by the funds of all taxpayers, rich and poor. Asking the wealthy to give back to their country in proportion to their success is only fair.

  • Yes, They should.

I often hear of wealthy people who get paid more that 150k per year talking about how their paycheck goes up when they get paid over a certain amount. The social security system is very precarious and on the edge of bankruptcy. People who earned low wages get paid hardly anything and they should get paid more with those taxes.

  • The government should reform social security so that, like 401Ks, individuals can decide how much to contribute.

Social Security should be reformed to resemble 401Ks so that individuals can decide how much they want to have available when they retire and contribute based on that amount. Likewise, the amount that is withdrawn should be based on the amount accumulated as a result of those contributions. This would insure that everyone pays and withdraws what they consider to be a fair amount.
