Should Guantanamo prisoners on hunger strikes be forcefed?

  • Their kept alive for a reason

Although I don't agree with Guantamino at all, if you're going to operate it for the sake of gathering intelligence, letting your source of said intelligence die, be gone forever wouldn't really be in your best interest, now would it? The fact is, we DO kill terrorists in the middle east all of the time. The reason we imprison them is so that we can gather intelligence.

  • They all should be sent back to their respective countries.

They should all be sent back to their respective countries were most of them would be put to death or thrown into much worse prisons than Guantanamo. These folks were enemy combatants, and should have been shot by a military firing squad while in the Middle East.

The USA is to easy on enemy combatants.

  • No, not in most cases.

It is their choice whether or not to eat and they should not be forced fed. It saves on the cost of a meal, if nothing else. The counter point to this is the medical care they will require when they eventually pass out from dehydration and malnutrition. If they reach that point, they should be IV fed.

  • No, Guantanamo prisoners on hunger strike should not be forcefed.

If the prisoners at Guantanamo wish to starve themselves, let them, even to the point of death. While they are imprisoned and being interrogated, what they do on their own time in their cells is part of their personal autonomy. It does not interfere with the government's ability to interrogate them. If they die during routine interrogations because they went on hunger strike it is their own fault and should not be viewed as the government's responsibility.

  • When compared to Anorexia...

It could be argued that the prisoners at Guantanamo are under the duty of care of the US government, thus invoking the same procedures that say, someone suffering from anorexia would undergo in a US hospital. There is however, a great difference between nutrition delivered via IV drip and a plastic tube inserted into the throat.

  • They should not.

America should not try to keep these miserable terrorists alive. Come on, we should have killed them before even thinking about throwing them in a prison. If they want to kill themselves, let them. I personally believe that we should just kill them. It is better than feeding them, housing them, and clothing them. This is especially true if we cook them food and they waste it.
