Should gun owners be held criminally liable when their guns are used by others in accidents?

  • There is a responsibility to lock and protect your equipment

Absolutely. To be a licensed gun owner, you are essentially putting a firearm in your name. If you do that, then you are responsible if someone that is not licensed to that firearm uses it. If you let someone else drive your car, you're responsible. That goes for any other property. Why should a firearm be any different?

  • Yes, in some cases.

If you can't be responsible for your own gun, you shouldn't have one. If you don't take all of the necessary precautions with your gun and it results in someone else using it on accident, you should at the very least have your guns taken away from you. Depending on the situation, you should also face criminal charges. Guns are very dangerous. When you buy a gun, you should accept that responsibility.

Yes, gun owners should be criminally liable when their guns are used by others in accidents because they are the owners and should protect the firearm from falling into the wrong hands. Gun violence is a major problem in the United States and more needs to be done by the government to make sure that more people are held accountable.

  • Yes they should be

Gun owners who are the licenced holders of guns should be responsible for the safe keeping of their guns. The gun should be securely placed beyond the reach of children or any one else other than the gun owner. Negligence in this area could cause dangerous effects. Hence gun owners should be held criminally liable when their guns are used by others in accidents.

  • No way !!!

That's no different than saying that someone should be held responsible if someone steals their car, then runs a red light and kills someone. Now, if someone left their gun in their unlocked car, you'd have a point. But as long as reasonable precautions are taken to secure their gun, they should not be held liable. Having said that, you cannot prevent someone from stealing your gun, if they are determined and skilled enough to do so. It's as easy as sneaking up on someone and hitting them in the head with a pipe. The only way to curb gun violence is to have tougher sentences for criminals. Most violent crime is from repeat offenders. Pass a law that any crime committed with a gun automatically gets the death penalty, and watch the crime rate drop like a rock.
