  • You don't need them.

Guns should be made illegal to civilians. They should because it would be a safer world, animals would not be hunted as much and the yearly death rate would decrease. It would be a safer world because terrorists would not be such of a big threat because they would not be able to buy guns as easily. The second point guns should be made illegal is because people are poaching animals with guns. You can’t exactly just kill a tiger or elephant with a knife, but a gun you can. Humans are the main reason animals are getting extinct. If you hunt too many of one species then its prey will over populate, causing wild life problems. It would ruin the ecosystem causing a domino effect of problems. The last reason guns should be illegal to civilians is because then the death rate would decrease drastically. The only reason to have a gun is to hunt or to kill humans. There is no reason you should have a gun to protect yourself, that’s why we have the police. Only the government should have guns. If guns are made illegal then it would be a safer place to live, animal species would not become as extinct or endangered and the yearly death rate would decrease significantly.

  • Yes, I agree that gun should be illegal.

The United States of America should protect people. Britain, which has a handgun ban, had 41 gun deaths last year, and the US had 10,000. Britain is a fifth of the size of the US, but even when the numbers are adjusted, their crime-rate is still vastly below the US amount. Plus, there are a lot of big problems that are created with handguns. Also, people can only kill with guns.

  • Guns kill people!

The argument that guns protect people is absurd. Guns only protect against other guns by deliberately harming another person, often fatally. The only purpose of guns is to kill, which is why they cannot be weighed against knives or wrenches. You cannot argue that these items kill people too because their purpose is not murder. In addition, countries with more gun control have shown a lower crime rate. The Harvard Injury Control Research Center assessed the literature on guns and homicide and found that there’s substantial evidence that indicates more guns means more murders. Legalization can also cause more domestic violence, gun trafficking, and suicide. If we truly value life above all else as a society, guns should be banned, except for law control.

  • Guns should be illegal.

Guns should be illegal because the only real thing they are doing lately is killing fellow citizens. If no one has guns then you won't need to protect yourself against one (with a gun)! Handguns especially are killing a lot of people. If guns stay legal then we are going to have a lot more stories on the news about people getting killed with guns. If guns become illegal then I would think everyone would feel a lot safer knowing that a bullet will not hit you at any given time.

  • Guns kill innocent citizens.

Over 32 people get murdered a day by a gun (any type). The people that get murdered are innocent and have done nothing wrong but lived as a USA citizen. Guns even kill children, like from Sandy Hook Elementary. Also, even in a movie theater, 20 people got shot (The Dark Knight). Those people/children were all innocent, as you can see.

  • Guns harm the public

Even if the common arguement is true, one can defend oneself using a gun, most common people cannot bring out a gun to stop the attack. If all guns were outlawed, no one would have to stop violence with more violence. Guns need to be outlawed. This is why I'm a democrat and a fan of the gun reforms Obama is pushing.

  • This is freakin why:

Because people die of em everyday! There are always people out there that dont take care of the weapons they have and it never ends up good! There are people out there that just go nuts for no dang reason and go out and kill innocent people... And thats why.

  • Yes, guns should be illegal.

The United States of America should protect people. Britain, which has a handgun ban, had 41 gun deaths last year, the US had 10,000, Britain is a fifth of the size of the US, 41 times 5 is 201, still vastly below the US amount. Plus, there are a lot of big problems that are created with handguns. Also, people can only kill with guns.

  • Guns are only used for killing.

The only situation guns have helped in society is when somebody else has guns right? Wrong. There hasn't been a mass shooting stopped by an armed civilian in 30 years. There is a higher chance of somebody getting killed if you get in an argument with an armed civilian too.

  • Yeah, let's make guns illegal! It certainly worked with meth and crack!

Let me get this straight, you want to keep the average law-abiding citizen from owning a gun, when any criminal could get one on the black market. Drugs have been illegal for a while too, and that stopped no one from getting them somehow. So you want only criminals to be able to own guns? Sorry, that makes no sense.

  • Guns Are Okay for Reasonable Use Only.

Guns should be allowed for people who actually are capable of handling a gun. People who have some disorder shouldn't have the right to purchase a gun (school shootings). It's unreasonable to have guns that are, and only should be, used in war. It's not reasonable to have a automatic shotgun or whatever they are called.
We Americans are allowed to have guns because it is written in the constitution by our founding fathers. We need guns to protect ourselves; you never know when danger could walk through the door.

  • Tyranny will result.

Listen, people, we have the right to bear arms. Not for hunting, not for self-defense, but for the preservation of the American way of life and the prevention of tyranny . Benjamin Franklin once said that, "Liberty Is nothing without the means to defend it." IT is our duty as citizens of the United States to overthrow our government in the event that it becomes oppressive. To all those opponents of legal firearm possession, I ask you: how are we to accomplish this feat that is not only our right but our sacred obligation? It is for these reasons that the citizens of this nature should be allowed to own fully automatic weapons. The framers did not place limitations, they said bear arms. They did not specify, it means all, ALL ARMS!!!

  • No guns should not be illegal...

The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Guns are not the problem, the people are the problem, the way the people use the guns. But if guns are taken away then all we lose is the ability to protect ourselves and others, instead of trying to stop the gun we should stop the person with the gun.

  • No, taking away the right to have guns and bear arms is not the cure for the recent mass shootings.

The topic of gun control is almost expected after all the recent mass shootings, especially the tragedy with the children in Newtown. What advocates of gun control must realize is that making guns illegal only makes the situation worse. Those crazy enough to commit these crimes will still have access to the arsenal necessary to kill innocent people, while people who want guns to protect and defend themselves will only have a more difficult time.

  • Should handguns be illegal?

No, our second amendment rights should never be taken away, in any form. As a hunter, I depend on my rifle for food. I keep my handgun for self defense ONLY. In a drought stricken area, rabid animals abound. Then there are the poisonous snakes - I would be defenseless. As a woman, alone, I value my handgun rights.

  • Guns have never killed, it is the man/woman behind the gun

As i read statements from both parties. There is numerous flaws to the argument, guns have never been known to kill anyone. I have left a gun on my porch with rounds sitting right next to it but, to my surprise people still walked on the sidewalk, they still stopped at the stop sign and kids still played in the street, no one was killed, there were many oppurtunities for it but the gun never killed, so I am convinced that my gun is either defective or it doesn't kill. In Britain people have said that they outlawed guns and they did in the 90s however, within the following 10 years murder/ violent crime multiplied 5x.

  • Sure...Taking away guns is DEFINITELY the solution!

I think it is ridiculous that the government wants to outlaw guns! The government doesn’t understand how important it is for citizens to own guns. I have three good reasons for citizens to own guns. One, defending the public and yourself. If you’re out and someone comes in a restaurant with a gun, you can shoot him and keep others from being killed (Plus, you need a concealed weapons permit to carry guns with you in public, so only responsible people have the privilege of a self defense weapon). Number two, home defense. If someone tries to steal something or trespasses in your home, you can shoot them so they can’t steal from you or harm your family. Three, we have the right to own guns says the second amendment. The government should not have the right to overthrow the constitution.

  • I believe that we have the right to keep and bear arms for defense against foreign invaders, criminals, and a rogue government.

Many argue that there isn't a need for a militia anymore. I believe that it is ludicrous to believe that our military is invincible. I also believe that one should be able to defend his life from criminals attempting to hurt or kill him. Finally, I believe that the government today is at the point of no return. Our government is getting too big and is in the beginnings of taking away rights in order to have more control over the nation. Once the federals push too far, a revolution will happen, successful or not. I plan on fighting in it as a zealous patriot.

  • Guns are important for liberty, safety, an much more.

The reason we have the second amendment is to avoid tyranny. Would the holocaust have happened if the Jews had guns? Would Stalin have murdered millions if his civilians have guns. As long as the populace is armed the government is kept in check. Every one of the people on here that says only the government should have guns is missing a crucial fact. That governments have killed the most people with guns throughout history. If normal civilians can't get guns, it just makes it easier for criminals to obtain guns, because making pot, cocaine, etc. Illegal it obviously got harder to get them(sarcasm). It only made the black market on these items bigger, and more profitable. It's not the gun that's dangerous (If its built to standards anyway), but its the person with the gun, whether they be a law abiding, but unsafe citizen, or a criminal. I see that Britain is used as an example, but lets not forget that almost every aspect of their economy, government, and society is worse than ours here in the U.S.(The NHS comes to mind). Not to mention that although they have a democracy, the people do not have much liberty, and they dwell under a nanny-state government.

The level of ignorance of those voting "no" is incredible. The founders of this country included the right to bear arms under a vastly different set of circumstances than we live in now. The revolution is over. Bottom line is guns kill innocent people. Those victims had more of a right to live than the shooter had a right to bear arms; forget the Constitution, natural laws and common sense should prevail. Our lawmakers would abolish guns if they could vote anonymously; they should forget about political contributions and re-election and do the right thing. To the hunters of the world: pick up a bow and arrow and give the game a fighting chance.

You seriously want hunters to use a bow and arrow? Guns are far more humane that a bow. That is why some rounds are illegal to use against certain animals as they will not kill in the first hit. It can take several arrows to take down a deer which is not humane and very painful.
