Should it be illegal for people to marry their relatives?

Asked by: alivia
  • Incest and children with mentally flawed disorders

I'll start my argument with a study of Czechoslovakian children whose fathers were first degree relatives. Fewer than half of the children who were the product of incestuous unions were completely healthy. Forty-two percent of them were born with severe birth defects or suffered early death and another 11 percent were mildly mentally impaired. This study is particularly instructive as it included a unique control group — the offspring of the same mothers but whose fathers were not the mothers’ relatives. When the same women were impregnated by a non-relative, only 7 percent of their children were born with a birth

Secondly you would have to be a moron to legalize this. YES GAY MARRIAGE IS OK! But this is just wrong if the couple is planning on having children, After all this is why the kings and queens died off.

  • The (Nearly) Universal Taboo

Incest is overall horrible for the human population in general.
Yes its a "free country" but lets not ruin the human population more than it is with millions of birth defects.
    Here is a scientific study

  • Yes, it should.

It should be very muchly illegal because if it weren't illegal and stuff then we would have, like, mutant children and stuff and that would be bad for society and bad for the parents of the child. And if your sibling looks like you, it would be VERY egotistical to be attracted to them.

  • Yea. It's not fair on the children

Natures engineers our instincts so that we don't inbreeding and for good reason. Inbreeding can cause lot's of genetics deficits. I'm not bothered about the taboo, just I don't think it's fair to have children that will have to go through bullying, genetics deficits and cultural scorning simply because you was selfish enough to have sex with your sister.

  • The government should not have the right to keep any two consenting adults apart.

What right does the government have to stop love? Each recent generation has seen great strides in civil liberties for consenting lovers. Interracial marriage was once illegal, that wall came down. Now gay marriage is finally being allowed. Why should a government be able to tell it's citizens who they can love? Regarding the birth defects comments, it has been shown that the risk is very minimal. The risk goes up if we are talking about multi-generational breeding (which I disagree with).

  • It's MARRIAGE not REPRODUCTION.

As Alivia stated, the moot is "Should it be illegal for people to marry their relatives?" not "Should it be illegal for people to reproduce with their relatives?"
When she states 'relatives' she doesn't state close or distant. Relatives aren't always blood related (examples: adopted cousins etc.) so what is the harm? And even if they were blood related, it's marriage -- not reproduction. We live in a world where it is legal for a man to have sex with a horse but it is not legal for two humans to agree to a consensual marriage in which there is no harm?
And what IF they were to have children one day? There are many ways to start a family, not just through sex. What happened if it were two male relatives that were married? And if it's the child's safety that's your best concern, as I stated before, there are many ways to create a family. Through adoption, a surrogate etc. Why stop this couple from having a family when there are no health dangers for the child? Or even two women, how would they conceive a child that were to be born with defects? They cannot. And not all married people want to have children, always keep your mind open. Just because you're getting married - it doesn't mean you're obligated to have children.
How is loving someone and wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone, illegal, but having sex with a horse..Isn't?

  • Such interference is pointless

Just like the statement above, it is absolutely unnecessary to forbid love of any kind. Sure there are defects and abnormalities that may propagate or stem from incestuous relationships, but clearly nothing positive is gained from keeping (consenting) lovers apart, be they related to each other or not. Let everyone marry anyone they want, as long as consent and agreement is involved.

  • People should be entitled to marry whoever, providing both parties consent.

Love is love regardless of race, gender, sir name etc. If both parties consent to the marriage then I see no issue with it. Yes you are already related but you don't chose your family, remember. I see no gain in laws disallowing marriage between two relatives, what would the country gain from that, other than the social perception that marriage within the family is 'wrong'?
