Should Japanese reclaim Sakhalin and Kuril from Russia?

Asked by: General-Z
  • Sakhalin should be Japanese!

Russia is more than big enough already. Japan has almost as many citizens as Russia, but compressd on a much, much smaller area. Sakhalin is a natural extension of Japan's current main islands, Japan has historical claims on Sakhalin, Japan needs Sakhalin much more than Russia, and Japan would have developed Sakhalin much better than Russia is able or willing to do.

  • Sakhalin shoud be Japanese!

  • Yes they should

First of all, Japan is far more developed country than eastern Russia and Sakhalin is closer to Tokyo than Moscow. Second, Japan is much more densely populated than Russia so i t would be reasonable for Japan to expand its borders northward. After all, if Russia can claim Crimea, why can't Japan claim Sakhalin and Kuril?

  • Might makes right.

It is right of conquest from the Second World War, when the Russian army crushed the Japanese army. If the Japanese think they want it back, they should invade and get revenge. Until then, Russia sits atop that totem pole, and it should be a reminder of how being a powerful country is good for protecting your sovereign soil.

  • Take a Guess:

Visit the above site a comparison between Japan and Russia's Military capability's. Russia was able to claim the Crimea simply because the rest of the world did not expect it to happen and didn't have any plans in place to stop it.

That and nobody wanted to start WW3 for Crimea.

Even if Japan somehow managed to occupy/get troops on Sakhalin or Kuril, they would face global condemnation, There are already people living their Japan can't just claim it and colonize those lands. That and Russia would not let them keep them, they would force Japan to leave either diplomatically or with military forces.

The risk of WW3 would get the UN and USA involved and I would fully expect them to make Japan withdraw, with the very simple threat of letting them fight Russia(possibly China too) alone.

The only way I see Japan getting Sakhalin and Kuril from Russia is if: Russia has economic trouble and agrees to sell the territory to Japan, which is not very likely with Russia's vast reserves of natural resources.

  • First off, Japan isn't capable of reclaiming it.

According to article nine, Japan doesn't have a standing military. Sure Japan could "technically" say their borders are extended but they will have no influence in that region. 2nd, what could Japan possibly want with Sakhalin or Kuril besides strategic points they can't use? 3rd, Japan will probably be highly criticized. (This is due to the Japanese Empire influence in the past. )
