Should kids under the age of 14 be able to get jobs?

Asked by: Tim1214
  • Depends on the job.

Of course your not going to have them work with machinery or other such hazards but I don't see an issue with young kids raking leaves or any other such jobs. Granted, one of the benefits to a job is the pay but it also helps in many other ways such as responsibility, builds self-esteem, involvement in the community and application of math skills.

  • With support from governments!

Children should be able to work, because the government helps them. Dangerous jobs are banned from even 18 year old, and so is a 10 hour+ working time. Children working is not something we take from children, it`s something we give. As long as the child wants this, it`s a win-win! It can even help the ecomony, give unions power, and give children unique skills! Also, children can get money. Ever saw how happy children get with money?

  • Children Need Experience

Yes because children should be able to be more responsible. Children these days barely take any responsibility. With a right comes responsibilities, right. It will also be a great once in a lifetime experience. They need to learn and use that knowledge for the remainings of their life. You never know how much effect it could give that child.

  • Kids need jobs.

The reason behind this is that they need to prepare for the futures when they get to the point when they need the money to survive in the real world .If they do not get the practice they will get broke become homeless and die out there.Nobody is with them to to show the kids that are now adults.

  • That's just bad....

Kids should be more relaxed and not frustrated from work. That will make kids stressed. Stress can lead to suicide. Do you want a lot of kids dead? Working can make them worried. There is a reason why parents exists in the world. Working is something for adults. Hopefully you agree with me! =D

  • Children need to develop first

There's already a problem hiring teens these days, specifically high school students, because they are not dependable. Most of the time during they may have to choose school over work in order to maintain good grades. Students under 14 should be putting education first to even fully develop academically. The way that society works today, you need to put education first as you prepare for the real world. Technically our brain doesn't even develop fully until the age of 25!

As far as experience goes, children can gain experience through any activity in life, especially through interacting at school. Kids need familiarity to feel comfortable, not just to be thrown into an environment with the general public.

All of this can cause children to stress, stress at a young age can cause psychological problems in the future. Because they are trying to balance multiple statuses at a time; employee, student, daughter/son and more may be added on to the list as time goes on.

Overall, a child under 14 years to be considered for a job requires maturity and dependability that needs to be developed over time. Instead of rushing them into this harsh and candid workplace we already have.

  • Just 14 and up is good enough.

There is really no justifiable work out there for kids under 14, there's nothing for them to do but simple, manual labor, therefore I believe there would be some sort of misuse of the children. We don't want this, but 14 and up should qualify for some jobs. Other than that children should be learning and that's it.

  • We tried that

We already tried that and it ended in abuse and low wages and oh yeah we decided chiled labor is wrong. Kids that age should not be ficusing on work they should be focusing on getting an education. Required education, public school, and the end of child labor have done nothing but improve the country

  • Lacking skills what can they actually do?

In the current world there are only so many jobs a person can do with a lack of real skills - light industrial, manufacturing, custodial, fast food, landscaping, and prostitution.

What bars children from doing any of these things is the level of danger and the risk of injury to others if they are remiss in their duties. A poorly cooked meal can kill you. I once took sick from Mayo left out in the sun by a 16 yo, I shudder to think of a 10 yo at this.

Besides which... Isn't 15 old enough? Especially as the rigors of a basic education grow yearly - I mean at this point you can literally fail Kindergarten.

Besides which shouldn't childhood be about being a child? Playing, learning, and enjoying a brief period in life where you aren't running the Rat Race? Must we take all their fun from them?
