Should medical science always seek to prolong life?

  • As a physician, I say no

There is a point when keeping someone alive is nothing but torture. I have treated people who are dying body part/ organ system by body part/organ system. I've had one person tell me they want to undergo surgery to prolong their life by weeks to months when the outcome of those surgeries would destroy their quality of life. If you live in horrible pain and suffering simply to stay alive, why do it? People need to come to grips with mortality.
