Should preparing students for the workforce be the primary mission of colleges and universities?

  • Yes colleges should provide a work place for each career so students can be hands on and have enough knowledge for their career choice.

    We as individuals already went to high school to learn our basics like math English reading and etc. Now im not saying thats all the knowledge we need to get a job but there should be a system that provides internships at the school where students can take up the classes that is needed for their career but colleges should also be given classes where they are working in their field and graduating with a job because he/she worked so hard in school. HIGH School was for us to stay in the books college supposed to be a place to take a couple of classes and work in a force that best fits your career choice that SHOULD be provided by the school

  • Colleges prospers when their students prosper

    In tough economic times, college students need all the help they can get in developing a skill set that makes them marketable to employers. Competition for job placement is extremely difficult, but by training students in skills that are directly transferable to the workforce, compared to esoteric and merely proximately linked skills, colleges will have students placed in more financially lucrative jobs. When students get jobs, they get income. When students get income, they are more likely to remember that their colleges gave them the tools to secure meaningful and lucrative employment. When students link employment to their college, they are more willing to donate back to the schools. When schools receive donations from alumni, they will listen to the alumni and continue implementing a curriculum that fosters job skills. This proliferates the cycle and benefits the colleges as well as the students who attend them.

  • Yes, it is time we changed our education system.

    Education has got to change. We cannot keep teaching the same way they did in the 1800's. Because of rapid advances in science, technology, and robotics, our people cannot enter the workforce without training. Since we no longer have any type of mentoring programs, then colleges and universities need to take the responsibility.

    The primary goal of higher education should be to provide the training and background that prepare graduates to become productive members of the workforce. Students should not be attending college simply for the sake of earning a degree, should have specific goals in mind. In turn college should be in the business of helping student reach those goals.

    Do not know how universities came to the conclusion that their job is not to prepare people for the workforce. If people are going to spend all that money and not come away with a decent paying job, then what is the point of going to school in the first place?

    I think that too many colleges these days are more concerned with getting the money from their students than actually helping their students be prepared for the work force once they graduate. I think it is a University's responsibility to make sure their students are successful after college since it could help the school's reputations.

    While schools should prepare students for a productive life, it is too narrow and short-sighted to say school is all about that. Over-specialisation according to an ever changing economy and labour trend is risky. Given what is observed of the trends of tertiary education today, many universities then to offer 'flavour of the month' degrees that cater to trends that can quickly fall out of flavours. If schools are to focus on just the needs of the current economy and provide practical degrees and content that is too niche and too narrow for change, students will be at a loss when what they study are out of trend by the time they get out of school. Instead, schools should take care to focus on the EQ and focus on expanding students' capacity as an individual who can critical think, and creative enough to adapt to any economic of the future. Entrepreneurship and spirit for innovation and the aptitude for life long learning is more important and more endearing in today's business climate.
