  • Yes they should.

Yes. I think a society that is ignorant enough to allow people to be locked up in cages for simple possession of drugs, should be required to at least buy a TV for the ones they lock up. Especially when they completely ignore the fact that prison populations in this country are ridiculously above other nations. I wonder if that is because we just have more "bad people" here or we have a common population that doesn't vote for what is fair, they vote for what their bible tells them to vote for.

  • Should prisoners be given so may luxuries

I don't see a television with censorship programming as luxury.
Inmates should be allow to have television to watch, religion, education, cooking shows , music (non-violent) theatre, history ,
and vocational skills related programs, this would help with their rehabilitation. Reading is essential the brain needs positive stimulation in such environment as prisons, there is otherwise an array of endless negativity going 90% of their time spent !!! You can not expect to kill a brain if your purpose is to revive , retrain, or rehabilitate it !! You must nurture it with positive redirection. Books, books, and more Books...These must also be censored.!!! Better than allowing riots, rapes, drug use and all many of debauchery.

  • They're not given that much. Silly public.

I believe that they should have a comfortable bed, three hot meals (or cold meals, depends on what they want) a day, I believe they should have a bathroom, and a hot shower. I believe they should have all the medical care they need, I believe that they should be allowed enough excercise (at least 1 hour) and their cells should be heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. They should also be allowed visits, and maybe some cards or books if they can get their hands on them. They shouldn't be GIVEN cards or books, but if family members send them to the prisoners, they should be allowed to have them. There. That really isn't that much. They should also be allowed a chance at rehabilitation, and should be allowed resources to become rehabillitated.

  • Uh, loaded question

Prisoners aren't really given 'so many luxuries', and if they really were I would be a bit annoyed, but they have to endure an unhelpful punishment that will scar their lives for what they may have done when younger. The whole prison system is really at fault, but until they change that, give them their TVs!

  • See past popular public opinion....

I'm a criminology student at university and i'll think that once you read the evidence for providing privilege schemes and the correlation of reoffending you'll change your minds and support the argument that they should be allowed 'luxuries'.

What is attractive punishments to the public or even politicians are not always effective in reducing crime. In recent years the British public has largely taken the view that privilege schemes are overrated within prisons and there should be no chances for offenders serving sentences to obtain televisions, game consoles, films etc. Contrary to this research has proven that privilege schemes have overall had a positive effect in reducing overall crimes committed within prison

'luxuries' are in fact used as leverage, you behave and you get to keep it, in a time where the prison system is in crisis. There are riots up and down the countries in prisons, then you start to understand the needs for privilege schemes.

Prison itself is a sentence harsh enough, they don't also need to be punished whilst inside. They need inspiration to break cycles of reoffending.

If you read academic sources, actual research and journals from scholars and professors they'll tell you that offenders having access to what you call 'luxuries' ultimately reduces reoffending outside and crimes inside. Now surely thats the ultimate goal of prison.

  • No way, use the funds elsewhere

Both prisons and the NHS are funded by the government. We have patients waiting ages to go to the toilet because of staff shortages due to budget cuts. How much money is given to prisons to ensure that prisoners have the use of a television.I believe that the priority should be ensuring that innocent people can receive a caring and quality service from the NHS then secondly, prisoners receive basic food , bedding and toileting facilities. Then should there be funding left minor luxuries such as TV may be supplied so long as bad behaviour influences access to the luxury item.

  • There is a difference between treating someone Humanely and luxury.

They should be given the essentials food, water, heat and board. They should be treated with humanity and respect. That doesn't mean they should be given such unessential luxuries that they don't deserve and some decent hard working people can't afford. There are families out there who can't afford enough food to be healthy who have to rely on food banks to get by and still fail. A third of the UK's population is in poverty most of those are working poor. Yet the government can waste money giving eijits who through away the right to freedom TV's. Is that right? That a good law abiding person who got handed the short straw in life suffers when a violent criminal, when someone who doesn't care about the law or rights of others gets a cushy life when they should be getting punished? Is that fair, or just? No. How could it be. To the people who say that prisoners "have to endure a unhelpful punishment" Ask yourself when your kid dose something bad like bullying other kids or being disrespectful or whatever. Do you then take them out for ice cream? Of course not you ground them, you withhold privileges like TV or games for little while because you want to discourage this sort of behaviour so they don't grow up to be a menace to society. So why should we stop it when they get older when the little misdemeanours are replaced mugging people at knife point, rape, murder and other horrendous activities. Why let criminals live in luxury. Have you seen the inside of modern prisons there better than most hostels. Except in the hostel you get to leave because your not a violent psychopath with no regard for anyone else, your a poor student taking a backpacking trip with you equally poor student friends. People don't get sent to jail for no reason they're there because they done wrong (or occasionally were wrongly convicted) it's support to suck because its a punishment. That is the whole point. You're not meant to enjoy your time in prison it's suppose to make you not want to come back. So yeah treat the prisoners with respect, treat them humanely they shouldn't have to worry about there safety of health they're still people after all. They deserve that much but that is all they deserve. That shouldn't be allowed any luxuries because they are not human rights. They forfeited any entitlement to such privileges when they chose to break the law. When they chose to cause suffering to others.

  • No they shouldn't

They should not have these luxury's as they have done many more crimes and some of them are death related which this shows that they should not have all these special items in their prison cells for people who potentially have killed someone or multiple people or done something even worse.

  • They are criminals, they do not deserve many of the things they have

Having a television or a radio is a privilege not a right, even if the only did a minor crime, we have laws for a reason, and if they are broken then there are consequences, people should fear going to prison but that's not the case, many people now would rather go to prison to get free healthcare than go out get a job and pay for it themselves. Maybe if there weren't as many luxuries allowed then our crime rates would go down because people would definitely think things twice before breaking the law.

  • They do not deserve the luxuries given in prison life

Prisons give them a bed, a warm cell, a shower, exercise, a TV (sometimes even paying channels, a blanket.. Ect... They don't DESERVE prison life, they didn't have any consideration whatsoever to the victim or their family they could be living off of the streets or struggling to pa their rent with no luxuries at all for all we know and they deserve it much more than criminals!
