Should religion be treated as only an emergency detour?

  • No, you are either a believer or you aren't.

It is important to stay the same way all the way through. You can not decide you want to claim religion when it suits your needs. There are too many people killing their children, or falling on "faith healing" to literally get away with murder. If you believe in God, you have to ask yourself, 'is this really what God wants?'

  • You can't turn it on and off.

First, you'd have to explain what you even mean. If you mean what I believe you do, which is whether or not people should only turn to religion in times of emergency, well, of course not! We all have different beliefs, but if you do have a certain belief system, it should apply all the time.

  • It shouldn't be treated any specific way at all.

How someone sees religion is his or her own business. Personally I find all religions to hold no validity, and thus find resorting to it in an emergency to be the lowest form of irrational behavior possible. This sort of behavior is usually seen among those who are too scared of death to NOT believe in some god, but also too lazy to bother adhering to the tenets of a religion.

  • Everyone hates "that guy".

You know "that guy", the one who doesn't contact you for years, then shows up at your house asking for money, the guy that always bums car rides, food, and cigarettes from you but never kicks in or reciprocates. The guy that expects you to listen to him vent about problems, but is never there for you when you need someone. Assuming that God exists, why is treating him like an emergency detour any different than when some douchenozzle does it to you? Hey, I'm guilty of it too, but maybe the faithful need to look at their faith more objectively some times.
