Giving homework to children enhances their capacity to understand the subject better....Even if at school they are unable to comprehend something they can re read that chapter again and ask questions....Another principal cause for giving schoolwork is making students be much more aware of their learning. Learners are answerable for their study thoroughly so they oblige to put a great deal of effort into theor apprehension. Therefore, the accomplishment of prep is not only a responsibility for students to try their best but also a motivation to strengthen the cognition. Moreover, finishing homework helps learners becomes much more active to attain knowledge. It is easier for them to grasp the information in next lessons. By degrees, students might raise the sense of initiative in learning and others which is extremely favorable to handle unexpected situation
Schools should give homework. Teachers give us homework so we have something to do instead of watching TV. Homework over the holidays is okay but I disagree with bombarding students with homework packages that take away family time. If you plan correctly then you can spend time with family and your homework.
Practice with skills is necessary for learning how to adapt to different situations. However, teachers need to assign it and NOT check it, unless it's for marks. Quizzes will let you know if the students are getting it or not. Students, follow your own judgement. If you understand a topic, review the assigned questions, try the challenging ones. Don't understand, do some more. Someone said in the against giving homework section that students will ask for the help that they need if they need it, that teachers don't trust you to ask and that's why we assign so much homework. One of the hardest things to do is to admit that you don't understand something and to ask for help with it. Most students won't, even if they are struggling. Also, how do students know if they're struggling if they haven't actually tried to apply what was taught. Not teaching students good work habits in lower grades only does them a disservice when they attempt any post-secondary studies. Homework serves to reinforce the specific skills from the lesson but also teaches time management and study skills that students will need when they have less guidance for their learning in post-secondary.
Lots of students like me prefer to learn on their own rather than having a teacher lecture them. And homework does this. Homework lets students work on their own and helps them develop skills that they will need in their later life. Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. The only way to get good at something is to practice.
Because homework helps a student get more trained with the work they are learning. It also helps the student stay focus, alert and capable of doing hands-on work which will help the student in the future. Homework may take time but if you are able to do it at school than home shouldn't be harder but instead easier.
Children should definitely have homework. It helps them increase their skills in the subject they are learning. If they are having trouble with the topic this is a way for them to get extra help. Just having a lesson in class does not make it about the child. Homework is a way to let the teacher know if the child is struggling with the topic, or if s/he is doing just fine. Teachers should not stop giving homework, they should just give a little less.
Homework is important in order for students to understand what they're learning in a more personal way. Teachers and other administrators of education need to be aware of what is required to complete a homework assignment, and that not all students will have access to the resources required to do so. Schools must be able to provide these resources or assign homework that does not require resources that cannot be guaranteed in all homes.
Schools should be allowed to give homework. Homework is a vital tool to teach students time management skills, which is very important to have when you are in a professional work place. If you take homework out of schools you are doing a disservice to the students and are not doing everything possible to help prepare them for the real world.
Yes, schools should give homework to their students. I understand that too much can be stressful but the right amount is just enough for students to be able to show what they have learned and what they are having trouble with. Teachers need it to see where their students are at.
Homework should be required in every school. it is obvious that after the summer, when kids come back to school, they barely retained anything from the year before. I feel if you give homework, a child has to go home and review what they have learned in order to answer questions. This helps them keep the mind sharp. Most classes barely have enough time to review what has been learned, so homework is necessary in retention and good study habits.
I believe that homework is beneficial to a student because it gives them more practice in the subject matter, which further enhances their education. Also, homework gives the student a chance to identify areas that they are confused in so they can ask the teacher about them the next day. There isn’t enough time in a class for education to be personalized, so homework is the student’s effort into bettering their education.
If they have less homework then they have more game time. Which cant help then with learning .Also if they play on the computer its more worst . Its more worse because its bad for there eye. Also. Would you want then to learn or play. Therefore we should have more homework
- its practice for tests
- kids will understand the subject more
- students want to learn on their own instead of a teacher taking an hour to explain a concept
- kids will become very smart
- teachers would not stand to see a student fail on a test
Home works help the students also its a way to check if you understood the lesson or not , its may help them to be smarter and more motivated . Sometimes parents ask the teachers for a home work because they want there student to be good . But it also shouldn't be so long home work .
To be smart and pass our grade to be smart. To not be lazy or just do nothing because some kids they don't want to do it teachers care about them. Teachers love us but sometimes they or happy or mad teachers are helping us to not to lose . Teachers love us and teachers are helping us they are there for us.
Homework should be given to students so that they at least revise whats done in the class today as most of them do not remember. And homework days should be there like Monday for maths, Tuesday for science etc. Or can be given a lot on weekends. Homework has one solid benefit — mainly, if it is used as a tool to develop a love of reading. The point of education is to turn children into independent, critical thinkers that are responsible, happy people
One of the biggest things that causes stress (as a student) is homework. One of the main reasons is, as a student, I don’t think for a second that I actually benefit from homework. To me, it’s just something that causes unnecessary stress and in the end doesn’t actually do much for you. Sure, some practice of graphing concepts is good, but why couldn’t we just do board work in class? I think that we, as students, should not have homework for a number of reasons.
Some people say that homework is good. Some people say that homework is bad. Some just don’t care (not many). The people that say it is good usually argue that, well, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect. Like I said, why not do board work in school instead of sending work home? The dictionary definition of ‘school’ is: “an institution where instruction is given, especially to persons under college age: The children are at school.” In this case, why not just do a little practice to let the teachers make sure that the student understands the concept, and once they do, why do teachers bother to give them 10-20 more problems to do at home? Besides, from what I understand about teachers, they (maybe you are a teacher as well, you can possibly relate to this) hate grading homework and find it just as annoying as we do.
Another reason we shouldn’t have homework: it causes unnecessary stress. If what I said in the above paragraph is true, which it is, then homework is pointless. If there is no point to homework, then why assign it? All it does is cause stress that isn’t needed. Why would you do that? I have (as a student) had quite a lot of times where I have been up a lot longer than usual doing homework, sometimes make-up from missed school, sometimes because I simply forgot that we had homework in a particular subject and therefore didn’t do it. I then had to make it up the next night, and got marked down for it. Humans are forgetful. That means I got marked down because of human nature.
Some people say that homework teaches students self-discipline and responsibility; I know from experience that that is NOT true. I also found NO evidence for that while I was researching. Others say that it creates a link between school and family. Ok, so other than intruding on time that could be spent with family how does it do that? Still, some say that it helps kids to like learning. Again, I know from experience that this is NOT TRUE! If anything, it does the exact opposite of that. We all know it: Everyone hates homework.
There is only 24 hours in a day. Children and teenagers need about 10 hours of sleep. That leaves 6 hours to be awake at home. Many students struggle to finish homework in less than three hours. The other three hours would be for eating, showering and preparing themselves to go to sleep. I have hobbies that I don't have time to do anymore because I'm stuck indoors working
Homework makes so many things seem so boring to students so they begin to ignore and hate it and hello we live in the 21st century were internet teaches us so much more!!!!! With children being forced to read it makes reading more like a chore and who likes chores i mean seriously they should encourage it for fun.
The kids that do well on assignments are the ones that either don't need extra help, have educated parents with free time, or have wealthy parents who can hire tutors. The ones that don't do well are those that have a lot of home obligations (such as babysitting younger siblings while the parents are working second jobs), those with parents who can't help them or hire tutors for whatever reason, and those who go hungry in the evening or go cold because there's no heat, etc. There has to be a way for kids to get all their learning done inside the classroom, which for some is the only place where they have a chance to do any learning.
I'm in a very highly ranked academically high school, so I should expect plenty of homework, right? But often, it gets ridiculous. As a football player and someone who stays after school to work towards paying off some of the tuition, it is normal for me to come home and be stuck doing homework for a good four hours. I get home on average around 6:30 and start homework at about 8 (showering and that stuff). The amount of homework I get gives me ridiculous amounts of stress and a lack of sleep. And you know what those two things are bad for? Thats right, learning.
As a student taking many advanced classes I get more than a reasonable amount of homework. I get no added understanding of concepts or how to do the work. If I need help there is no teacher to help so I just get a bad grade. Also most of the time it's just work for the sake of work.
With homework they are making sure that the parents have the minimum amount of time possible to actively educate their own children by taking away every free time that parents can get with their children, thus brainwashing and creating drones to support their own evil agenda. There's more to it than just this but in a nutshell that is what it is.
Homework is a ridiculous waste of time that nobody enjoys. Not just the kids but teachers and parents as well. I don't think the teachers enjoy making the homework and handing out the detentions when it isn't done. Parents hate it as well as it interferes with "family events" and they have to deal with angry kids who don't like doing it. What is the point of homework?
I am a 16 y/o 11th grader in Philadelphia and we don't always get a lot of homework, but when we do it is an considerable amount. What frustrates me is that with doing this homework, whether it be a little or a lot, it is NEVER checked. If we have homework that is supposed to help teachers determine what we need help on, they should take the responsibility to actually read it instead of just looking to see if there are words on the page. If the teachers won't take responsibility, how do they expect us to?
When giving homework, not only does it take away free time, but it puts pressure on students. Students tend to cheat if they have a lot of homework. If students are not assigned homework they have more control in what they do and study better. If a student cannot study good on his/her test then homework could be given to that person to help him review.
I'm in 10th grade, and ever since I began getting homework I've hated it. I think it's inhumane. As a student, I watch the mental and physical state of my classmates decline as they stay up until 2 in the morning every night stressing out like crazy because of homework, and teachers have the audacity to say it's beneficial to us? I don't think so. Teachers need to understand that when we're having trouble in class, we will seek help and some practice work. Teachers don't seem to trust us to ask for help. If we do understand our classwork, then what's the point of piling it on night after night? Instead of giving students 6 more hours of schoolwork, give us some time at home to just relax and absorb what we've already learned. We would also waste much less class time correcting homework when we could be moving on to something new.
However, since teachers and administrators are still (for some reason) forcing this meaningless busywork on us, I would settle for just getting less. I think everyone agrees that kids get far too much homework, and it uses whatever free time we have left after school and extracurricular.
Students are humans beings too, and i'ts time we're treated like one.
If schools give homework, then the student could get stressed. If students get stressed, it can lead to all sorts of things. For example, stress can lead to suicidal thoughts, having trouble sleeping, and not wanting to talk to anyone. Vote no for non-stressed students! From the teacher - Lee Evergreen
Countries ranking significantly higher than the United States in all areas of education have banned homework. There is no reason as to why a child should be subjected to extra school work after seven hours of the stuff. If there should be an effective alternative to homework - such as shortening the already stupidly long "summer vacation" - then it should be implemented as to prevent exhaustion and apathy within the student body of the United States of America.
Students go to school for about 8 months of the year, with only two days of weekends and spread out breaks through the year. Students are already stressed with all of the schoolwork and projects they do at school; they shouldn't have to worry about extra work--that means they must take school home with them. Students should get every break they need.
I'm a middle school kid and I think we are getting way too much homework. This leaves no time for anything else we might do in "our copious free time". We have no time to do anything. I live in Canada and we are pretty good with education. At least that's what I thought until I found out that Norway is rated higher then we are and they don't give out homework. I find this ridiculous.
I am a middle school student in Canada who does NOT think we should get homework. The amount of it we get is obscene and ridiculous. I look at Norway and think, "Wow. They don't give out homework and they are rated 3rd in the whole world for education. If it was my choice, I would move to Norway!
If a teacher can't effectively communicate their message in a lesson then it's their fault. Students should not have to complete out of school assignments that require them to teach themselves. If the teacher is able to teach and homework is given to practice certain skills, then only 10-20 minutes of homework should be given. This keeps the assignment from becoming "busy work" - or repetitive problems that take up time.
Giving homework and requiring homework are two different things. I have no problem with schools giving homework (I toyed with whether to post on the yes or no side) if two basic conditions are met. First, teachers need to have more education in the practice of homework-giving. I have never seen a course in homework in a catalog of a school of education. There is a dearth of continuing education programs on homework for teachers to attend for their ongoing development. If teachers use homework as a tool, it should be a professional practice involving professional training, not just the belief that the teacher has. Second, parents should be recognized as the rightful heads of their homes. This means that, push come to shove, the parent has the final authority to decide what the child is required to do. If teachers wanted to give homework with that understanding, I would not find that a problem. But parents should never be in the position where they have homework problems in their homes and are rendered helpless to use their judgment in deciding what to do.

Studies show that homework does not help improve in any subject except Math. Students say that homework keeps them up to late. When students are sick, the homework is sent home for them to do when they should be getting rest. Plus, homework is a waste of paper and money.
Students need a break from school! After awhile it starts to get boring and kids loose focus and most of the answers end up being wrong because of lose of focus! Kids or students also have extra curriculum's after school that students have paid lots of money, but with homework kids are missing out trying to get there homework done so their not late for class or practice, and when they rush sometimes the answers are wrong because they have rushed their work. In conclusion there should be NO homework given by teachers. Thank you for your time and patience.
Homework doesnt do anything for you it causes stress and it gives you less time to do other things ,like outside activities, spending time with your family, and studying. Many teachers don't even check the homework so what is the point? Homework is one of the many reasons why children do bad on tests. It is a distraction.
Kids have after school activities and other stuff. It stresses kids out. My brother has homework over the weekends and he never ever gets to go outside. He also usually goes to bed at almost 10 o'clock at night because of homework. Kids should also get enough sleep so they can grow and live a happy life. It's not fair!!!!
When we get home we have a lot of stuff to do, and that's homework. We go to school so we don't have to do schoolwork at home.Homework is doing your chores and stuff NOT DOING SCHOOL WORK LIKE OMG !!!! I hate homework and i think its a big waste of my precious time that i will never get back. IT MAKES MY SKIN CRAWL, AGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many students have more then one homework assignment and giving them more is just absurd! Some students don't get time to study because of homework. Others are lucky enough to be able not to study an still get better grades then those who don't have that privilege. Several other students just can't handle the work. It's just too much. Two worksheets isn't a lot and can be handled with easily but several worksheets and finishing classwork is way too much work.
Homework is a pointless burden Giving homework to students is like feeding a horse after it's full. I, as a student, should not have be pressured more on work after I've gone through 8 hours worth already. The point of school is for students to understand the subjects so we don't need to repeat when we get home. If we were taught the topic once then there is no need to go over it again.
It is going to be a smile way to make kids get in trouble for what the TEACHERS give. It won't be very pleasant to be frustrated over a bunch of paper. It will also make kids wide awake all night fretting and wondering what their teachers would do when they find out that one of their kids didn't do their homework
Although this my help with studies this is children's spare time which they could be doing more exciting things than homework like having a social life, spending time with family and doing things. Like myself there are perfectionist children out there who spend a long time getting it to a certain standard that they want also children's lifestyles maybe hard at home so it makes it more difficult to be organised if the homework is not done this then ends in detention. I get at least two pieces of homework per day and I found it really difficult to keep up as some of them were essays, I contacted the school and they said they would talk to the teacher so that I wouldn't get so much, although they said they did this there is no change at all. When I have homework to do and I'm ill I don't want to do it but at my school if you miss days you are expected to complete the homework and hand in on the say day as other students, how stupid is this?
Homework took over my life and I really want it to stop
When I was in school in North Dakota, I was given A LOT of homework. I don't want my kids suffering the way I did and the amount of time it took to do my homework, If teachers want to give kids homework give them oral homework. Don't let minority rule.
As a parent, I would first like to state that I know my responsibilities. I am obligated to teach my children and assist them in all aspects of life, where they may need my assistance. My kids know that when they are facing an upcoming test mom is here to help. That being said, I despise being the one who has to tell my child that he/she cannot go out and play or watch a cartoon with their after school snack because school has been sent home with them. Sometimes I think it would just be easier for me to do their homework myself, rather than go through the same ridiculous fight every single night. Mind you, I have three girls and one boy and the amount of homework expected of them is absolutely ridiculous. We do nightly reading regardless of what the teachers request. Reading is a skill that must be developed and that I want my children to enjoy, although it is becoming more difficult everyday, considering the amount of time their noses are being held in books. I am in college myself and am relieved to complete my own work. The last thing I want to do in the afternoon is theirs!
I want to take breaks with my family and friends and hang out and chill out not be stuck in my house on the weekend when my other friends are having fun without me. Even if you do assign homework half of the students do not complete it or if it is done it's not to the best of their ability!!
If there is work to be done why not give it in class? It is a much more stable environment to work in without the distractions of the home. It also means students will do better being able to ask the teacher questions when ever they want and students will have a lower chance of forgetting to do it raising the unorganized's grade.
School homework is one of the more trivial things an education system can GRADE. Whether or not it is assigned should not be debated upon. The idea of extra practice is an idea that should be internally debated upon by the student. The American education system does not only take into account the students that just copy assignment from fellow classmates for "easy grades." What about those students that don't do the homework but have a natural understanding for the concept? Those students are deducted points from their grades just because an assignment they didn't feel like wasting their time on counts as a grade. They can master objective after objective and still get only average or below-average grades because of the added homework weight. Personally, I have been one of those secretly smart students that sits at the back of the class and sleeps, not because I don't intend to learn but because the standards and expectencies are too low. The homework I am assigned is neglected only because my thoughts are "if the classwork was trivial, then wouldn't the homework be just as pointless?" As this type of student I have not only scored a 31 ACT score, but also a 1900 SAT score while still maintaining a D- average just because of the homework assignments I don't do. International statistics show a negative correlation between the amount of homework assigned and testing scores.
Children should absolutely not have to go to school all day and then come home and do school work the rest of the day. It disgusts me that kids don't have time to be kids and learn through other avenues besides paperwork. It is not natural. It is not healthy. It is not what I want for my kids or any other children. Fed up.
There should be no homework because it stresses the students out. Many kids dont have time to do the homwork becasue they have something they have to do after school. Who really does the homework anyway. If they don't do it then what is the point of handing out homework.
Taking my everyday life as an example. I'm taking 2 AP classes plus 3 electives. I play varsity soccer, and I have a part time job. With all this plus homework, I only get to sleep 5-6 hrs avg. This is bad for our health. No homework = more/better health.
I am a 7th grader and our teachers barely give out homework, but I still have to spend 3-6 hours on homework every night because it gets all stacked up because I can't do it all in one night! Students should learn in school and do their work there! The government has already taken enough of our free time with parents! And you adults saying students learn more from homework, how would you like to have more than 4 more hours of work to do after you have already gone to work for the whole week? Personally, with all this homework, I don't get to enjoy the rest of the night. I come home, do homework, have supper, do more homework, and go to bed. I hope you people understand!
Schools should not give homework. Im a high school student in alot of classes. Over the years of getting home work was always a drag for me becuase i didnt want to go home and have to work again on school work. I eventually started to get tired of doing it and tired of staying up late till like midnight. Home work never made me any bit smarter nor did i get any skills out of it. Id do a whole lot better if there wasnt any home work my grades would be so much better than they are becuase of homework.
A typical school day lasts 8 hours. Students should do their work at school and have the rest of their day free. When I was in high school all of my classes were AP classes, they were all difficult, stressful and challenging. Then I would go home with usually 4 hours of homework to do after having already spent all day at school, not to mention trying to fit in extra curricular activities. Personally I think students should learn to be responsible and handle stress, but there should still be a limit.
If teachers cannot teach their class in away to make them understand what is being taught during class, then maybe we should consider having teachers that can get their point across during the day and not at night and weekends. We don't need kids spending their evenings and weekends trying to do a job that should be done in class. Maybe we need to assign the teachers (who are getting paid) homework until they are able to get students to pass their classes without assigning homework....
Though my child is not at this age yet, I hear of kids spending 2-3 hours a night on homework. This is crazy to me! I would much rather have them out playing, doing independent reading, and/or participating in after school activities and sports without the looming feeling of, when I get home I have to buckle down and work rather than relax and recharge. Growing bodies need sleep and that's what's going to get sacrificed if a kid needs to consistently stay up late to keep up with homework.
Adults need work-balance - kids do too!
When busy work assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework .
Students work hard every single day in school for about six hours and that in itself is tiring and even hell for some. There is so much pressure on students already and they dread going to school because teachers can be strict, lessons can be difficult and other students can be cruel. They look forward to hometime- it is the time they can relax and unwind, perhaps help out with the household chores, do some revision, read a book, play sport, hang out with friends etc- they need to enjoy themselves. Do we want students to be miserable all the time? Too much homework can cause depression as students are so stressed, and if it is just one simple sheet they usually copy off other students/ friends in class the next day anyway. There is no point in homework whatsoever. Have we forgotten how hard it is to be a young person surrounded by so many pressures? Homework does not need to be one.
As a collage student i have less of time. I have a lot of thing to be done and the homeworks given by the lectures are too many and sometimes they are so hard till me myself can do it by own. So in the end i cheat myself by copying my friend's homeworks. Everything seems doesnt worth it.
Giving homework to students is like feeding a horse after it's full. I, as a student, should not have be pressured more on work after I've gone through 8 hours worth already. The point of school is for students to understand the subjects so we don't need to repeat when we get home. If we were taught the topic once then there is no need to go over it again.
