  • Children should read in ALL seasons, especially in the summer

Did you know that summer is the only season when you don't read, you forget all of the information you learned in the fall, winter and spring? I think that summer reading is important so when students advanced to the grade next year, they will tell their new teachers what they read over the summer.

  • Schools should make children read over the summer.

Schools should make students read over their summer vacations so that they will be prepared for the next year of classes. The summer is an important time to learn outside of the classroom, but students should not get lazy and forget about their academics all together. Summer reading is a good compromise.

  • Yes they should make children read.

Children should have to read over the summer as it will keep their minds sharp and help them be more prepared for when the next school seasons start. When children stop learning and reading during the summer the generally loose a giant chunk of knowledge that they gained the previous year.

  • Yes, or take on some other light project.

Children should not be having a whole summer off anyway because we are no longer running on an agricultural schedule. However, if we have such a schedule for our schools, then the children should be given reading assignments or some other simple but productive projects to keep their minds active.

  • Reading is not a punishment.

Good reading skills are essential to effective communication. Statistics show that avid readers have more advanced vocabularies as well as better reasoning and problem-solving skills. In this context, reading is not a punishment and should not be promoted as such. Rather, it should be promoted as a relaxing activity that keeps minds active, creative, and imaginitive.

  • Schools should have a summer reading schedule

Because of our long gap in between school years, due to summer vacation, I believe that take home reading should be required. Look at places like China where they have school year round, they are far ahead of us in terms of test scores. Having mandatory summer reading is a good way to keep minds sharp over the long summer breaks.

  • No, schools shouldn't make children read over the summer.

No, schools shouldn't make children read over the summer. It should be up to the parents to make sure that their kids read over the summer. And to be honest most kids still probably wouldn't read if the school demanded it over the summer break, it would be a waste of time and money.

  • No they should not.

Having children read over the summer is more of a parents job than a teachers. I think if it is made mandatory by the school many students will forget about it through vacation plans and hanging out with friends and the parents will be too busy to enforce it so they end up with an unfair grade.
