  • Growing New Trees Takes Time

While the argument to continue using paper because trees are renewable may be compelling, realistically a softwood tree like pine takes anywhere from 15-25 years to mature enough to be turned into good paper. Instead, schools should look at expanding the availability of electronics to disadvantaged students and decrease reliance on paper products. I have had classes where I have filled over two 3-inch binders with papers from the class. It seems unnecessary to use so much paper when the vast majority of students can access technology and the internet at home. For those that cannot, printing a sheet or two is not difficult and will save a lot more trees.

  • Schools Should Not Stop Killing Trees for Homework

Schools generate a lot of paper, from homework to study guides to individualized education plans. Schools should not stop killing trees to generate paper, however. Homework promotes study skills, time management skills, and reinforces academic skills. Homework modalities may switch to an online-based method, but not all students have access to Internet or computers at home. Therefore, paper-based homework should still be an option. Sorry, trees. We'll plant more.

  • No, there are tree farms.

No, schools should not stop killing trees for homework, because paper literally grows on trees. Paper is a renewable resource. When the school runs out of paper, they can grow more trees to make some more. There is no need to stop using paper for homework, because there is more where that came from.
