  • Surely it’s better to abort a female fetus than to have a daughter whom you don’t love.

I believe that sex determination of fetuses is an issue that the government should stay out of. The worst that could happen is that some women may decide to abort their fetuses based on the fetal gender. But so what? James Watson, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1962), says that women should have the right to abort for any reason. Some women may prefer boys, some may prefer girls and yet others may have no preference at all. Given the dowry system in India, it is safe to say that most women will prefer boys and may even abort if they know that their fetus is female. Let us examine what this may lead to.

At first glance, it seems obvious that legalizing sex determination of fetuses will lead to a large number of female fetuses being aborted. However, the children that are born will be of the sex desired by their parents and will therefore be better cared for. Due to the decrease in the number of females per 100 males, a few decades later the demand for grooms will substantially drop and men will be lucky to find a bride let alone obtain dowry from her parents. This will lead to the much-awaited demise of the dowry system. Unfortunately, some men will remain bachelors for life; as far as I can see, this is the only problem that will arise. The fact that there are fewer women means fewer children will be born in the next generation, so this will result in a population decrease, something that can only help India in the long run. With the dowry system decapitated, there will no longer be a reason to abort female fetuses and this will lead to an increase in the number of females per 100 males and the sex ratio will eventually approach 1.

  • Yes, it would cut down on infanticide.

Yes, sex determination should be legalized in India, because there are still a great deal of babies that are left for dead in India because they are born the wrong gender. This would let couples determine the sex of their baby, which would cut down on the number of babies that are killed when they are born. This is humane.

  • Legalize sex determination.

I believe sex determination should be legalized in India because I believe people in India as well as other countries should be able to choose the sex of their babies early on. Its not dangerous and the legalization would make many people happy due to the fact that india already has a sex misbalance.
