Should spanking children as a punishment be banned?

  • Harms the Child

I generally don't like infringing upon a parent's right to punish their child, but spanking doesn't work. It only increases fear and not respect. Children who are spanked are more likely to be depressed. Spanking children actually causes their brain to have less gray matter. Children who are spanked are more aggressive, more likely to become addicted or depressed and perform lower on IQ tests.

  • It is bad

There are better ways of parenting than resorting to violence. In the 1970’s Sweden made it illegal to spank children. Children didn’t suddenly become immoral, in fact by changing the legal structure of society, Sweden's laws allowed their people to better parents.
Physical punishment and child abuse are also closely linked, this was why when Sweden banned spanking, rates reducing physical child abuse in Sweden as a whole. For theses reasons how can spanking be a good thing?

  • Massive sociological data clearly demonstrates the long-term negative impacts of corporal punishment.

The link between tobacco and heart/lung and other diseases is well established. So too with spanking and negative outcomes. See Univ. Of New Hampshire's Family Research Laboratory for facts, not propaganda. There seem to be two reasons to spank children. First, you were spanked as a child and you turned out alright. So you are or will spank you own children,The same logic could be applied to your father hitting your mother. She turned out alright, so you do or plan to beat your wife. The second reason is cherry picking Jewish folklore from the old testament. If that's our guide to justice, we should stone to death an alcoholic son at the village gate.

  • Its not the most effective way to discipline

While spanking should be banned, parents need to be educated on how to better discipline their children.

Spanking suited a different time when kids were taught to do as they were tolD no matter what. It does not suit today's society when kids are taught to think and consider the consequences of their actions.

  • It is illegal to hit an adult, so why should It be okay to hit a vulnerable child?

There are better ways of parenting than resorting to violence. In the 1970’s Sweden made it illegal to spank children. Children didn’t suddenly become immoral, in fact by changing the legal structure of society, Sweden's laws allowed their people to better parents.

  • Yes for the reasons

That the child will always run away from the parent or person who's the spaky. The children will resort to stopping it from happening to their younger siblings. That is why children what it to stop and have their own rights. So thanks for reading and that's why children should not get spanked

  • It's short term pain

People say that it is wrong because it hurts the child. Come on. It's not as if you're shooting them in the kneecap. It is minimalistic pain that lasts for a few seconds, and an hour later, they won't even remember it. It's an easy way to teach children wrong from right.

  • Why should it?

I've always found it odd that the people who seem to be opposed to spanking are the same ones that would be horribly offended if you judged their parenting skills, with their response being "don't judge me, you don't know what's best for my child. I do".

    Spanking =/= abuse
Just like sending the child to bed without dinner =/= neglect.
