  • cell phone use in school

kids should but shouldnt be allowed to use their phones in school.(1) kids could use calculaters and other stuff.(2) kids could use their phones as laptops. but (3) kids could get on facebook and games without the teacher knowing nore caring because ur allowed to use your phone.

  • A phone can be used for educational purposes.

Students should definitely be able to use their phones during class. A phone is a great device. It can used for many educational things like research, projects, calculators, and even putting in important dates when a homework assignment or a project is due. You can also use a phone to call or text your parents if maybe you forgot your lunch at home, need lunch money so you can eat at school, or to let them know that you have tutorials after school that day. There are many things that phones are useful for.

  • Increase excitement in education for teens.

It's boring for teens to look through a book to find answers. If the teachers allowed students to whip out their phones in class and search for the answer that way, students will be more motivated and more excited to search for the answer. Also, it could be a convenience for note taking. You could easily snap a quick picture of the notes on the board or voice record all of the notes the teacher is saying.

  • Cell phones are good

I believe that cell phones SHOULD be allowed in public schools for many reasons. They are good for education, safety, and much more.

    1. Cell phones are good for education. Cell Phones are good for education for many reasons. First you can use cell phones for research purposes. Although most schools have at least 1 computer in the classroom and a computer lab, sometimes this still isn’t enough. It can also be expensive to provide a computer to each student at school, so a good option is to use cell phones for research instead. Next, I want to talk about why apps are good for education. Some people think that some apps are bad and kids will get distracted and use them in class. And the truth is that cell phones have many educational apps as well. Which do you think would be more fun and exciting for a student? Either studying with a boring book that is hard to understand, or playing an educational app that is still studying, but much more exciting. I would definitely choose the second choice. Here are some good features of phones that are good for school: 1.Calculator. It doesn’t matter if your phone is expensive or not, almost every single phone has a calculator. Lots of students are required to have a calculator as one of their school supplies, but if they have one on their phone, then they don’t have to get one. 2. Stop Watch. Lots of phones have a stopwatch, which can be used in science class. I know that when I was in public school we used stopwatches all the time for experiments, and the teacher only had 3 stopwatches so we had to take turns. 3. Dictionary. Cell phones can be used as a dictionary, which can be VERY useful in a classroom setting. You can always search on the Internet for the definition, or if you classroom or school doesn’t have wi fi, you can text to 466-456 the word you need defined and Google will text you back the definition of that term.

    2. Cell phones keep you safe. Believe it or not, a cell phone could save your life. Here is an example: On April 20, 1999, 2 teenagers walked into Columbine High school carrying sub-machine guns and homemade bombs intending to do some major damage. 13 innocent students were murdered and many more would have been if it weren’t for some students and their cell phones. 1 student, hiding for his life, calls 911 and describes the location of the school, and what the murderers looked like. If it weren’t for him and his cell phone and many others, many other students would have died. There are many other true stories like this one where people’s lives were saved because of cell phones.

  • Cell Phones Allowed

Students should be able to use cell phones in school, because some of the school supplies that they need might already be an app on their phone that does that. This would save parents a lot of money too. Also, schools would not have to use laptop or iPad carts, students could just use the Internet on their device.

  • In terms of passing period or after school activities, I believe they come in handy.

Yes, phones are distracting, but only during class. But what would parents do if their child has to stay after school for tutoring, sports, and other after school activities? I know that when I was in after school activities my coach would be very upset if I had to use their phone because it is their personal phone. Also, there has been many times when I have needed to contact my mom about issues that involve my personal health.

  • Cell Phones Should Always Be Allowed In Grades Higher Than Third

Children should definitely be allowed to have a cell phone on school property because of emergencies and other things. They can be used for calling or texting in case of emergencies or even better used for calculating, searching, calling, texting, or if you forgot something you may also be in contact with an adult.
Now, some parents think if the kids need something their main office will call them but what if something happens to you somewhere else in school and you don't have a cell phone in your pocket? What's going to happen? You might be in big trouble.... So that is my opinion on why you should bring a cell phone!

  • Yes we should.

We should be able to use cell phones in school because we will need them for help and when we need to search up something for homework, and also so if we get lost (not that you will.) Like if you're getting a ride from a stranger you should always have a phone.

  • It'll help keep their social life active.

If students have their cell phones at school they could continue talking to their friends, and, in an emergency, text or call their parents or the paramedics. Also they could research stuff if needed if all the computers are in use. They could also take notes easier on cell phones or iPods.(:

  • Yes they should!

Students could contact their parents if they forgot supplies at home. It could be a money-saver on calculators and instead of wasting so many trees on agendas students never use, they could use a notes app on their phone. If you think students could cheat on tests and other things, its not like the teachers can't take phones away before test. It would be a way cooler way to learn. As long as they get their work done, I don't see the problem with it.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Yes, there are many good reasons.

Sometimes kids forget their lunch and need to text their parents to get food. And what if you forgot to ride the bus or not? You can text your parent and ask. What if you need some medicine but have to have your parent's permission, you could text and make sure it's ok.

  • Cell phones should be used just in case of an emergency, since it would be good to have a phone on you.

A lot of people get stuck in situations when they have their phone in their locker and not in their hand, when there could be a serious situation such as a tornado, intruder, or bomb threats and if they died that very day they wouldn't be able to tell their loved ones goodbye.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Students should have the same rights.

The reason they should allow cell phones in school is because students may need to contact a parent or a parent may need to contact the student. Teachers are allowed to use cell phones in class, so why not students? Students should have all the same rights as any administration.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • I believe that trusting students to have a cell phone in class instills a level of respect that they pass on to teachers.

Students should be allowed to bring their own devices and enjoy that freedom, while also being able to focus on their learning. Bringing their own device will encourage them and show a level of respect that they appreciate, and in return, they'll pay more attention to the teachers and become better students because they give back the respect they earn. Only those who fail to show respect should have their devices taken away by the teachers.

I hope this helps. Thank You.

  • Yes, student should use their phones at school

We are preparing students for adult life; we should therefore allow them to use the tools that they will be using in their adult life. If we are preparing our students for life after school, we should allow them to use the tools they will be using when they get there. How many jobs can you think of right now where a smart phone is not beneficial? Mechanics order parts on their phone, engineers view blueprints, doctors calculate dosages, and grocers check inventory. The list is endless. By the time our students enter their professions, the need to utilize mobile technology will be even stronger. Not preparing our students for that world is negligent.

  • Cellphones in class: the learning and safety tool.

Pretty much everywhere, cell phones are banned because most people say it's distracting. Teachers don't want kids texting in class when they're trying to teach them important things. But the truth about more modern phones is they can be a great learning tool. Students can use calculators (most likely not during math), stopwatches, timers, educational apps, the internet, and more with their mobile phones nowadays. School filters can connect with the wifi and be used to filter specific things that need to be filtered. Also, cell phones should also be used for safety. The employees at a school say you don't need to use your phone to contact people but what if something happens like the school phone line goes dead? Also, if you need a phone number the school doesn't have, it will most likely be under your contacts list. And if students might need to contact a student in another class for something important, they can always contact them. And if a student is sick, they can Facetime or Skype another student during class to watch the lesson and not miss anything important.

  • We Should Be Allowed

I'm 17, And A Junior in Texas ... We have so many rules about the cellphone policy but i believe we are old enough to become young adults in school.. So much stuff is happening in the schools today, that our parents send us out to school never knowing if are we coming back home.

  • using cellphones in school is helpful

They can get many assignments done in a very short time, it's better than using a computer or a laptob because cellphones are easier and faster to use. Also teachers can take the cellphones before the exams and the tests so they can make sure they're not cheating on any test. They can also take their phones away if they were distracting the teachers or the students in the classroom.

  • I Do Agree

I Agree With you because kids can use all kind of things on their phone and it will also save the school some extra money to buy other things like more pencils for the kids and all types of things like that. Schools need to be wiser and think positive. They are always trying to take something and make it negative.

  • Cell phones are very useful.

If you play a sport, you'll need a cell phone to get a ride home. Some kids get more done if they have music to listen to. Kids should be allowed to have their phones in school because it gives them and their parents a sense of relief knowing that if something happens to them they can get in touch with someone. If students have their cell phones at school, they could continue talking to their friends, and in an emergency text or call their parents or the paramedics. They could research stuff if needed if all the computers are in use. They could also take notes more easily on cell phones or iPods.

When they do that, they will better understand the topic and work harder to have more time on there phone. Cell phones are efficient, time-saving and can make learning fun since there are apps that can be used educationally for school purposes.
sometimes you have to trust that students will be responsible. Most students nowadays have cellphones or other media devices like iPod, tablets, etc. Put reminders for deadlines and take pictures of homework and send it to friends that are sick.
You could even take pictures of homework in a textbook just so you know what to read and you don't have to bring so many textbooks home. If teachers are preparing students for adult life; Then they should therefore allow students to use phones as tools like we will be using them in our adult life. • The children need their cell phones in case of emergency or to use to study and get research.

Children need their cell phones in school in case of emergencies and also to research data and facts in class. If there is a shortage in computers, students should be able to use their phones for internet and/or calculators already provided on their phones. Also to send messages to group mates in class that missed a day or two.

  • Phones are helpful.

If students could use their phones they could help the school save money on things like calculators and computers. Phones could also give students something to work for, they should be aloud to use cell phones. Ancient Roman warriors could only join the army if they had land, because they had something to fight for. Offer kids a chance to get out their phones and they'll work harder.

  • Cell phones help a lot

If u have a cell phone in school and there is a say fire or tornado u could call your parents or relatives to come pick u up so u are safe from the fire or tornado and u can txt or call your friends for help instead of yell for them in class.

When kids 10 thru 16 are bored, they dont listen, they play with other kids. But, if you tell them they can look up thinks on their phone, they will want to look more things up and participate. When they do that, they will better understand the topic and work harder to have more time on there phone. Its very simple.

  • Students should use their phone.

Students should be allowed to bring their own devices and enjoy that freedom. Also, it's important to bring the own phone to use for emergency contact with their parents, or if something happens at the school. Students should allowed to contact or text each other. Phones can be silenced during class or study periods and be active only in appropriate places.

  • Students should be able to have their cell phones with them at school.

If there is an emergency with a younger sibling or a family member if you have your phone you can react faster than it going through the school and it also protects your personal calls that school doesn't need to know about. Also newer phones can hold music which has been proven to help studying. But on the other hand phones are very distracting with all the new apps and text messaging. But if its allowed at the right places and times then yes.

  • Students should be allowed to use phones in school.

Some kids need uniforms in school. If they forget them the can send a quick text and keep out of trouble from their gym teacher. They can also use them to keep organized in school. If they keep notes on their phone they don't have to worry about losing them, or not bring them to class.

  • YES ALL FOR IT

Everyday someone, somewhere in the world faces an emergency. Students should be allowed to carry cell phones on them during class in case an emergency should occur. With all the school shootings and deaths recently, this should not even be a question! If a shooter comes into the school and the teacher is unable to use their cell phone, what happens then? I will always back up kids having cell phones in schools! I can understand a phone being on vibrate or silent, but having one on them. Of course teachers are not going to want students on their phone's during class, but if it could save a life I bet people would think differently!

  • Cell phones should be allowed in school.

Cell phones should be allowed in school because if there is an emergency at the school (example: fire, intruder, etc.), kids would be able to contact the local emergency 911 station and get help. In conclusion, I believe that kids having cell phones in school could save people's lives in emergency situations.

  • It Will Help Their Grades.

Students can look up facts and use a calculator in math. They can use their phone during lunch, so they won't use it during class. They can use their phone before school to tell people not to call or text them, so it doesn't disrupt class. We should let students use their cell phones in school.

  • I say Yes

My vote is yes because during class,(when appropriate, of course) students can do research on their phones for an assignment and they can keep important dates on their phone for things such as homework assignments due and upcoming tests. But, if someone uses it when not appropriate, it can be taken away.

  • Kids everywhere use them.

I personally use cell phones in class, even though I am not allowed to. I know lots of people that use cell phones in class. It is a way to communicate, because teachers nowadays don't let us talk or pass notes. Kids can't always be quiet. There are three main learning types, and some of them are kids that need to move around and talk. Only a few kids can sit through one hour or longer of classes. SCHOOLS SHOULD USE CELLPHONES. They also can help with learning faster, by browsing the Internet, and getting apps and stuff.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They can be used appropriately.

They should be able to have their cell phones, because if there is an online textbook that they can download onto their phone, they could save the school or even their parents money. If people think that is too big of a distraction, the school teachers should be able to tell if they are using the device appropriately if they walk around the class.

  • It helps with school work.

I strongly agree that they should allow us to take our cell phones to school, because some students use their phones to look up answers on the Internet to support them in an answer. I have found that more kids have higher grades with the help of their cell phones!

  • Yes, I believe phones should be allowed.

Well..... I guess to start off phones are used nearly everywhere, especially in schools, you can't change that, you might as well just go with it if not then too many people will be getting in trouble, which doesn't solve anything except make a kid who will hate school, not care, and become a pest to not only the teacher, but his future AND the kids around him.

  • Students should be able to use phones in a classroom.

What if there is an emergency and they have to call their parents or legal guardians? Students can use their phones to write notes so they never lose them. They could also use it as a computer in case they need to research something. Their are ways students can learn from using their phones. Their are educational apps that they can use or they could have a textbook on their phone so they don't have to carry so much stuff around which can cause back pain.

  • Yes students should be allowed to use cell phones in school

Cell phones are great! They can be a distraction to students like using them for non-educational reasons like going on Facebook, Twitter, etc. But sometimes you have to trust that students will be responsible. Cell phones in school can be used for many educational reasons. In a way, it can also save the school money. Most students nowadays have cellphones or other media devices like ipods, tablets, etc. You can use a cell phone as a calculator, use it for research, put reminders for deadlines and take pictures of homework and send it to friends that are sick. Cell phones are efficient, time-saving and can make learning fun since there are apps that can be used educationally for school purposes.

  • Cell phones enhance learning.

The purpose of school is to help students learn the most possible. Some may say that cell phones will distract from learning, but in reality cell phones can help students learn more, especially in classes with a lot of students. Sometimes teachers cannot answer all of the questions students may ask, and for this reason, it would be beneficial for students to be able to look up the answers themselves. Also, people that are better at using technology will be more likely to be hired than someone without that skill. With today's world becoming so technological, it is important that students incorporate technology and communication into their daily lives.

  • Kids should use phones in school to learn in the new generation

Kids can use cell phones to do research instead of having to read books. Books can make kids tired or bored and a cell phone will be able to keep them more focused. Cell phones are also beneficial in case of an emergency. If a school is under knockdown, they could use them to call their parents and reassure them that everything is okay.

  • A phone is useful.

A phone could be good for kids. What if in class they have an accident, such as falling or something. They can call their parents right away instead of waiting in a long line at the front office to call your parents. If a kid is distracted when a text is sent or the phone is ringing, that is their problem. The student could just turn their cell phone off or put the volume down. And people who text them should know when to text them or call them. A friend who texts you a lot should know when to not text you and leave you alone. Also, what if there is a problem in class? An example is when kids do experiments. If someone goes wrong, a kid can Google the problem to help him/ her.

  • Yes, my school allows phones in school and it is very beneficial.

I am a high school student, and we are allowed to use cell phones during passing time in the hallways and at lunch. This gives us time to text and use social networking out of the classroom, so we can get it out of our system so we are less inclined to text during class. I think that the respect that the administration of my school gave us was helpful because now we respect them and only use our phones during designated times.

  • It does Lots of Things.

You can be in touch with your children, and know their whereabouts. (The Pew study noted that 48 percent of parents use the phone to monitor their child's location.) Your kids can reach you in the event of an emergency, and vice versa. If in danger, your children can reach the authorities or a medical provider. Phones can be silenced during class or study periods, and active only in appropriate places. Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you can easily reach your kids for any reason: to ask them questions, change plans, or to simply say hello.

  • Students should definitely be allowed to bring their phones to school because if the student gets lost you can look up directions.

If a student walks home from school, then their parents better be concerned if their child does not have a phone because of the 50% chance that they might get lost. But you can lower that 50% chance to a 5% chance if you give them a phone. For example, If your child has an iPhone they can go on Google maps and search for directions.

  • because it is important there might be an emergency

Yes because whenever your teacher phone doesn't work you could always have your phone or if you get on a bus and your in traffic or something your mom would be worried and you wouldn't have a phone to call anybody. Everyone deserves to have a phone just in case of a emergency, and also what if someone around you is trying to hurt you?

  • Yes, students should be able to use their phones!

What happens if there is a lock down at your school and you can't go to the office to call your parents or anything? If students weren't allowed to being their cell phones to school, then you wouldn't be able to contact your parents or 911. Also, if students forgot anything at home, then they would need to contact their parents. Sometimes, if you use the office's phone, some parents may not pick up the phone since the school's number isn't saved as a contact number. Technology is also increasing and if most students don't even know how to use a simple electronic, like a phone, then they will have a difficult time. For these reasons and many more, students should be allowed to use their phones during school.

  • The Future is here

Times have changed. Could you adults be able to do your job without a smartphone? Probably not. The new phones of this era are capable of accessing billions of websites full of knew research topics in seconds. Kids could also use the phones to set reminders about homework later in the day. I know that I always forget to do my homework after a long day of school.

  • Should kids be able to take phones to school.

I think they should because some kids have there moms or dads text them to tell them that they will probably not pick them up from an after school activity and sometimes that happens to some kids like some of my friends. Their mom didn't pick them up from school.

  • Students can be responsible

Most students are responsible enough to use their phones in school. Although you may think that all of them are not responsible. Just one student making a mistake will ruin it for the rest because teachers are looking for a flaw with phones in class. Don't look for flaws just support it.

There are a lot of positive attributes to phones nowadays that can certainly enhance education.. DO I think kids should be free to play angry birds all day? Absolutely not. Networking
a mobile phone will almost certainly become a very important communication and networking tool for your child. A phone of his own can promote your child’s sense of belonging and connection to both friends and family. It lets him stay in touch anytime and anywhere.
    Safety
Mobile phones are one way for you and your child to contact each other whenever you need to. It can give you peace of mind and help keep your child safe when she’s out without adult supervision – but don’t rely solely on a mobile to keep her safe.
    Skill development
a mobile phone will give your child the opportunity to develop mobile communication etiquette, and media and communication skills.

  • We students should be allowed to bring one for emergencies.

Mobile phones are not totally bad. Most parents say that it ruins their studies, but they just don't know that in case of emergency it is very useful. For instance, in school, what if the parents of those students are in emergency need who can help them? What if their parents need them or they have something important to talk about while the student is in school?

  • when in an emergancy

I strongly feel as though students should be able to have there cellular phones out during industrial times only when needed. Let's just say that your friend won't leave you alone to tell something private to your other friend, then you need to text it to them. Or what if your school has a lockdown, then you may need to get in contact with your parents. Then you need a phone.

Also to call your parents in case you forgot your work at home or in case of a ride home after school. We can also need it if your mom calls or text you to tell you something important.

I think this is a good argument because many children can and will learn from being able to use their cell phones in class so then they can be more involved with class. Their are many diffrent types of ways to communicate with them such as things like likedin can be used to be in communucation of with your teachers.

  • Note taking tools

I use my phone in school to take notes. I find that I am more likely to look back on my notes if they are written on something that I use everyday rather than written in a notebook that I often ignore. I believe this could be the case for all students. Electronics have become much more efficient than pencil and paper.

  • Yes, we should have cell phones in class.

We should be able to have cell phones in class. If we need help, we could email for help or ask our parents for things we may have forgotten, such as a textbook. Sometimes teachers have difficulty helping all the students understand what is being taught. If we had cell phones, we could look up tips to help us understand the material easier.

  • I say yes

Students should be allowed to have their phones out so they can get on Google or call their parents if something were to happen at school or one of the teacher. If they didn't have their phone then the could not get on Google or call their parent if something happen at school or one of the teachers.

  • phones are helpful

Listening to music helps you block out other distractions in the classroom. Teachers and students both use the internet to look up answers for worksheets and for questions asked by the teacher themselves. Students can also interact with parents to exchange info about sport schedules, about ways to get home, ask to go home when no feeling good physically or emotionally and for many other reasons. Students often have horrible memory and forgot homework, their lunches, money needed to buy things (such as water, snacks, lunch, and pay for school things), projects due that day, friend's clothes or a somethings needed for sports or band/orchestra. During class many students will finish what the teacher asked them to work on and they will sit there bored, so many will start playing games, and many games work on brain reflexes and works the muscles (brain exercises). Some may look up books on the internet and start reading, and reading can boost your language skills and vocabulary. Yes, cell phones can be a distraction but thats the students choice. Its their choice if they don't pay attention and later fail the class, so giving students the freedom of using their phone in class is a lesson is responsibility and teaches them to not abuse freedom, to make smart decision and use time wisely.

  • Students learn things

Do you want to pass every test, to get good and even better grades? I do. Cell phones help us in class. All the educational apps help us with our math, English, writing and other subjects. You can use other smart phone's like androids or iPhones. Those are our reasons why.

  • Educational Purposes in School

I was listening to music during work time, and I was probably getting more work done with the music, and some teacher came and yelled at me for listening to it and that my other teacher said I could. They said I could listen to it on the computer when I would have looked up the same music! So it doesn't do anything different.

  • They might need them for Emergencies.

What if there is a school fire? Wouldn't you want your kid contacting you to make sure they are okay? What if they go on a walk, and never return. How would they be able to tell you where they are or where they went. What if they need to check in and they don't have a phone. There are a lot of reasons. That's why students NEED their phones on them at ALL times. Even in school, because you never know what may happen.

  • Because we can.

Kids want to use phones, of course we lesson in class but we would be more motivated and willing to learn more if we had a little free leeway. There's not a problem, they're just phones. People who disagree can get over it and realize that teenagers are stubborn and with a little wiggle room will pay attention and not be so stern to learn.

  • Yes, they can help.

The school wouldn't have to buy calculators because on many phones there is and app for a calculator. Also it would use less paper to take notes you could just use your phone or other device to take notes. I'm not saying to let student just use their phones whenever but when there teacher allows during class, in between classes and at lunch so that they would have less temptation during class to use them. Then if there was an emergency and no teachers were around they could call their parents and tell them. Also say there was an intruder in the school you could text your parents and tell them so when its all over with they could pick you up. But the cell phones should be on silent but if you get caught using your phone or if your phone goes off you should get two warnings and the third time to get your phone taken away for that block/period and get it back at the end of class. Then if it happens again you have to pick your phone up at the end of the day. Then if it happens yet again your parents have to come and pick it up at the end. Also if they are allowed at lunch the lunch room would be less noise and students would have to get up and walk around the lunch room to talk to their friend they can just text almost all at once.

  • They are safe and helpful help in class.

Cell phones should be allowed it will help students with math. They would also help the teacher. We must also keep up with this high tech world and get ready because the world is only getting more and more high tech. This also could help with your job in the future.

  • students are not bothering anyone by using their cellphone during lunch

Students should be able to use their cellphone because their parents or them pay their cellphone bill, not the teachers and staff at school. Also it's not like the students are in the middle of learning or anything, and lunch is mainly their only time to use their cellphone during school without getting in trouble.

  • Students should be allowed to use cell pones in school as a tool for learning.

We are preparing students for adult life; we should therefore allow them to use the tools that they will be using in their adult life. If we are preparing our students for life after school, we should allow them to use the tools they will be using when they get there. How many jobs can you think of right now where a smart phone is not beneficial? Mechanics order parts on their phone; engineers view blueprints; doctors calculate dosages; and grocers check inventory. The list is endless. By the time our students enter their professions, the need to utilize mobile technology will be even stronger. Not preparing our students for that world is negligent.

  • Yes. Students should use cell phones.

It is important because kids need to always keep in touch with their parents. It could be an emergency and the parents won't have time to come running to the school to get their child. It is crazy with the no cell phone policy at school. We need our rights to use our cell phones.

  • Cell phones are a great tool.

I believe that all students should have a cell phone in class. Why? You can use phones as calculators for math, dictionaries for English, and you can use different apps for different needs and subjects. Also, sometimes there are not enough computers in a class, so you can search up what you need on your phone.

  • Yes, students should be able to use phones during school.

Phones help students in emergencies. They allow students to take notes or photos of what the teacher is teaching in class. This is especially true if students have forgotten to bring their books. Teachers should have the power to confiscate phones if they feel they are causing too much of a distraction in class.

  • They are good for safety and education.

I believe that cell phones SHOULD be allowed in public schools for many reasons. They are good for education, safety, and much more.

    1. Cell Phones are good for education for many reasons. First you can use cell phones for research purposes. Although most schools have at least 1 computer in the classroom and a computer lab, sometimes this still isn't enough. It doesn't matter if your phone is expensive or not, almost every single phone has a calculator. You can always search on the Internet for the definition, or if you classroom or school doesn't have wi fi, you can text to 466-456 the word you need defined and Google will text you back the definition of that term.

  • Students should be able to bring their phones to school

I think that students should be able to bring their cell phones to school but they should not be able to use them in class. Cell phones would be a distraction and would impair their ability to listen to the teacher. But at the same time they can be an important contact tool for parents and their children.

  • I think they should be allowed!

I'm currently in a debate unit for English, and my topic is: Should cell phones be allowed in school? And my answer was yes. Cell phones could be used as 3 things: Personal learning device, emergencies, and organization. Students could use their phone as a calculator, to check their grades on the internet, and to look up words or meanings on the internet if their teacher allows them too. They also could download apps (if they have a smart phone) that allows them to get books, like for example, iBook for the iPhone. My second reasoning is emergencies. What if you forgot your lunch, text book, etc, or there's a fire, school shooting, etc? You would have to call 911. But what if you didn't have a phone? I wouldn't even want to imagine what would happen then. Also, students could use them for organization. There's reminders, calenders, and many other apps like that for your phone. I know a few people in my school who use a reminder app for their homework! Also, my schools use Google Apps for all of their sites, and each student gets their own Gmail account. For my school, we could download the Gmail app and then we could access all of out school's sites, all of my projects, and many other things. I know that students could cheat on tests, but you can always take away their phones during tests, or have their parents disable the internet on their phone, or something like that.
And that's why I think cell phones should be used in school.

  • Well of course.

When students are given a time and place to use their cell phones, it makes them not want to use them in classes. It also stimulates the brain. Sometimes kids get bored of reading textbooks, so then they can use the online textbook. It keeps them motivated and excited to learn. They think of it as a privilege.

  • Phones should be allowed.

What if someone was injured or something? How is the child going to call an emergency number?
One time this boy had just seen a stabbing and the victim is losing a lot of blood but the boy could not call any number because he did not have a phone.

  • I think that being able to use their cell phones in school is very helpful

Students bring them to school and use them in class anyways. I think it would be a smart idea for teachers to capitalize on this situation and use them in class for the better of learning. A lot of students are visual learners and using apps to help out on a lecture would help out so much.

  • Phones are important

Phones are important due to the reason that we need social life. I go to a school in China (don't get me wrong, I know English) and most of the schools I know allow cell phones due to the reason that the school doesn't want to pay 300 RMB - about 50 USD for students calling home. My school has 21 classes of 4 different grades and my school pays at least 300 RMB/month for phone bills. Schools want students to have a social life and this is the reason I think phones should be allowed in school.

  • Yes students should be allowed to have cell phones.

I am a mother of a 15 and an 8 year old. I attend college, so there are times when my children have to stay home alone. I need my phone but my college professor thinks differently. Anything can happen. I would not interrupt the class and would take the call in the hallway. We are adults so we do get important phone calls.

  • It can be valuable in assignments in the classroom

If students are allowed to have cellphones in the classroom they will have more sources of learning. They can use their phones for researching assignments on the internet or for making videos or taking pictures which can be done in video classes. From doing my own research I found that students grades were higher and they were engaged more in learning when cellphones were involved in learning.

They should have cell phones as they could find anything they need to study on internet and they can talk to friends if they got urgent work they could get practicals also and they persons who are interested in dance they can learn new dance steps and flips like stunt type be the expert advisers this will lead them to a great success and then they can complete their dreams....Gud luck

  • It may help us learn in a way we like

Papers are boring no fun not at all. When kids use their mobiles they enjoy what they are doing and may take learning more seriously . Yes they might go on other apps and games or facebook but there is always a consiquence with that such as getting your phone banned and that will be the students fault.

  • School Phones For Kids

In case of emergencies, kids should have cell phones to tell parents whats going on.
Walking home from school, they should have a cell phone at all times just in case anything bad happens. This is a subtle idea, it is necessary to always keep some communication device with you.

  • Yes, students can research

Students should be allowed to use cell phones in school as there are some advantages to it although it has its disadvantages. Students whose phones have 3G, they may search for information or even do their project if they do not own a computer or Internet. There are more reasons but these are some examples. Thank You.

  • Kids should be allowed to have phones in school so they can reach their parents in an emergency.

Kids should be allowed to have their phones in school because it gives them and their parents a sense of relief knowing that if something happens to them they can get in touch with someone. It also lets the parents know where their kids are, who they are going home with or where they are going.

  • Yes but not during class.

During class it should not make a noise and distract or interrupt the class, it's rude. Outside of class it should be allowed because, it won't interrupt anything really. And after school to contact parents about being picked up or an emergency (maybe need to call police quickly).

  • In case of an emergency

Children should bring cellphones to school because there might be an emergency. If someone trips over and cuts themselves really bad you could then call the hospital. You can also call your parents to let them know that you are in the hospital. Your parents can then go pick you up while you are still in the hospital.

  • Not during lessons.

Not in lessons but at break times and lunch times. They shouldn't be allowed in lessons or exams as it is now, but I see no harm in using them at break and lunch. Pupils should be responsible for their phones and what they have on them so they should look after their property like any other item at school.

  • SHOULD BE ALLOWED

I am a student at Tucker County High School and I think it's an excellent idea for students to use cell phones. Smartphones, nowadays, are very useful and can actually enhance the students' learning skills. In my opinion, if teachers use their phones, then so should students. It's a fair game. And most people say they are distracting? I believe they're useful, not a distraction.

  • Yes.

One of the beauties of the human race is our ability to progress. In seconds we can contact anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Cell phones might be the fastest advancing part of our world. The question being posed however is, are they appropriate in school? Quite frankly, school and class are different. In class they can be useful tools (like using a book in your phone) but other than that, they are completely inappropriate for class. However during lunch or passing periods,, there is no reason not to text your pal and hear about his/her day. The question you have to ask yourself is "Why not?" Why not contact your friends when appropriate? But during classes, absolutely not.

  • Student need to have cell phones in school for various reasons. Either to make plans, if there is and emergency, or to help with school.

Kids need to have cellular phones in the classroom so that they can learn easier. Study shows that if kids use their phones in the classroom they will be more focused and get better grades. Also parents could reach their kids for a change of plans, or an emergency. They could also listen to music on their phones. Music makes students focus a lot more and be more productive.

  • Cell phones in school

I agree that we should have cell phones in school because if you need to contact parents and the school phones are in use then what are you to do obviously you cant wait because if you need it now it will be to late. You can also use cell phones for checking information on Google, ask, or Bing. I mean we have laptops why cant we have cell phones if its because we would text people then we shouldn't have laptops because we can use laptops for that to like on Google email you can compose a message. And this is why i think we should have cell phones in school.

  • Students should be allowed to use cell phones.

Cell phones provide an excellent opportunity for learning. Obviously there should be rules on how the students can use these cellular devices. (As a student at a school that allows the use of cell phones, I know being allowed to use my smart phone rather than having to wait for the extremely slow school computers has been very helpful.) We use electronics constantly to enhance our learning, view teacher's power-points, ect.

  • Yes they should

They should because it helps in various ways such as calculator, dictionary, research and also prepare instant projects so as to mark them well. A cell phone can protect you. In case you are facing any kind of danger, you can inform your parents and they can help you.

  • Phones are necessary for calling parents.

I think students should be able to text during class, because if they got hurt and wanted to go home, they could call their moms to come pick them up. Also, some schools have uniforms, so if you forget to bring it, you can call your mom and tell her to bring your clothes.

  • Yes, phones are faster.

A cell phone would allow a student to look up information faster than them looking it up in a book. No one uses books now a days due to the increase in technology. A huge percent of the country have cell phones anyways. So why not allow us to use them?

  • students work better with smartphones

Studies have shown that when students are relaxed they do better on tests and quizzes. Also they could take voice notes of the lesson to study them later. People might think that they would cheat or play games the school could get signal jammers installed in the walls to block texts and calls inside the classroom.

  • Yes we should.

Yes, we should because what if you have to stay after school? How would your parents know not to worry? Yes, you could do it with the school phone but your parents would want to call you to see if you´re done. If you usually walk home you should have a cell phone to call if you are in trouble or if you don’t want to walk home because of the weather. I know that if someone texts you it disturbs the class, so just turn it on vibration mode and not on the ringer.

  • Why Students Should be able to have cell phones in school or during School

Because what if someone got seriously Injured? They should be able to text or call their parents. Also, what if a friend wanted to come over? You should be able to do the same thing maybe if a friend wanted to come over and they had to have permission first. This is why I say yes.

  • For Many Reasons...

Students should be allowed cell phones in school for many reasons... Firstly, being a student, many fights are caused at lunch because people are bored. Sure cyber bulling may happen but the school board could track what they are doing and texting. And have each screen visible to anybody passing by. They could also block sights such as askfm.Com where majority of cyber bulling happens to people in my school. Secondly, with students being allowed electronics, it could be a learning tool. Have each student download an app that is paid for by the school that is on androids, blackberrys and iPhones where students can write papers on and submit them to the teacher. Also, students could do their research from their phone, laptop or tablet. If a family could not afford the phone, the school board could apply for a tablet (so they don`t have to pay monthly). Lastly, sure sometimes phones would be stolen but not as likely when the students use them from class to class. The school could also help to look for the stolen object but they could say they could not replace it. This would teach the students responsibility of keeping your belongings safe.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Of course they can

Kids should be allowed to use their phones. They can use them to search up stuff that way children who are to young to own phones can use computers instead which will also save a lot of energy. They do not need to use them during class just in lunch or other free time periods.

  • Distraction cure with phones

Some kids can get distracted super easy like me. Sometimes the super distracted may not distract themselves but other kids. I have found music to be my "distraction cure"
now in class you can have one earphone in and the out so if the teacher calls your name you can hear them.

It can help us with work. Some kids get more done if they have music to listen to, and that way we would not be yelling. We would be out of the teacher's way and out of his face. I think we should have phones. If we need to tell our parents something we don't have to go to the office, we can just text them

  • It's your choice whether to use a cell phone in school.

If kids want to take their phones to school they should be able to. Who knows when they will need it? If they had a project, if there was an emergency or if they needed a calculator they will have it. If they had a relative lost or family emergency how will they know? You should always be aware.

Students should be allowed to bring mobiles phones to school in case of emergencies. It is in our opinion that children should be allowed to bring mobile phones to school in case they get into a complicated situation. For example, they can get lost if they are walking from school to home, they can use the street directory from their iPhone and they can find their way back home.

  • Cell phones should be allowed.

Students may need to receive an emergency phone call from a parent, but if they don't know the number of the school they can't contact you. , So you would need your cell phone. I firmly believe this because studies show that 50% of all students die because of not using their cell phones

  • Cell phones are not a distraction if used appropriately, there are many ways to avoid cell phones from being a distraction

You can turn your volume off, turn mobile data off so you will not recieve notifications from social media. you can also turn your phone on "airplane mode" where you cannot recieve or send out text messages. So if cell phones are used appropriately for school, there should be no problem.

  • Benefit kids in school!!

First of all it can help kids keep important notes for tests instead of losing them in a messy binder! Also if you have a problem with texting, just ban texting during class sessions. I also agree that kids can take pictures of due dates for projects. Most phones have a sticky note app and you can just write it down (or text it down) before you forget. So I say YES KEEP THE PHONES!!

    1. Take notes on the notes app
    2. Take photos of the homework board with your camera
    3. Education app ex. Multiplication and Division app
    4. Watch videos for project/assignments on you tube
    5. Reminders to remind you what you have to do at school for the day
    6. You can use the calendar app to write when homework/assignments/projects are due at school

I have ADD and I have a school where cell phones are banned in most classes, but it just so happens that my worst subject has the best grades because she allows cell phones in class, so I think yes cell phones should definitely be allowed in classroom work time. Thank you.

  • I was a kid once, I know how it was.

I was a kid once, I know how it was. Wanting to ring someone after school for a lift; wanting to play a game during lunch when you've got no snout to smoke. It's not like they're going to be having long conversations on them during lesson time is it?

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • I am 13, and you might think that of course, a kid would say yes, but I actually have a reason.

The reason I said yes is because there are many times that me or my friends phones have rang during class. We usually get it taken away, have to read it to the class, or we just get yelled at. Now I do NOT think that a teacher has the right to take a persons phone away for more than one class period. 30% of the time our texts are embarrassing to have to read to the class. 70% of the time are from our parents or family, trying to tell us that there is an emergency. So I think that there should be a certain time, not during class, but a time that we can take out our phones, whether it is a text from our friend or an emergency.

  • Cell Phones Are A Good Thing!

I think that kids should have cell phones in school because if a student forgets their lunch, or homework they could call or text their parents. If they work better with music they can without disturbing the other kids. They could use the phone as a calculator, dictionary, 0r any other educational use they can think of. Those are just some of the reasons that students should have cell phones in school!

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Kids Should Be Allowed to Use Their Cell Phones in School.

They can use their cell phone is class as a calculator. They can use their cell phones for researching something that they might need in class. They can save money on computers in school. Cell phones are not all bad. Teachers say it is a distraction to most students but not all.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Cell phones prove useful in many situations.

Phones could help students in emergencies. It also allows students to take notes or photos of what the teacher is teaching in class if they forgot to bring their books. But teachers should have the power to confiscate hand phones if they feel it is causing to much of a distraction in class.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They're bad

Students need to get their act together in class and pay full attention to the teacher that is there. Wasting their time by using their phones distracts both the teachers and other students. These students are there for a reason and allowing phones in school would take away from their education.

  • No should not be allowed

It will make the child go to any nasty sites while lecture is on in the class. It would be doing more harm than good...A lot of distraction in the class not only for the ones who are carrying the mobile rather for all others as well as curiosity may make everyone see what is there on that.... I may be very conservative but I think for the kids there is a right time when they can handle such facilities independently only after a certain age when they attain the sense of judgement as to how to use the cell for their personal growth....

  • No I will not allowed cell phones in school. I agree!

I agree because it will be too distracting, there will be cheating, talking loud on the phone, playing games and NOT paying attention. Also you will be taking pictures and you will hear it say cheese and you will see the flash. Also you will be texting and not participating in class activities. Also if you are listening to music you will be dancing singing and you will hear it. So I would not have cell phones in school. So I say NO!

  • No, they should not be allowed.

I am 14 and I think that mobile phones should not be allowed. They are a distraction. I find it very hard to concentrate during class if I am constantly receiving texts. I find school difficult as it is, let alone having another piece of technology to worry about. Don't get me wrong, I love my phone, but just not during school - I go to be educated, not to spend more time on Twitter or Facebook.

  • Why we should not have cell phones in class.

We should not have cell phones in school because if they are going off like someone is calling them they will be distracting, the students could cheat on test, plus students wouldn't pay attention in class because they will be too distracted texting others and playing games on their cell phones.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • No, I don't believe students should use their cell phones.

Because the cell phone can distract them from learning. They could be on many things like going on Facebook, My Space, Twitter, and many other chat sites. The students can even be playing games, or watching something on YouTube. Allowing the kids to use their cell phones in the school can mess up their education, they wont be learning instead they would be doing something besides learning.

  • No, definitely not

Because when they are doing a test they could use a calculator when they are not suppose to so no I dont think they should be allowed. Also school is for education not free time to play on your phones. Your phones are supposed to be used in your free time. I think anyway

  • It is an interruption in education.

The number of mobile phones has dramatically increased. They can disturb teachers and students. For example, if you were working hard on a piece of work, and a person's phone rings, it disrupts the whole class. You may become side-tracked or the teacher may be interrupted during speaking to the class.

  • As a Teacher, grrrr.... cell phones!

I'm a teacher, and I'm so glad cell phones are banned at my school.
    1. Students might play video games in class.
    2. If a cell phones rings, it is distracting to everyone in class.
    3. Texting is super distracting.
    4. Cell phones enable students to cheat during tests, texting each other the answers.

  • I vote no on students bringing cellphones to school.

They could cheat. They get distracted. They distract others from their work. They could text in class and the teachers might see so they might get their phone takin away! It is not worth taking your phone to school if you are just going to text in class and get your phone takin away!

  • Cell phones distract students from their work.

I believe that cell phones should not be in use during learning time because children would not fully concentrate on their work. Children could go on facebook, and facebook is not helpful for their learning. Children will be distracted by phones' ringing or flashes from other children taking photos with their phones. Cell phones should not be allowed in school during learning time.

  • Students Should Not Be Able To Bring Phones To School

Students should not be allowed to bring phones to school because it is a distraction. It might go off during class when their taking a test and it could stop their concentration. Also, they could CHEAT. If they don't know the answer to something, they could use a calculator on the internet during a test or type the question in Google and Google would give them the answer. There are many more reasons but those are the top two. Students should not be allowed to have phones in school because it could be a distraction and because they could be cheating from it. That is why students shouldn't be allowed to have phones in school.

  • Teens do not even use their phones for educational purposes

If students are always text messaging in class and surfing the Internet there is no way that they use their phones educationally. Did you know that if you use cell phone while trying to do homework it reduces productivity by 40% and cause a 10 point IQ loss, if done long enough?

  • Phones take away from the learning.

Phones take away from the learning. Many students use their phones for non-educational reasons during class. Many students use them to text, play games, check Facebook, Google something ECT. This causes them to distract themselves from what is taught, coming back to haunt them when a test or quiz comes up. It would most likely lower their marks. Then the student gets angry at their poor marks and blames the teacher for not teaching right, or having the test too hard. Now the parents get mad and the teacher has to now deal with the parents.

  • No phones in school because they would be a HUGE distraction in school

Kids already are distracted by the simplest things in school- clocks, students, teachers, shoes, fingers, ANYTHING! So if you let students whip out the phone in school, that opens up hundreds of distractions right there. Kids being distracted causes failing grades, less participation, and many many other horrible things. Don't let it happen.

  • Children should not be allowed to use cell phones in school because it is distracting and a way to cheat.

If a cell phone rings during class it would not only distract you it would also distract your peers as well. You may even distract the whole grade. Not only is it distracting it is a way students can use to cheat. For an example, students can use a calculator on a maths test and Google translate on a language test and so on. So what do you think???

If students have a cell phone in school the students can use it for cheating. They can look up answers on a test. All they would have to do is go on ask.Com and ask the question. Also a cell phone is distracting. During class they can watch videos and play games they would never learn a lesson. They won't pay attention.

  • It effects education

It is unacceptable that pupils are able to take their phones to school. They don't listen to the teacher and become very cheeky. They use excuses like "I have to call/text my parents" and the teachers believe it but if they needed to contact their parents or their parents needed to contact them they should pass a message through the office or ask to speak to them.

The students will most likely want to get on their phones instead of pay attention to the lesson itself. That will lower test scores from the material that they didn't catch on to because of the distracting phones in an learning environment. This is extremely important for Americans to realize that our kids are the future of the world.

  • Cell phone are disruptive and take the student's attention away from the class.

When students use their cell phones in the classroom their attention is taken away from the class and drawn to the phone. When the student’s attention is not on the class, they are not learning. Not only this but students can also access the internet through their phones and can utilize this to cheat.

While there are some good reasons for students to have cell phone, such as for emergency calls or contact with their parent or guardian, the phone should be left at the teacher’s desk so that the attention of the students will be on the class. In the teacher’s protective care the cell phones will be turned off but still available if the need arises.

  • Should students be allowed to carry or use cell phones at school

Research has proven that frequent use of a mobile phone can put the owner at risk of long term health damage. Mobile phones have radiation in them which they send out which can destroy or damage cells.
Thus a student who uses a mobile phone regularly is at risk of health damage. With the increase in ownership of mobiles, there is increased usage and so the students are putting themselves at risk more and more of health damage.

  • Phones should not be allowed

Many kids are distracted from schoolwork when they have cell phones. This is because the kids will keep on receiving texts from their friends.. Also kids will use a phone's calculator to cheat on their tests. Lastly, a teacher will take your phone away if (s)he finds out that you are texting, cheating, playing, etc.

  • Distractions in the educational environment.

Have you ever set outside the classroom door of your child's class and seen what really goes on in the classroom without you being noticed. I have seen teacher leaving the classroom on a personal phone call on her cell phone device and leave the class unattended. Teachers telling students to put away their cell phone devices and pay attention. I get it, electronic devices have their benefits as far as an educational tool in the classroom, but there is a time and a place for that. When you get a chance go through you son/daughters cell phone you might be surprised on what you might find. Remember that you are still the parents and pay for the device and for the service. You have that right. If we allow our children to become dependent on learning from an electronic device then what is the purpose or use for teachers in the classroom to control order. Then there would not be a need for your child to go to school because as long as they have there electronic device the students would be as smart as long as there battery would last as long as you have electric to keep it charged. Would your child still have skills without the device ? Or would your child be able to do simple math without a calculator...? There would come a time that there would not be a need for teachers, but IT Tech to show students how to use there devices. I know that is what I do for a living. But know there are a lot of people out there that do not even know how to fill out a application for a job online. Much less go back to college and take any classes online. Because the lack of knowledge on how to operate a CPU, Laptop, or a cell phone device....We have to remember that electronic devices are just tools there are not a necessity of life.

  • It causes discrimination

Firstly, allowing students to carry hand phones to class gives pupils an unnecessary opportunity to compare their phones, which leads to discrimination of the poor students.

These students will form cliques and they are severely ostracizing the other pupils. IS THIS WHAT WE WANT? IS THIS WHAT THE SCHOOLS WANT? The answer is a resounding NO, this is something we definitely DO NOT want.

By doing this, we are encouraging them to compare and this will definitely lead to one of the 7 deadly sins, which is envy.

It gives them peer pressure by buying friend ship by buying phones to fit in and definitely it teaches wrong values.

  • They are a distraction

Cell Phones are just a distraction for students from getting the sufficient education they need. I know so many people that text and play games during lessons. The only time cell phones should be used is in an emergency, but teachers should have some communication in that case anyway. They should be gone.

    Posted by: Fusty
  • They did to pay attention

I would say yes but the only time they will be able to use their phone will be during lunch after school and free play. For an emergency they can call their parents or guardians but the cell phones will have to be in their lockers and cell phones did to be shut down. The teachers will have permission to go throw their lockers and see if their cell phones are off. If there not off they will be taken away and their parents or guardians will have to come and pick them up and pay $15.00 dollars. If they get taken away the second time their parents or guardians will paying $15.00 dollars and spend one day in school suspension for one day.

  • Bad report cards

My opinion is that if you are allowed to use your cellphones in class students would be texting listening to music, but will never pay attention to what the teacher is teaching. So when the students get bad grades they blame the teachers and say teacher don't know how to teach even if it there own fault.

It disturbs the students. It will not allow the students to concentrate fully on the class. Children mind will get diverted. They are diverted to play games and will get addict to it. As for me, my school is allowed to use the cellphone in school. AND most of the students use them in class times. Since there are 30~40 students, teachers can't look after them all. That means allowing the cellphone uses in school equals letting students not study. Well, that's what I think.

  • Too many cell phones for kids

Many kids these days have cell phones. You often see teenagers talking on their phones, or, just as often, texting. It has become a part of everyday life, and a part of our society. Many teenagers and pre-teens get cell phones as early as possible, sometimes younger than age 12. It is encouraged socially, especially among teenagers, to have a phone, and many teenagers get phones just because of peer pressure. Cell phones can be very useful, for communication between kids and parents (especially teenagers that can’t drive), and can be very important in emergencies.

But cell phones can also be used for less important reasons, such as excessive amounts of texting. One big issue concerning cell phones and teenagers is the use of cell phones in school. Many teenagers believe that cell phones should be allowed in school, during class.
But cell phones should not be allowed during school, because they would provide distractions for students and teachers, allow for cheating on tests, and for other social reasons. If a student’s cell phone rang during class, it would obviously distract him from the class and whatever the teacher is teaching. If this continued, it could prove detrimental to that student’s education. It could also be distracting to other students, for if someone was talking on their phone while the teacher was talking, it would be difficult for the students to focus on the teacher.

But what if two people answered there phone during class? Or three, or four? It would be quite distracting for those students, and for their classmates. Plus, it would certainly be distracting for the teacher-trying to talk over students who are talking when they are. One of the best ways to get in trouble during class is to talk when the teacher is talking, for it distracts the teacher, the student, and their classmates; if cell phone were allowed in school, they would increase the amount of time students are talking when they don’t need to, making the class more difficult to teach, take longer, and be less educational.
Cell phones could also provide a means of cheating on tests. Almost all cell phones have texting, and kids have become good at texting without getting caught. It would be easy for kids to text each other the answers to tests during testing sessions if everyone is allowed to use their phone during class. If teachers ask what students are doing, they can just say that they are texting their mom.

Now, some might say that kids are more honest than that, but they are wrong. One teacher had a story about a class he used to teach in. Some of the kids began to learn sign language, just for fun. The teacher thought it was good that they were doing something new and different-until he found out that they were using sign language to cheat on tests. If kids can find a way to cheat on tests, they will.

  • No need for a cell phone in school, kids!

Have you ever walked into one school and not seen a telephone? Well, I certainly have not! They are there for students to use in case of an emergency, as well as the staff. No students should be carrying cell phones in school. They also cause a major distraction. Cell phones should not be in use during school, but can be used after or before school for personal reasons. And must stay turned off for the remainder of the day.
Overall, NO cell phones should be able to work during school and students should not carry them around as well!

  • NO! The ideal use and the real use are not the same!

Sure, highschoolers CAN use them for the right reasons, but the majority don't. I just finished an argument about this. What teenagers can do and what teenager actually do are completely different. They text and listen to music and go on facebook, completely ignoring the teacher. I have seen this in my highschool. The kids would never even respect the teacher's lesson, and would not listen cause they were to busy texting and talking and showing each other pics and videos on their phones. This was my short debate. http://www.debate.org/debates/Should-schools-allow-students-to-use-their-electronics-at-school/1/

  • No students should not be allowed to use cell phones in school: No students should not be allowed to use cell phones in school:

⦁ Research has proven that frequent use of a mobile phone can put the owner at risk of long term health damage. Mobile phones have radiation in them which they send out which can destroy or damage cells. Thus a student who uses a mobile phone regularly is at risk of health damage. With the increase in ownership of mobiles, there is increased usage and so the students are putting themselves at risk more and more of health damage.
⦁ They impede collaboration, group work and equal opportunities. They instill individualism. Even when phones are used correctly in education, they instill individualism (ie. "I have access to a resource which my peers don't so I have an advantage over them and if I share my resource then I lose that advantage").

  • Phones should NOT be allowed in school

Phones are a huge distraction when it comes to school. I always see my friends taking pics and texting while the teacher is talking. That is very disrespectful. The kids wanna use calculators? Buy them! Why allow them to take their phones and/or ipods to school when Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, iMessage and all those other social apps are on there. Of course students will sneak into logging onto those apps during classes. Kids these days cannot have self-control. They need to be 100% focused on what they are doing. After all, they can get on their phones which they are so addicted to AFTER school and homework.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They can really distract you.

I say no for many reasons. The main thing is if you let students use their cell phones during school they will most likely text in class. If they're texting how are they going to pay attention to the lesson? Yeah, the students should be able to use cell phones during lunch so they can contact friends or family members, but other than that, no.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They are too distracting.

The bringing of phones to school will affect their academic and also their non-academic performances, because they would be distracted when they bring their phones and also the teachers would be distracted in teaching because some students will use their phones when their teacher is discussing something. That is disrespectful.

  • Cell phones need to be left at home, or turned off, because they are too much of a distraction.

Cell phones are a distraction, and I believe schools should not allow the use of cell phones in school, by students or staff. It is getting very weird with cell phones. You see status updates from school-aged children on Facebook, when they should be in class or are in class. With smartphones, they can look up information on the phone to cheat on tests. I just think they need to be turned off, so teachers can do their jobs.

    Posted by: PointlessElbert47
  • Students should not!

Students should not be allowed to use their mobile devices at school because it is known to be a problem for most people! Their setting a bad example for the little kids! Students could be texting or sending nasty pictures at school! Teenagers have a bad habit of texting during school hours!

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They will cheat on tests.

They can use a calculator by using the phone. They can use the dictionary on the phone. They can text for answers. Some may even call their parents for answers. All those smart reasons relate to my argument that students should not bring their phone to the school classroom during the day.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • It distracts students.

Children should not bring cell phones to school as it distracts students in their learning. If the students get distracted, they wouldn't be able to focus which will stop them from learning. For example, your cell phone can ring during a lesson and distract the other students in your class or if a game on your cell phone sends you a notification, your self phone will make a noise.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • They impede collaboration, group work and equal opportunities. They instill individualism.

It's not that I'm against the use of phones in class; as a teacher I give my students a certain amount of freedom, and although I know they almost always use their phones for non educational purposes, I can hardly expect them to concentrate 100% for a full two hours... So I give them a certain degree of fredom and they learn to use that freedom responsibly and with moderation.

So although I'm in favour of using cellphones in class, I'm writing in this column to add another reason AGAINST. All the previous posts talk of the distraction effect of phones. I would like to add that, even when phones are used correctly in education, they instill individualism (ie. "I have access to a resource which my peers don't so I have an advantage over them and if I share my resource then I lose that advantage") and they impede collaboration, group work and equal opportunities, values which I consider paramount in education, way above the specific contents or objectives of a course.

  • One would disagree

Phones are a great way and use in the modern society. Phones can call your parents, teachers and relatives from across the world. However, in most cases students have been using phones (particularly smart phones) to cheat in test. Consequently, phones can distract your learning and other peers of yours because when you use your phone during class you are distracted from what your teacher is lecturing and concentrating on what your doing on your phone.

The topic suggest that students should or should not be allowed to use phones at school, however it does not say that you cannot use your phone at home.

  • There ARE other phones in the school, for a reason.

I have not walked into one school, and seen no telephones. Those are for the staff to use, in case of an emergency. And if there is an emergency, kids do not need their own phones, they can use the school's nearest telephone. Trust me, there is always going to be one! My teacher always allows me to use the telephone in her classroom, in case I need to call my parents about picking me up after school, or something like that. Students do NOT need phones IN school. It is also, how everyone else has stated, distracting!

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Reality Says NO

In theory, the use of cell phone technology in the schools sounds great. However, the reality of their use in the schools is a much different thing. Kids are texting, checking social media sites, listening to music, etc. It is NOT being using it appropriately. My kids' phones are proof.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Kids need to be focused.

Kids will be playing games instead of learning. Kids will also cheat on tests. They will not focus on work. They will be cheating on work and not learn anything. In the future kids will rely on phones, calculators and other devices. In the halls kids will be talking and be late for class.

    Posted by: Anonymous
  • Students should not be allowed to use cell phones in school!

I definitely think that cell phones should not be allowed in school. I have a few reasons to justify why. First, students do not pay attention to teachers, and it makes other students lose their concentration. Second, cell phones causes negative behaviors. Lastly, students don't focus on learning, and it causes them to get bad grades.

  • Phones should not be allowed in schools

Forget passing handwritten notes underneath desks or inking your arm with essential math formulas before a killer test. If students today want to cheat, they have a more insidious tool at their disposal: cellphones. More than one third of teens with cellphones admit to having stored information on them to look at during a test or texting friends about answers, a new survey finds.
Some students say that the lack of person-to-person contact in new 21st-century methods of cheating makes it harder for them to feel as if they're doing something wrong. Others see texting during tests simply as helping one another, as opposed to looking at someone else's paper during an exam, which they consider cheating.
And cellphones can emmit radio active waves that might cause cancer.

  • Phones are to distracting

If students are allowed to use phones in school, they would be way to distracted in class. There phone could also be stolen or they can lose it (or damange it). I am a seventh grade student in a catholic school and our phones are not allowed. We used to have the access to use our phones, until students cheated on tests and got there phone access taken away. Thats another thing, cheating. Students can cheat on tests and practically ruin their lives because they wont know anything (they wont study) and if they get caught it will go on their permentant record and thry will never get a good job or get accepted in to a good college (or certian high schools.) Students can also look up inopropriate things on the internet or take inopropriate pictures. I highly belive that schools should not be allowed to use cellphones in school

  • I that this could be a good choice but is probably not a good idea

I am a student and I think that cell phones can be used for good tools on them. But it seem to come to my attention that people do not use them in the right ways. So if you are planning on doing this make sure that you know your students and that you are ready to face the reactions of what happens.

  • There are possible long-term health risks from using mobile phones.

Some research suggests that the radio waves from mobile phones may harm people's brains. Because children's brains are still developing, any possible damage to them is even more worrying than for adults. It is true there is no total scientific proof about this, but it is better to play safe than take risks – the precautionary principle. Until science can prove mobile phones are completely safe for young people to use, they should not be allowed to have them.

  • Mobile Phones Shouldn't be allowed in School

Well. Its a disruption to school, you go to school to learn not to talk to people outside school. Its interesting how much time is wasted on sending texts to people that you can just talk to irl after school, Phones can help though in sending texts if you forgot your bus or you forgot your lunch but, thats why you can just go the office. If anyone want to beg to differ just reply

Theses phones have a reason and this reason is to contact people, but not in class. This is becoming a big problem and they might be banned completely. If this gets too out of hand all school are just going to give up and if that happens the people that do want to learn won't get a chance.

  • Phones are just bad for everyone!

Have you ever been at school and your classmate's phone rang? Or have you taught a class and suddenly one of your pupil's phones buzzed from a text? I strongly believe that cell phones should not be allowed at school.
Firstly, it is really distracting. You have all your games on your phone as well as social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. As many of you may know, it is really tempting to just like a photo or play one round of a game and before you know it, you have been playing for an hour. Children do not concentrate in class and are not benefiting or learning from having that class. It is just a waste of time.

  • Cell phone use isn't academic, and you know it

A lot of the "Yes" votes are saying "We're using the phones for notes or to look up stuff!" No you're not. You're using it to text people. How do I know this? Because I see it every damn day I'm in class. I'm a 30 year old student in University and I'm just appalled at how these younger kids just can't turn their phone off for the period they're in class. Do we ALWAYS need to be connected? Turn off the phone. Put it away. Learn something.

  • Distracting: Students who multitask perform horribly on content based assignments and exams.

The argument that a phone is a resource is nonsense. The internet, in general, was supposed to change education for the better and it hasn't. Most of what is done on the internet is a total waste of time; and the other things, like online banking and email, have been done prior to the internet with banks and the post office. Very little productive novelty has occurred systemically in education because of the internet. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Myspace, and on and on are a total waste of academic time. The majority of student use their phones for social purposes and not academic. Sure, on occasion these social sites can provide the means for learning to occur; but, in general, they don't because they are not designed for that purpose. Also, cheating is much more accessible. Take a picture of an exam and post it on Instagram so that others can see it; or text answer to others. In short, cell phone use in school is a very bad idea.

The debate on whether kids should be allowed to use cell phones in school is an easy one. Although cell phones do have some great apps that will help in educating them and maybe further advancement in learning, there is also major distraction. A lot of kids already use phones in school to text and by making cell phones able to be used you are going to have many children distracted. Some say "Books are boring and they won't help me learn" well buddy let me tell you something. Books are the oldest source of history in the world and are a lot better at teaching than electronic devices that will keep kids distracted. The problem isn't that the books are "Boring" it is that kids want to be able to use electronics during school. It doesn't matter if the cell phones will help, most kids will just use them for other things such as texting, facebook, twitter, etc. A book is a good way to grasp someone's attention because you can only read the words in that book, you can't go read a different thing in that book like you can with a cell phone or ipod. The fact is that a lot of the people saying cell phones are good are kids who already use them in school or want an option to. Sure they can be used as a calculator, or for looking up definitions for words, but out of all the people who use cell phones in school already how many really use it for that purpose? Little to none. Electronic devices are to much of a distraction and should not be allowed in school without proper supervision that they are actually being used for good intentions, such as most are suggesting. Another bad reason is that they can use it to cheat or get answers without actually figuring it out on their own. In doing this they become reliant on the cell phone than their own knowledge, so what happens when your phone breaks and you don't know how to do something? Well it sucks to be you doesn't it. We are in such a electronic dependent world that books in a learning environment are very good for people. All I am trying to say is that they will be too much of a distraction than from learning the cold hard facts from a book, and our kids will become dependent on electronics than know how to do things themselves.

I think that cell phones should be allowed in school because it would allow kids to take notes without having to fumble around with a pencil and paper
Anonymous says2013-05-29T15:51:36.863
Should be allowed , education would be more exciting.
