Should students be required to spend a certain number of hours doing volunteer work?

  • Yes, I think students should be required to do a certain number of hours doing volunteer work.

I think that getting students to volunteer in the community is a good thing, I think it can show the students the fulfilling rewards you get out of helping your community and I think the community benefits from getting a pool of volunteers to do certain tasks that needed to be done.

  • They need to!!!

Its good enough that volunteering is teaching children responsibility which could make them a better student. Also, the best thing about volunteering is helping too. Nice to say that its really a good thing. People from high schools get encouraged to volunteer too. These are all of my reasons why people should volunteer. Have a awesome day! [:

  • Yes, students should be taught to look beyond themselves.

Teaching children early on that volunteerism is valuable and important is vital to making them better and more productive members of society. Children and teens are, by their very nature, very self centered. Teaching them to care about and do things for others is an important part of their development. Sadly, many won't unless forced, especially since many do not have a good example at home.

  • Volunteer coursework should be required.

Students should be required to complete a certain amount of volunteer hours each year for school credit. By emphasizing the importance of community involvement, students can see firsthand how they impact their surroundings and how their surroundings impact them. Volunteer work also dispels feelings of entitlement and promotes a more communal approach to life.

  • Volunteer work should be VOLUNTARY

Volunteer work is meant to be VOLUNTARY. Not forced. Voluntary. Maybe its connection to the word "volunteer" isn't too obvious for some people.

Volunteer work should be out of the goodness of the heart, to benefit other people and expecting nothing in return. Not to fulfill some requirement to graduate. It just ruins the whole point of it and stomps on its purpose.

  • Don't butcher the English Language

"Volunteering" is VOLUNTARY. If you want to argue that students should be required to perform community service I will listen to those arguments but calling this "volunteer work" is wrong. Respect English! Don't misuse words! Volunteering means it is voluntary or you are talking about community service not volunteering. OK

  • They can do other things

Some students, as I was, are so involved with school, work, and other activities that to have volunteer requirements would get in the way of something else. Time is money, and shaping an individual through extracurricular activities that require large time commitments can be just as worthwhile as any volunteering.

  • Students should not be required to spend a certain number of hours doing volunteer work.

Students should not be required to spend a certain number of hours doing volunteer work. Volunteer work should be for those that want to do it and not the ones that are forced to. We already give our students too much homework and forcing them to do anymore would be stupid.

  • Not the point of volunteering

Volunteer work is supposed to be something you VOLUNTEER for. It makes little sense to compelled someone to do work for free if they do not want to. Mandatory volunteer work is time outside of school that kids will have to take away from work, studies, extracurriculars, or just relaxing. It is unfair to force work onto people and give them nothing in return without their consent
